G is the letter C with an L-shaped end stop. It’s the shape of a device welded onto many bridges to keep the girders from falling and breaking into pieces of concrete and twisted steel. Something shook inside my heart when I saw the handless vet. He crossed the stumps of his arms and cried, “Help me! I’m a vet.” He shivered as the clerks ushered him out of Starbucks on that December night. Then, a man wearing an Airborne cap led him back into the store. He bought the vet coffee and a sandwich. He gave him an old sweat-shirt.

As the man in the hat stood guard, a woman approached them. She held her pumpkin latte topped with whipped cream and a drizzle of caramel. “It’s hopeless,” she told the kind man. She’s worked as a social worker in east

Personal Narrative: G-3 Commobilization In Sacramento

...I work for G-3 mobilization in Sacramento and have been for a few years now. I utilize my personal values on a day-to-day basis because of the personnel I work with, and the work environment at our California Army National Guard (CA-ARNG) State Headquarters office. My personal values include many different ones and they include honesty, integrity, commitment, caring, and many others. When a unit is sourced to mobilize within the CA-ARNG, we receive their Notification of Sourcing (NOS) documents via Secret Internet Protocol Router Network (SIPR), and we begin working with the unit from that day forward, until they leave for the mobilization site. This is when my personal values come into play for a particular unit. I begin working with...

How Health Tv Shows Affect People's Health Attitude

...Journal of Health Communication, 13:667–680, 2008 Copyright # Taylor & Francis Group, LLC ISSN: 1081-0730 print/1087-0415 online DOI: 10.1080/10810730802412248 Interrupting a Narrative Transportation Experience: Program Placement Effects on Responses to Antismoking Advertising SARAH DURKIN AND MELANIE WAKEFIELD Centre for Behavioural Research in Cancer, The Cancer Council Victoria, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia It is thought that ‘‘transportation’’—absorption into the narrative flow of a story— may play a role in influencing resistance to persuasion. We hypothesized that advertising that disrupts the experience of narrative transportation may be adversely appraised by audiences. This study aimed to explore the influence of two types of television programs: narratives (dramas, comedies, and soap operas) versus nonnarratives (light entertainment, sports, documentaries, and news), on smokers’ reactions to antismoking advertisements. In preexposure interviews, daily smokers (n ¼ 779) were asked to watch a particular television program they usually watched. Postexposure interviews were conducted within 3 days of exposure. Results indicated that placing an antismoking ad within a program in which the viewer is focused on the narrative flow of a story may lead to reduced immediate cognitive and emotional impact of the ad and reduced intentions to quit, especially among those for whom the ad is most relevant, such as those preparing to quit smoking. Placing antismoking advertising...

Consumer Narrative

...Consumer narratives can be found and obtained from social media, online sources and traditional news. Some examples of on line sources are Amazon, Yelp and blogs. Surveys are another mean of collecting consumer consumption information, by asking customers to elaborate on their personal experience with a product. These consumer narratives collect data provided by a consumer and most channels of collecting data provide personal unsolicited opinions. By writing a narrative a consumer is expressing the phenomenal activity of consuming a product. The consumer relates all of the products characteristics to some sort of meaning that affect their life (Holt, 1995). Research believes that pre-defined information of a product has significant affect on the view of the product further affecting the purchasing decisions of a consumer (Gräbner, Zanker, Fliedl, Fuchs, 2012). Managers can walk away with key information on their product and services. They can create a relationship and connection with the consumer by communicating through advertising and providing services which provide positive relations with the costumer. Real emotions and experiences are offered by a consumer based on the emotions triggered by the consumption of a particular product or service (Grayson, 1997). Consumer narratives tend to bias certain marketing experiences. The logical perspective of the product, advertising or service received affects the emotional outcome of the consumer (Holt, 2012). Management can...

...Rhetorical Modes 1. NARRATION L E A R N I N G O B J E C T I V E S 10 1. Identify the purpose and structure of narrative writing. 2. Recognize how to write a narrative essay. Rhetorical modes simply mean the ways in which we can effectively communicate through language. This chapter covers nine common rhetorical modes. As you read about these nine modes, keep in mind that the rhetorical mode a writer chooses depends on his or her purpose for writing. Sometimes writers incorporate a variety of modes in one essay. In covering the nine rhetorical modes, this chapter also emphasizes these as a set of tools that will allow you greater flexibility and effectiveness in communicating with your audience and expressing your ideas. rhetorical modes The ways in which we effectively communicate through language. 1.1 The Purpose of Narrative Writing Narration means the art of storytelling, and the purpose of narrative writing is to tell stories. Any time you tell a story to a friend or family member about an event or incident in your day, you engage in a form of narration. In addition, a narrative can be factual or fictional. A factual story is one that is based on, and tries to be faithful to, actual events as they unfolded in real life. A fictional story is a made-up, or imagined, story; the writer of a fictional story can create characters and events as he or she sees fit. However, the big distinction between factual and fictional narratives is based on a writer’s purpose. The writers...

