Fundamentals of Effective Communication in the Workplace
As a Social Worker effective communication is a vital part of our job. We communicate to receive information about a client, by listening, gaining trust, showing empathy, and giving feedback. We also communicate with others by relaying client information, setting boundaries, creating goals and drawing up written agreements.
When I was employed as a social worker, I remember receiving a call of neglect. This information was received from a close friend concerned about the welfare of a young boy. I gathered as much information regarding the child and the home from this person. I immediately conveyed this information to my supervisor and asked for assistance from a coworker to accompany me as I went to conduct the investigation.
When I entered the home I informed the parents of the complaint that I received, asked the parents a series of questions about what was going on in the home, listened to them, took detailed notes and informed the parents that I was here to help. I asked if I could look around the home and speak with the little boy separately. While my coworker spoke with the parents in order to gain additional information, I took the little boy in the next room and immediately knew everything was not alright. I asked him questions about his school, his friends and his family to gain his trust and friendship. As I told the little boy that everything was going to be alright, I dried his tears and assured him that I was here to help him.
After speaking with the child and his parents, I gave them my feedback, suggested some things they should do and provided them with information about the community resources in the area that would help them. To further support
