Since 2011, HTC has lost a majority of its market share to Samsung and other competitors. The major reason behind this was the management’s blind eye towards the marketing front. HTC is known to be a highly innovative company coming up with a good mix of robust yet stylish smartphones. The company believed that its cutting edge technology would be enough to sell its phones. HTC has an array of superb phones, but, the general consumer may not remember even one of these phones. Every year there are at least 2 or 3 HTC phones which make it to the top ten lists for the year. Still, the recall value for HTC is nowhere near the same for Samsung or for the Apple IPhone. There are ample reasons to believe that a more aggressive marketing strategy could have helped HTC to grab a major chunk of the market share. The spread of globalization and marketing during the last century triggered the proliferation of advertising genres. The goal of advertisements is to persuade consumers to act or think in a textually determined way in order to boost sales of particular commodities and services. In order to capture attention, convey the message and persuade the consumer, advertising texts use a range of manipulative language devices. Moreover, different cultures may have different expectations with regard to stylistic choices, language use and other preferences in the same genre. Hence the aim of the article is to analyze the language of advertising in English and Lithuanian in order to estimate the specificities of the advertising genre in the two different cultural and linguistic systems. The approach employed in the study draws on the ideas of the functionalist interpretation of text typology and source text analysis as proposed by Nord (1997) and Reiss (2000). The functionalist approach provides an in-depth understanding of the source and target text conventions and functions which are prerequisites for successful intercultural communication and translation. ...Functional Analysis of Anticipatory ''It'' Lexical Bundles in Political Speeches Abstract This paper investigates a particular structural group of frequent word combinations referred to as ‘anticipatory it lexical bundles’. Lexical bundles are words formed that often co- occur in longer sequences. They are not idiomatic or structurally complete, but the sequences are building blocks in discourse and are so common and recurrent that the readers and listeners should pay much attention to them. The paper aims at showing and exploring structures and functions of the 'anticipatory it lexical bundles' presented in political speeches. This paper adopts Hewings and Hewings's categorization of interpersonal functions of 'anticipatory it lexical bundles'. Furthermore, the present investigation scrutinizes the interpersonal functions of 'anticipatory it lexical bundles' in the discourse of political speeches delivered by British politician 'Margaret Thatcher'. The structural and functional types of 'anticipatory it lexical bundles' found in the speeches under analysis are described and compared. But this is a large and daunting publication; few but professional editors navigate with confidence amid its complexities. So in an effort to produce a very abbreviated guide useful for art history students, I have assembled a few notes here that I hope will prove useful. I first assembled this information in typescript form in 1989 and circulated it to students who wanted some guidelines. In 1993, I issued the same material as a brochure. When that was exhausted, I decided in May 1996 not to reprint the brochure, but rather to put the information up on the Web. (That's a pretty good indication of the way that changes in technology have affected teaching in the past six years, at least in my courses.) I have to say that niceties of tabs and indents seem to elude me with this program that I am using, so on occasion the guidelines will suggest a format that I am not following here. Not surprisingly, few characters hold honesty in high regard. However, we see how hard it is for characters to set things straight once they’ve lied about them. As the situation gets increasingly complicated, characters must weave more complex lies to get out of the tangles of their previous lies. Eventually they reach the point where lies will no longer work and the truth is revealed. Perhaps the most striking thing is that none of the characters ever shows true remorse or guilt about lying. 1. Algernon: Yes. But why does your aunt call you her uncle? There are many aspects to security and many applications, ranging from secure commerce and payments to private communications and protecting passwords. One essential aspect for secure communications is that of cryptography, which is the focus of this chapter. But it is important to note that while cryptography is necessary for secure communications, it is not by itself sufficient. The reader is advised, then, that the topics covered in this chapter only describe the first of many steps necessary for better security in any number of situations. This paper has two major purposes. The first is to define some of the terms and concepts behind basic cryptographic methods, and to offer a way to compare the myriad cryptographic schemes in use today.
