Chronic Disease Risk Assessment

Lung Cancer, as defined by Merriam-Webster, is “cancer of a highly malignant form that affects the lungs, tends to metastasize to other parts of the body, and is characterized by small round or oval cells which resemble oat grains and have little cytoplasm.” It forms within the cells that line the air passages. Lung cancer has two main forms: non-small cell and small cell.

The majority of all lung cancer cases are caused by smoking, which is most often seen in patients that are or were heavy smokers. While smoking also contributes to non-small cell cancer, it also includes several types of cancers. In chapter 12 of our readings it states that “of the several lifestyle risk factors for cancer, tobacco use is perhaps the most significant and the most preventable.” Our readings also state that male smoker’s relative risk is of developing cancer is about 23 times higher than a male nonsmoker. Age and sex are major risk factors as well. Table 12.3 of chapter 12 shows that 1 in 101 men and 1 in 124 women will develop lung cancer between ages forty and 59.

According to an article I found (http://lungcancer.about.com/od/whatislungcancer/a/lungcancerwomen.htm), lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer related deaths in women despite the male probability of contraction showing a slightly higher result. More woman die from lung cancer yearly than the next three cancer related causes combined. Ironically, a higher percentage of woman who have never smoked develop lung cancer. This is in part, contributed to a genetic predisposition. Some studies show that women may be more susceptible to the carcinogens found in cigarettes and that women often develop cancer after fewer years of smoking than men.

According to the American Cancer Society, secondhand smoke, or side stream smoke, can be just as deadly as

He takes care of the over all activities of this department. Mr.Sunil Azgaonkar was very kind in sharing his knowledge with me and also in givingme an overview of how the stores department at Geno Pharmacueticals functions. The stores department is the heart of any organisation. It is where all the issuing and receiving takes place. The marketing department first gets the orders that are generated .i.e is how much sale has to be made. Later on the production planning control department does the job of finalising how much has to be produced, they have something called a production programme which helps them know according the amount of tablets, capsules, liquids or ointments that have to be produced. Next step is where the stores department issues an indent to the purchase department to make the necessary purchases of the raw materials required for production. The purchase department inturn will approach approved suppliers or vendors and place a purchase order. Once the materials are received from the approved vendore and suppliers they are sent to a room called the ‘re-dusting’ room. In this room all the materials are cleansed for eg: if...

The Big 12 is pretty silly. Hey, I get that this was how life worked in the Big Eight and is how it works in many other leagues. This ain't the Big Eight. Allowing Oklahoma to celebrate a Big 12 title and giving the Sooners a trophy for it is silly. It was different when the trophies were for division titles. Inhumanity in Our World

...Kyle Walker English 2-H Faigenbaum 5/1/2012 Research Essay Assignment Inhumanity In Our World Genocide is one of the most evil moral crimes any ruling authority such as a government can commit against its people. A general definition of ‘Genocide’ is the intention to destroy or murder people because of their race, beliefs, or even political and economic status. Legal expert, Raphael Lemkin, created the term ‘Genocide’ 1944. Lemkin, a Polish Attorney, combined the ancient Greek word ‘genos’ which means race and the Latin word ‘cide’ which translates to killing. There are many examples of genocide in the world but the most recognizable is that of the Holocaust and how the German powers that be sought and attempted to kill all Jews. A recent example is the Rawandan Genocide in 1994 where the assassination of Juvénal Habyarimana caused a violent reaction resulting in mass killings. In efforts to reduce Genocide, the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (UHCG) was adopted by the United Nations in 1948 and was placed in force in 1951. On July 1, 2002 the International Criminal Court (ICC) came into force. The ICC not only accepted the UHCG’s definition of Genocide but expanded it to include crimes against humanity such as enslavement, deportation, torture, rape, enforced disappearance and apartheid. There have been many organizations created throughout the world to defend and prevent Genocide. Communities, Religions and even Colleges are forming...

Coaching and Gender

...have men coaching women’s sports while there are no women coaching male sports such as football. Another issue may be whether or not men are really better coaches then women and what the reason for that would be. The third issue that results because of gender inequalities seen in coaching such as how far is too far for male coaches coaching females in sports. The first thing I would like to talk about is whether it is right for men to coach women’s teams even if there are no women coaching male teams. In my opinion there is nothing wrong with this and I feel like the statistics back this up. To my knowledge there has never been a female athlete at a big time college that has complained that she wants a female coach. And to back this up, Geno Auriemma is one of the greatest coaches in women’s college basketball ever and he continues to get great recruits because girls want to play for him. However if females where to coach a men’s basketball team I doubt there would be many guys at UF that would be happy if some women came in and took Billy Donovan’s place because quite honestly it would be tough for her to do a good job simply because it’s a tougher much faster game then women’s basketball and its a lot easier to coach when you know how to play it. The second reason I think that this is ok is because generally men are better coaches then women and the bottom line is that professional and college sports teams make money if they win so you want to find coaches who win. In no...

