Authors Firoozeh Dumas and Mawi Asgedom tell the stories of their respective journeys as immigrant to America. Firoozeh uses description to describe her early years in America in Funny in Farsi while Asgedom uses personal reflection to explain what being an immigrant really meant in of Beetles and Angels. While both authors discuss valuable experiences, they use different strategies to convey their perspectives.
In Funny in Farsi, Dumas focuses on her early life using description to show exactly what people asked and told about Dumas. Specifically, she tells about the misconceptions and questions Americans asked about her and Iran. Dumas directly states her perspective when she tells how the Americans asked their questions. To support this point, Dumas tells her readers that “Americans were kind and unafraid to ask questions, and willing to listen.” (149) The second strategy Dumas uses is an anecdote. Dumas says “I never told them the truth. I figured that someday, somebody would.” (152) Dumas is telling us about how older kids who wants to know how to swear in her language, but she tricked them into saying “man kharam” …show more content…
Asgedom says “We carried a home, a sense of mutual responsibility wherever we went… my coworker with her as well: the simple community of human connection and duty.”(165) Asgedom is using personal reflection to teach you the lesson he wants you to learn: You must give back to your community and help others. The second strategy Asgedom uses is figurative language, Asgedom says “Today’s small act of kindness can become tomorrow's whirlwind of progress.” (165) Asgedom is trying to explain that one individual can greatly affect the world. The last strategy Asgedom uses is “ALL CAPS”. “I TAUGHT HIM TO WORK HARD AND TO RESPECT OTHERS. NOW LOOK WHERE THAT HAS TAKEN HIM.” (160) Asgedom uses “ALL CAPS” to show how proud would have been at his commencement

Funny In Farsi Cultural Analysis

...Funny in Farsi American Culture Response In the passage from Funny in Farsi, Firoozeh Dumas praises the benevolent nature of Americans towards immigrants. The Whittier Academy administration displayed compassion towards Dumas and her mother, despite their lack of knowledge surrounding American culture and the English language. The administration understandingly accommodates Dumas, and her mother’s needs as they, “had decided that it would be a good idea for [Dumas’s] mother to attend school with [Dumas] for a few weeks.” Through these actions, the school is presenting Dumas’s mother with a chance to learn about American culture, and the English Language. However, Dumas’s mother also acts as a safety net for Dumas. Considering Dumas...

Analysis Of Funny In Farsi By Firoozeh Dumas

...Firoozeh Dumas said, “We remember the kindness more than ever, knowing that our relatives who immigrated to this country after the Iranian Revolution did not encounter the same America.” in her book Funny in Farsi. This shows how America changed and how the relationships between natural born citizens and immigrants had also changed over the years. After the revolution, some of Dumas's relatives visited America and they did not believe Americans were very kind. When Dumas and her family visited California, they were treated with kindness and generosity from most people. The Americans Dumas and her family met were continually asking questions about their homeland. After being in America for a while her family soon realized that America's image...

You have to get up pretty early to call the States, if you want your privacy and you want to catch anybody awake at home; at home it’ll be sometime the night before. The desert is cool in the mornings too, or cooler, so that you’ll see the occasional soldier getting his PT in before it gets too hot, but he’s usually far enough away that you don’t have to whisper. I would watch the big black beetles fighting with each other in the dirt (they’re way bigger here than they are at home) while waiting for the call to go through. It always...

Academic Writing

...Mathematical Writing by Donald E. Knuth, Tracy Larrabee, and Paul M. Roberts This report is based on a course of the same name given at Stanford University during autumn quarter, 1987. Here’s the catalog description: CS 209. Mathematical Writing—Issues of technical writing and the effective presentation of mathematics and computer science. Preparation of theses, papers, books, and “literate” computer programs. A term paper on a topic of your choice; this paper may be used for credit in another course. The first three lectures were a “minicourse” that summarized the basics. About two hundred people attended those three sessions, which were devoted primarily to a discussion of the points in §1 of this report. An exercise (§2) and a suggested solution (§3) were also part of the minicourse. The remaining 28 lectures covered these and other issues in depth. We saw many examples of “before” and “after” from manuscripts in progress. We learned how to avoid excessive subscripts and superscripts. We discussed the documentation of algorithms, computer programs, and user manuals. We considered the process of refereeing and editing. We studied how to make effective diagrams and tables, and how to find appropriate quotations to spice up a text. Some of the material duplicated some of what would be discussed in writing classes offered by the English department, but the vast majority of the lectures were devoted to issues that are specific to mathematics and/or computer science. Guest lectures by...

Brand carries an assurance about the characteristics that make the product or service unique. A strong brand is a means of making people aware of what the company represents and what its offerings are.To a consumer, brand means and signifies: * Source of product * Delegating responsibility to the manufacturer of product * Lower risk * Less search cost * Quality symbol * Deal or pact with the product manufacturer * Symbolic device | | Brands simplify consumers purchase decision. Why does Lewis Carroll introduce us to such oddities as a blue caterpillar who smokes a hookah, a cat whose grin remains after its head has faded away, and a White Queen who lives backward and remembers forward?
