The first general education competency I chose was to “communicate clearly in a variety of modes and media.” I chose the competency because it can benefit me both professionally and academically. I would like to pursue a career in the pediatric dental field which entails an everyday routine of communicating with patients and their parents. Communication is also a key skill to have between all the coworkers, to ensure that all charts are one hundred percent accurate and that a patient is not administered any medications twice. I believe that in any field communication is key however this everyday skill is needed way before you practice your profession, for example in a classroom. Academically communication can allow you to properly understand

Journey to Iba

...abilities at times and crack under pressure too but the thought of finally procuring it keeps you from giving up, helps you getting yourself together again and lets you go on with it. In the end, when you reach where you were aspiring to be, all those hardships that you went through become the rising action of your epic story that you later share with others being the protagonist. Institute of business administration of Dhaka University is the leading business school of Bangladesh par excellence. My desire of being part of this peerless institution started with my eldest sister’s dream of getting into IBA. I was an eighth-grader back then. She used to go into raptures talking about IBA and of how splendid the campus, the faculty and the education there are which also sparked something in me. She worked her fingers to the bone but alas, she wasn’t shortlisted. This setback had distressed my sister as well as our family severely because we were all holding onto the hope of her selection. It took all of us a while to recover from the despair. The dream had been then passed on to sibling to sibling but unfortunately it resulted in our parents’ disappointment only. However, as the superstitious phrase goes “Third time's the charm", it was the same for us three sisters. I was the last in our family to try for IBA and the first to get through to IBA. So I have my family to thank for the inspiration and motivation. By the grace of God,...

...Speech and Language Therapist A speech and language therapist is someone who assesses and treats speech, language and communication problems in people of all ages which would help them in the future to help them to communicate better. A speech and language therapist is also known as a SLT. Some of the problems a SLT may face while at work is if the child or adult has difficulty producing speech (this is the phonetics, an example of this would the production of a vowel- the mouth is opened and there is air forced from the lungs through the larynx leading the vocal folds vibrate. If the sounds have a higher frequency they would have a higher pitch. Another thing a SLT does is helps to understand and help to use the language being produced, any people who have difficulty feeding, chewing or swallowing, if the patient has a stammer or a voice problem. The people who get referred to a SLT could have problems from a stroke, if they have a learning disability such as autism; it could also be a neurological disorder such as Parkinson’s, cancer of the mouth and throat, a head injury or even a clef plate. Some of the places that a SLT could work is in a hospital setting (they would normally have their own ward), in a community health centre, within a mainstream school which would have children with speech difficulties, a special school, within a home and in an assessment unit and day centres. Some skills which are useful for a speech and language therapist is that they have good...

Accounting and Finance Personal Statement

...It was when I earned my first pound at the age of ten washing my mother's car that I became interested in the power of money. Over time it became clear to me that the people who understand the monetary and banking system are capable of understanding the decisions made by governments and the future of society. I want to be one of those people. To broaden my knowledge of different areas of finance, I have read a number of different books on the subject - from "How the City of London Works" to "Rich Dad Poor Dad". I am also a regular reader of the Economist magazine. I believe that reading such books and magazines has given me insight into topics not covered at school, for example how Japanese management in Chinese factories caused unrest among the workforce due to the Chinese workers' dislike of the Japanese management style, and how this affected the share price of companies such as Honda. Reading about such things has made me realise how the subject of Finance and the economy affects everybody's lives, and has strengthened my desire to further study the subject. The A-level subjects I am studying give me a firm foundation for studying Finance at University. Business Studies at A-level has greatly improved my analytical and writing skills. I have particularly enjoyed the part of the course which concerns how a firm selects financial strategies and how managers choose which aspect of a firm needs the most investment. German has improved my communication skills and self-confidence...
