There are several functional areas of business, however, there are two areas that I am most interested in, they are Management and Leadership. The reason that I am interested in these areas is that throughout my military career I had to fill both of these roles. I enjoyed watching my troops grow professionally and personally as well as watching them get promoted ahead of their peers. I gained their trust and loyalty through good leadership, and I made sure they had the tools and knowledge they needed to succeed. There are many ways that the military and the business world are the same; in this paper I will discuss why management and leadership go hand-in-hand to make a business successful.
Management is defined as “the use of professional skills for identifying and achieving organizational objectives through the deployment of appropriate resources. Management involves identifying what needs to be done and organizing and supporting others to perform the necessary tasks” ("In BUSINESS: The Ultimate Resource," 2009).
Managers must have skills sets such as strategic planning, the ability to set and meet goals, manage resources, and get results. Managers must use strategic planning to set priorities and resources to ensure stakeholders and employees work toward a common objective or goal, and adjust to changing environments to get the desired results. Effective strategic planning will not only set the company for success but also will define what the company currently is and will also be in the future.
Managers also need to set short and long-term goals and ensure that these goals are defined clearly so that employees fully understand the goals and know what is expected of them. These goals should be realistic and should be used to motivate employees to work harder. It is also
