Cheaters: In an Academic Environment

Upholding Academic Honesty is not only ethical, but it is enforced by most institutions of higher learning. If a student should use the ideas of an outside source he or she must properly cite every resource used; fail to do so is plagiarism. Plagiarism is a serious issue and seems to be getting out of hand since the technology boom. The internet has paved the way for cheating students; making writing assignments as easy as clicking a mouse. Some students in today’s world are finding it easier than ever to cheat. With websites that specialize in selling term papers to lazy students; how can teachers ensure that their students deserve the grade? High speed technology has been wonderful for our economy and way of life; however, it has also put academic honesty to the ultimate test.

Before Computers

Plagiarism is a crime that has been committed continually ever since the written word; the Middle Ages and Renaissance saw the continuous use of others ideas without proper recognition. Romans stealing from the Greeks, and the thousand times over, re-written versions of all the biblical books being inexactly transferred from a millennia of ancient scribes and medieval scripts. During the time of the Renaissance, thoughts and ideas were used quite regularly without due acknowledgement. Authorship did not come about until the late fifteenth century, when printing written works changed the very idea that piracy was unacceptable, demanding protection (Hoberman, 1985; Granitz & Loewy, 2007).

As you can see, plagiarism is a part of history. Before the development of writing; stories and ideas were passed on by mouth. When people began to write, anyone could sign their name and call
