What is the relationship between ethics and critical thinking? Did ethics play a part in the example of critical thinking you discussed in Week Four?

Critical thinking plays a large part in ethics because it helps us determine for ourselves if something is wrong or right. When in a critical thinking project so many times even when we don’t realize we are incorporating ethics into are thinking process. By doing so we have the ability to effectively make decisions based upon truths and verified information rather than unknowns. When the unknowns are eliminated it brings you the plain truths which exist and make a decision based on that. Ethics plays a large part in my critical thinking from last week. My decision to quit smoking is not only based on facts but as well as having ethical points that were addressed. In a developing a decision, as important as quitting smoking, it is important to use ethics with your critical thinking. Even when you’re not considering ethics, somewhere in the process ethics are either consciously or subconsciously used or woven into our critical thinking.

Ethics are a concern in the academic environment because students should do the right thing to accomplish their classes morally correct. Ethics test a student’s will power. So many people would rather do the easiest way to accomplish their work. Even if it doesn’t mean doing the right thing they’ll do it anyways. There are so many examples of unethical things that are done in the academic environment. Some of those examples are bribing teachers to raise your grades, plagiarizing or hacking in to change your grade. When someone does something like this they are only hurting themselves. The one example that I believe is the most often unethical is plagiarism. Plagiarism is the act of taking someone else’s work and passing it on as your own. By taking someone’s work is telling your instructor as well as your peers that you don’t care enough about your future to actually do the work set in front of you. The reason I believe that this most important to me is because it definitely shows someone’s worth to me when they’re caught doing something like this.