Family Counseling Approach: Narrative Counseling

...Through narrative therapy a counselor can help clients gain access to preferred story lines about their lives and identities taking the place of previous negative and self-defeating narratives that destroy the self. Presented in this paper, is an overview of the Narrative therapy and the Social Construction Model and several facets of this approach including poststrucuralism, deconstructionism, self-narratives, cultural narratives, therapeutic conversations, ceremonies, letters and leagues. A personal integration of faith in this family counseling approach is presented and discussed also in this paper. NARUMI AMADOR’S FAMILY CONSELING APPROACH Introduction Narrative therapy is found under the Social Construction Model. Using the Narrative approach, the therapist will not be the central figure in the therapeutic process, instead he will be influential to the client, helping him/her internalize and create new stories within themselves to draw new and healthier assumptions about who they are. This process enables clients to distract from focusing on the negative narratives which defined their past, redefining their lives into future positive stories. Narrative therapists define the problem as the problem instead of defining the client as the problem. The therapy process begins redefining the problem, externalizing it and getting it out in the open. The narrative therapist uses the questioning technique and creates alternative narratives to connect...

Research Spotlight on Peer Tutoring

...opportunity to understand better the material being studied. What does the research say about peer tutoring? In reviews of peer tutoring programs, researchers found: * When students participated in the role of reading tutor, improvements in reading achievement occurred * When tutors were explicitly trained in the tutoring process, they were far more effective and the students they were tutoring experienced significant gains in achievement * Most of the students benefited from peer tutoring in some way, but same-age tutors were as effective as cross-age tutors (Burnish, Fuchs & Fuchs, 2005; Topping, 2008)  Some benefits of peer tutoring for students include higher academic achievement, improved relationships with peers, improved personal and social development as well as increased motivation. In turn, the teacher benefits from this model of instruction by an increased opportunity to individualize instruction, increased facilitation of inclusion/mainstreaming, and opportunities to reduce inappropriate behaviors (Topping, 2008). There is an old saying: “To teach is to learn twice.”  Peer tutoring is a beneficial way for students...

...10 Qualitative Research Methods in Psychology Deborah Biggerstaff Warwick Medical School University of Warwick, Coventry UK 1. Introduction In the scientific community, and particularly in psychology and health, there has been an active and ongoing debate on the relative merits of adopting either quantitative or qualitative methods, especially when researching into human behaviour (Bowling, 2009; Oakley, 2000; Smith, 1995a, 1995b; Smith, 1998). In part, this debate formed a component of the development in the 1970s of our thinking about science. Andrew Pickering has described this movement as the “sociology of scientific knowledge” (SSK), where our scientific understanding, developing scientific ‘products’ and ‘know-how’, became identified as forming components in a wider engagement with society’s environmental and social context (Pickering, 1992, pp. 1). Since that time, the debate has continued so that today there is an increasing acceptance of the use of qualitative methods in the social sciences (Denzin & Lincoln, 2000; Morse, 1994; Punch, 2011; Robson, 2011) and health sciences (Bowling, 2009; Greenhalgh & Hurwitz, 1998; Murphy & Dingwall, 1998). The utility of qualitative methods has also been recognised in psychology. As Nollaig Frost (2011) observes, authors such as Carla Willig and Wendy Stainton Rogers consider qualitative psychology is much more accepted today and that it has moved from “the margins to the mainstream in psychology in the UK.” (Willig & Stainton...

Fiction vs. Informational Texts Which Will Kindergartners Choose?

...new. Informational text can be intimidating to adults let alone small children so it is understandable that some teachers may be intimidated introducing non-fiction to their early learners. There is an assumption that children will understand and make sense of a story that is fiction before they will be able to comprehend text that is a nont-fiction text (Bortnem). Some teachers may feel the text is too complicated, the vocabulary is too topic specific, there is not enough age appropriate material and many may such as storybooks, fairytales, etc. The author like many teachers was convinced that kindergartners preferred fiction, even though much of the research cited children's preferences for the content of informational books over narrative text. The author decides to investigate the children's book preferences through a study to determine if her perception that they preferred fiction was accurate. The core of the article centers on her study that was done among a class of kindergarteners.  The study was done to determine whether kindergarten students would choose fiction or informational texts more often. The study was done over a period of 19 weeks.  The study concluded that the kindergarteners would pick informational texts just as often, or even more often, than fiction books.  The teacher found that students liked to learn about things they found interesting.  The children chose nonfiction or...

Coping Skills in Aa Urban Youth

...This document is for reference & educational purposes only. Reproduction or/and copying are not authorized. Any anti-plagiarism software will flag this document or its sections as unoriginal. Coping and Resiliency Skills in African American Urban Youths Introduction Growing up with a limited understanding of how to regulate emotions and cope in the face of ubiquitous urban blight, severe socio-economic hardship, and systemic racism is difficult for many urban youths. Resiliency is a term that is frequently associated with urban youths, especially if we consider the fact that according to the U.S. Census data in today’s America approximately one third of this population group lives in urban areas (Census, 2000). Given a steady increase in the numbers of low-income children living in urban areas, efforts to understand this particular phenomenon are critical. In this context, it is important not only to examine the negative (e.g.: drug abuse, violence, etc.) but also the positive self-regulatory skills (e.g.: athletics, education, creativity, dance, poetry, etc.), which urban youths employ as coping mechanisms. Another concomitant question that needs to be explored is how urban youth exercise positive self-regulatory skills under different circumstances and in specific contexts. This study specifically examined the phenomenon of coping and resiliency skills in African American urban youths growing up in the developmental contexts of various environmental stressors...
