GED PROGRAMS IN HIGH SCHOOLS

Imagine you have a child in high school. Your child is 16 years old, good student, no problems, and good grades. Then one day your child comes home and says they want to drop out and get a GED. This is an option for your child because today's high schools have a GED program in the school. The GED program should be taken out of high schools and back to the original intent as an Adult Education. The intent of the GED was for WWII veterans to become eligible for post secondary education without going back to high school. Then in 1946 the program was opened up to civilians that had not graduated from high school (Caputo, 2005).

General Education Diploma programs should not be in high schools. The problem is with this program available to our children so easy. The average student and take the all of the GED tests in seven hours and 5 minutes (Rachal, Bingham 2004). After the test is complete it normally takes approximately four to six weeks to receive their scores(U. S. Department of Education). This program causes problems because good students to in essence drop out of high school, if for no other reason than to be done with school. Another problem is that allowing 16 to 17 year olds to take the GED test possibly limiting the job advancement and income to support their families in the future. Statistically people with a high school diploma earn $3000 more per month than those with a GED(Caputo). This also affects the military, military manpower studies show that people with a GED have a higher attrition rate than those with a high school diploma(Caputo). Another problem is the funding for Adult education going to youth education. Due to the overwhelmingly high 40% of GED recipients being teenagers, of which 14% are 16 to 17 years old(Rachal, Bingham 2004). The GED recipient, which is said to be equal to a high school…...

...will help me through the difficult trials of life that I will face in the years to come. Lincoln’s Challenge was a place for “troubled” teens to obtain a GED and get discipline. It was a military-based school in Rantoul, Illinois. Young adults from the ages of sixteen to eighteen would come there, voluntarily, to change their mischievous behavior. Last year I dropped out of MacArthur High School and enrolled in the academy. I was a junior when I left the high school, and I was truly scared out of my wits. What I had heard about Lincoln’s Challenge Academy, or LCA, were not too pleasant. I knew my past wasn’t the best, but from what I had heard from a few friends the other teens that were going to attend were going to be much worse. When I arrived at LCA in January, I was absolutely terrified. I didn’t want to leave the comfort of my home, parents, friends, or especially my bed! What made matters worse was that I would have to gone for six months without my phone! However, the promise of two three-day breaks in March and April and family visits every Sunday made the knot in my stomach shrink a little bit. When classes started a few weeks into the program, I realized that I could handle the stress. I was doing really well on all of my GED tests and my teacher made learning easy and, dare I say it, even fun! We took one GED test every month instead of taking them all in a matter of hours. This result is found at some levels of the prison system educational program, but is not equivocal across the differing facilities. One such program has theorized that the obtainment of a General Equivalent diploma (GED) or high school diploma would create a significant decrease in the number of repeat offenders. The researchers looked at many programs and found that approximately 30% of prison educated offenders would recidivate. However, that is a much lower number than the national average which states that of the 95% of newly released uneducated offenders, 67% would reoffend. This shows a decrease in recidivism of 50%. The majority of the studies showed equivalent results in relation to obtaining a GED or high school education and recidivism, because increased education builds better self-esteem, happiness, and psychological and societal adjustment (Zgoba, Haugebrook, & Jenkins, 2008).
