“...News from Verona!-How now, Balthasar!/ Dost thou not bring me letters from the friar?/ How doth my lady?...”
“...Her body sleeps in Capel’s monument,/ And her immortal part with angels lives” (V.i.13-14, 18-19).
In the play Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare in the 14th century, Balthasar, a servant, tells his master Romeo, that Romeo’s wife, Juliet is dead. This is because Friar Lawrence, who lives and works as a priest in Verona, has made a grave mistake. Friar Lawrence’s mistakes eventually lead to the death of Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet are children of two feuding families, therefore making them star-crossed lovers who take their own lives. Friar Lawrence is an anxious person and he is overly concerned about …show more content…
Paris is telling Friar Lawrence that he and Juliet’s wedding is on Thursday, and the friar starts to panic. “On Thursday, sir? The time is very short... You say you don’t know the lady’s mind./ Uneven is the course, I like it not” (IV.i.1, 4-5). The friar is bothered because he has already married Romeo and Juliet and it would be a sin for him to also marry Paris and Juliet. Furthermore, despair washed over Friar Lawrence when he told Romeo that he was banished from Verona This really upset Romeo because he was still alive, but he couldn’t see Juliet, so he would rather die. “It’s torture, not mercy! Heaven is here/ where Juliet lives.../ I’ll give thee armor to keep off that word;/ Adversity’s sweet milk, philosophy,/ To comfort thee, though thou art banished” ( III.iii.30-31, 55-57). This confirms that the friar coddles Romeo and Juliet and their relationship, because he was the one who secretly married them and he doesn’t want to get in trouble or be blamed. Because Friar Lawrence is concerned about Juliet having to marry Paris and Romeo being banished, These actions of the friar ultimately led to the suicides of Romeo and

...ROMEO & JULIET Prologue (ACT 1) As a prologue to the play, the Chorus enters. In a fourteen-line sonnet, the Chorus describes two noble households (called “houses”) in the city of Verona. The houses hold an “ancient grudge” (Prologue.2) against each other that remains a source of violent and bloody conflict. The Chorus states that from these two houses, two “star-crossed” (Prologue.6) lovers will appear. These lovers will mend the quarrel between their families by dying. The story of these two lovers, and of the terrible strife between their families, will be the topic of this play. ANALYSIS This opening speech by the Chorus serves as an introduction to Romeo and Juliet. We are provided with information about where the play takes place, and given some background information about its principal characters. The obvious function of the Prologue as introduction to the Verona of Romeo and Juliet can obscure its deeper, more important function. The Prologue does not merely set the scene of Romeo and Juliet, it tells the audience exactly what is going to happen in the play. The Prologue refers to an ill-fated couple with its use of the word “star-crossed,” which means, literally, against the stars. Stars were thought to control people’s destinies. But the Prologue itself creates this sense of fate by providing the audience with the knowledge that Romeo and Juliet will die even before the play has begun. The audience therefore watches the play with the expectation that it must...
