Team Building Worksheet

Complete the Team Building Worksheet by answering the following questions in 200 to 300 words each.

1. Describe team members’ results on the Discovery Wheel and develop your multiple intelligences exercises. What similarities and differences exist within the team?

A similarity Team Delta shares would definitely be that we are each use to using our critical thinking skills, managing time and have been exposed to a very diverse group just by serving in the military. Most of us scored about a three or four in each category of the discovery wheel. This makes sense considering the fact that it has been years since any of us have gone to school. Our note taking and reading and comprehension skills will be put to the test while we transition to college life. Our differences have to do with what the ultimate score in these areas were. Some were a little stronger and weaker in specific fields. By doing the discovery wheel I found that my two weakest areas are test taking and memory. My two strongest are health and diversity. Money was a very strong one also because the military is taking care of me while I go to school. Some of my other strong traits are communicating and diversity.

2. What are the advantages of having diversity on a team? What challenges might the team face because of diversity? Diversity will enhance our learning ability as each of our cultures has taught us different learning concepts, discipline, and contributing skills. What we are trying to say is that where we come from, we each picked up learning habits which when brought together, will help us to achieve our goals. These goals are different to each and every one of us. They can be anything from highest GPA, completing this course, or just simply personal satisfaction. Because we all come from different backgrounds, it is also each of our cultures that might or might not hinder our ability to understand each other. The only way for us to come to any agreement as a team is to come together and focus our efforts towards one unanimous decision to finish this course with the highest grades possible. When several individual minds come together, they can learn from each other’s past and present experiences. Each one of us will be stronger in one aspect then another. While one is good at studying and writing another may be good at note taking and memory. One teammate will be more experienced in communicating than reading and comprehending. It will be good for us to realize our individual strengths and weaknesses so that we can help each other improve in all areas of study 3. How might factors such as diversity, attitude, learning, and work styles affect team building? Diversity can affect team building as we all come from different cultures. One culture might not put the same value on education as another. This same culture might put more value on a career, no matter how you achieve over a two or four year degree. Attitude can detract from team building because we all have LIFE to live. One day, one team member might be experiencing difficulties in his or her family lives. There might be nothing the rest of the team might do or even worse might not want to do. All our attitudes must be adjusted to work better as a team to achieve success. Each of us has different work styles. One team member’s work style might be to, for lack of a better term say, “GET ’ER DONE”. Another team member might be a habitual procrastinator. How does one help the other? This is where the team concept MUST work. If we cannot do this, ultimately, the team fails. As one of our classmates mentioned in week one, “FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION”

4. What is the benefit to team collaboration of understanding your ethical perspective?

As a team we must be able to say to one another that we are all adults here and we need to express our opinions without fear of offending anyone individual’s morals and ethics. When we work as a team, we must have the composure to correct ourselves inside our circle so that we can positively portray our team work as a cohesive unit. To best analyze this, we can think of ourselves as the most expensive wristwatch for anyone to wear. Each team member is one ticking piece of this expensive watch. If just one of us fails in our function, then this watch becomes useless. Another example of this is to think of ourselves as a brand new broom. If you pick a single bristle from this broom, that single bristle will not clean but the path it makes. As a complete broom, we clean everything. This broom must be clean at all times in order to clean what it wants. When we say this broom must be clean, we mean our moral compass must be clear as to not offend anyone of us. Setting ground rules that we all follow as productive team members and most importantly, grown adults, will help towards achieving any team work assigned to us.

By learning our teammate’s lenses we will be able to communicate with each other effectively and continue to motivate each other to complete our work.

Teammates might also get frustrated with learning pace of another. This is not an option. We all have different learning styles and learn at different rates. As teammates we need to pay attention to the amount of effort the other person is putting into their work and do what we can to help as much as possible.

5. What obstacles might arise from different ethical perspectives among team members?

Each one of our moral compasses is different. Each one of us was brought up with different values so what one can think is acceptable, the other one might say is completely not. Culture and Ethnicity play big roles on how we judge, accept, and react to each other’s point of view. This is the basis of our American Culture. We need to use the “Melting Pot” analogy to get our points of view across in order to make our team work valid…

6. How might these factors, diversity, attitude, learning and work styles, and ethical perspective be used to resolve conflicts?

Diversity can resolve conflicts as our cultures and ethnicity each bring different solutions to problems. Each culture has a unique way of solving issues that any one of us can use to our advantage….

Our attitudes as a team will vary from time to time. If we see that one of our team members is struggling, the others can help motivate that person so long as we keep the right attitude when it comes to dealing with each other.

Our learning and work styles can help cover each other’s weaknesses. We all have a military background which brings a special type of uniformity when it comes to our work ethic and helping to cover down. The differences between us have to do with the different types of jobs we have held in and out of the military. These differences can prove to be beneficial as we move on to future classes that have to do with certain areas that some may have experience in and others that do not.
