Chapter 3 Case Assignment 1. What differences exist within the firm that make the link between decentralization and efficiency less clear?
Decentralization is the cycle of dispersing or reconfiguring powers, functions people or things away from a central location or authority. While centralization, especially in the governmental landscape, is widely practiced and then studied, there is no similar understanding or definition of decentralization. The meaning of decentralization may vary in part because of the different ways it is put into action. There are several different types of concepts of decentralization have been applied to science and also to group dynamics in private organizations and businesses, political science, public administration and allowed along with technology and economics. Efficiency on the other had is an accomplishment of or will or God given talent to accomplish a job with a minimum effort and also of your time. Hayek is suggesting that markets are far better than you going out and central planning something (Brickley, 2015).I mean when you really look into it firms don’t have to exist Market transactions can easily carry out all exchange and production. You could always just build a computer yourself and buy all the parts and put it together or you could let the firms who make most computers do it for you themselves (Brickley, 2015). Resources are always allocated by both the firms and markets. You have to deal with contracting costs first of all then you have to deal with information and searching costs. And this is along with bargaining and decision costs along with enforcement and policy

Sabrmetrics

...Sabrmetrics Sabrmetrics Bill Stewart English Composition – ENG115 April 14, 2010 It has been said many times over that numbers do not lie but they also do not tell the entire story. Baseball is a game that has always been based in numbers and statistics. Now current baseball people, historians, authors, general managers use a new math termed "sabrmetrics" to determine the worth of a player, monetarily and statistically. No longer are statistics viewed as simple as numbers on the back of a bubble gum card. These mathematical equations are being used in business for general purposes, as well as human resources purposes and is now taught in collegiate universities. (Costa 2001) Sabrmetrics is a new way to look at people, players, statistics and to try to predict the futures. The name is taken from the combination of the acronym SABR (Society of American Baseball Research) and "metrics" meaning "measurement". (Albert 1994) Most business leaders are using 20th century metrics to create 21st century success. Business leaders were taught to "manage what we can measure" and, generally, what's most easily measurable are the more tangible aspects of life. In business, this translates to metrics like profitability and cash flow. Like baseball, businesses rely on numbers. (Bradbury 2007) Sabrmetrics can help a company in developing the right performance measures and monitoring tools for different scenarios and then allocate resources optimally to bolster...

Explaining the Significance of Walk-Up Music at Minor League Baseball Games

...Abstract This research explores the challenge of rating fan satisfaction based on the affects of walk up music used during triple-A minor league baseball games. Minor league baseball has always been associated with family entertainment, and game enhancements, such as walk-up music for players, have been utilized to increase overall fan satisfaction. Walk-up music is a short clip of music that is played as a player approaches the batter’s box or the pitcher’s mound. 30 triple-A minor league teams were contacted and were questioned about their policies regarding their use of walk-up music during games. Using qualitative collection methods, this research primarily focuses on the reasoning behind front office decisions to allow players to select their own walk-up music that will utilized during home games. Information gained through a survey that was conducted during the interviews of 30 triple-A minor league baseball teams will add useful insight to future investigations that are focused on the affects of walk-up music at the minor league baseball level as well other levels of competition. Though trying to rule out extraneous variables that may affect fan satisfaction will be difficult, the investigators believe that the information gained will be beneficial to future researchers, and will hopefully be a foundation to more extensive research on the affects of music in correlation to fan satisfaction. Introduction One of the most important advances in consumer research is...

...mention how baseball has changed my life. The sport has been more to me than just winning and losing, it has changed the person I am and it has shaped me for the future and has taught me many life lessons. Baseball has been a part of my life since I was very little and I have always loved playing the game. One of the ways that baseball has shaped me into the person I am today is by giving me the determination to strive to be better. Steroid Era

...Baseball’s so called “Steroid Era,” it was necessary for congress to step in and take control of the situation. Before congress did their investigation, Major League Baseball did not have strict enough rules to punish players who tested positive with any kind of steroid. Also before congress took control of the situation, there was a variety of drugs that players could use during that time that Major League Baseball had not banned or were not considered a “performance enhancing drug”. Even though the so called “Steroid Era” brought fans back to the game of baseball after the lockout in 1994, it not only damaged the reputation of baseball but it also damaged the purity of the sport. Not only did it affect baseball’s reputation and purity of the game, it also affected the fans who dreamt of playing in Major League Baseball. Now we will focus the main reasons why congress took control of the steroid issue that surrounded Major League Baseball. First, Major League Baseball along with Congress noticed the issue of steroids due to Jose Canseco, an ex-major leaguer, who came clean about the steroid issue in his book titled Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant ’Roids, Smash Hits, and How Baseball Got Big. In this book, Canseco explained how he taught a variety of players how to inject steroids and how it would benefit them in the future. Holling's Themes In 'The Wednesday Wars'

...Q A theme in the Wednesday Wars is it's hard to please two people/groups/ideas at the same time, which is shown when Holling decides whether or not to forgive Meryl Lee, when Holling is deciding what he should be when he grows up and when Danny gives his signed baseball back to Mickey Mantle. Sports Fan Demographics

...As of 2013, Danielle Eby organized the sports demographics in her article, “2013 Sports Fan Demographics”, Major League Baseball has the second oldest crowd associated with it, right behind the Professional Golfers Association. 50 percent of baseball fans are 55 or older, only about 24 percent are under the age of 34. Which is a much lower percentage than the National Hockey League, with 37 percent of their fans being less than 34 years old. Major League Soccer has almost double the amount of fan viewers under 34, with 40 percent of the demographic being fans of the MLS. The National Football League is one sport that was actually surprising, anticipating that it would have a majority of its fans being under the age of 34, it actually only has 29 percent of the population identifying as viewers, which is still 5 percent more than Major League Baseball. Finally, the sport with the most viewers under the age of 34 is the National Basketball Association. The NBA has about 45 percent of its fans below the age of 34 (Eby). Tommy John Surgery

...What is Tommy John Surgery? Ulnar Collateral Ligament (UCL) Reconstruction, better known as Tommy John Surgery, is a procedure performed on the ligament that connects the bone of the upper arm, the humerus, to a bone in the forearm, the ulna. The UCL is a critical ligament in the elbow, and allows athletes, particularly baseball players, to throw a baseball at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour (MPH). A baseball player named Tommy John, a pitcher who played from 1963 to 1989, was the first person to ever have UCL reconstruction surgery. Due to the fact that John was the first player to be operated on, the surgery bears his namesake. Who was Tommy John? Tommy John was a professional baseball player that pitched for 7 different teams during his 26-year career. John injured his left pitching elbow during a game on July 17, 1974. He threw a pitch, as he had done many times before, and felt a sharp pain in his elbow upon releasing the ball. John was removed from the game, and was evaluated by the Los Angeles Dodgers team doctor, Dr. Frank Jobe. Jobe informed Tommy John that if he did not have surgery, his career would be over. The surgery had never yet been performed before Tommy John was injured. After months of evaluation and deliberation, John agreed to the surgery. On September 25, 1974, Tommy John became the first man to receive the experimental surgery. How is the surgery performed? Dr. Jobe decided to take a tendon from somewhere else in the body, ideally the...