Holocaust Considered Genocide Research Paper

...Jonathan Zarate Ms. Davis World Literature 15 December 2016 Is the Holocaust Considered Genocide? In 1944, Raphael Lemkin, a Polish-Jewish lawyer, used the Greek word ‘genos’ (race, tribe) and the Latin word ‘cide’ (killing) to make up the word we know today as genocide. The Holocaust was a genocidal occurring during the 1940’s. During this time about six million Jews were killed. Jews were forced to work in harsh conditions and were given very little food to eat. This resulted in a tragic event that will be remembered throughout history. Some believe the Holocaust is not considered genocide, however they are incorrect. The Holocaust should be considered an example of genocide based on the United Nation’s definition, the stages of genocide, and specific evidence provided in the memoir “Night”....

Johnny Manziel Chooses Ssg, Maverick Carter's Lrmr as Representation

...coming after me and there was so much criticism," Manziel said. "I feel like LeBron deals with that every single day of his life." A source close to the negotiations over Manziel's representation told ESPN.com that Manziel had always admired James' off-the-court business empire. Manziel was seen sitting courtside with Carter for the team's game against the Golden State Warriors last week. Manziel's choice of SSG isn't much of a surprise either, as it leaked back in December that Manziel would sign with the agency, per sports business reporter Darren Heitner. The Houston-based sports agency has plenty of football expertise, as Forbes listed SSG as the 10th-most valuable NFL agency in 2013. Perhaps SSG is best known for being Geno Smith's former agency, as the New York Jets rookie terminated his relationship with SSG shortly after the 2013 NFL draft. As of Jan. 6, the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner was still undecided on whether he was going to forgo the final two years of...

...Members: * Marco, Geno S. * Quidayan, Aedrian H. * Rabisanto, Lyka B. * Taclan, Aira Mae M. * Veridiano, John Paulo D. (Chapter I) INTRODUCTION: Rationale and importance. Learning is very important. As human beings we are expected to learn to be able to cope with the new generation. To be able to learn effectively, one must have a good study habits. Study habits are the ways that you study- the habits that you have formed during your school years. Study habits include being organized, keeping good notes, reading your textbook, listening in class, and working everyday. However, there are factors that can hinder students to have a good study habits, which are the learning environment; socioeconomic status; the teacher; nutrition and students’ motivation to study. Study habits are learning tendencies that enable students to work privately. Azikiwe (1998) describes the study habit as “the adopted way and manner a student plans his private readings, after classroom learning so as to attain mastery of the subject”. According to her, “good study habits are good assets to learners because they (habits) assist students to attain mastery in areas of specialization and consequent excellent performance, while opposite constitute constraints to learning and achievement leading to failure”. Good (1998) define the term study habits as: The student’s way of study whether systematic, efficient or inefficient...

Foodborne Illness

...The foodborne illness I chose would be: Norovirus (formerly Norwalk virus) 1. What is the infectious agent that causes this infectious disease? Norovirus agent is caused by nonenveloped, single-stranded RNA viruses of the genus Norovirus, which have also been referred as Norwalk virus or small round-structured viruses of the family Caliciviridae. Other genera within the Caliciviridae family include Sapovirus which also cause acute gastroenteritis in persons as well. Norovirus can be divided into at least five geno groups designated GI---GV based on amino acid identity in the major structure protein. The strains that infect humans (referred to collectively “human noroviruses”) are found in GI, GII, and GIV. Since 2001, GII.4 viruses have been associated with majority of viral gastroenteritis outbreaks worldwide. Recent studies have demonstrated that these viruses evolve over time through serial changes in the VP1 sequence, which allow invasion of immunity in the human population. 2. How is this infectious agent transmitted through food or water? Transmission occurs primarily through fecal-oral route, either through direct person to person contact or indirectly via contaminated food or water. Norovirus is also indirectly through aerosols or vomitus and contaminated environmental surfaces and objects. Having contact with someone who is infected with norovirus (for example, caring for or sharing food or eating utensils with someone with norovirus illness). Norovirus is a...

Examples Of Genocide

...The Holocaust What is Genocide? Ushmm.org says genocide is a term used to describe violence against members of a national, ethnical, racial, or religious group with the intent to destroy the entire group. In 1944, a Polish-Jewish lawyer named Raphael Lemkin (1900-1959) sought to describe Nazi policies of systematic murder, including the destruction of the European Jews. He formed the word "genocide" by combining geno-, from the Greek word for race or tribe, with -cide, derived from the Latin word for killing. The Holocaust is one of many examples of genocide. On January 30th, 1933 according to ushmm.org, the Jewish population in Europe stood at nine million. Most Jews lived in the areas the Nazi’s would later occupy during World War II. In 1945, The Germans and collaborators had killed two of three...

Future World

...Future World Essay HLT-305 June 6, 2012 Future World The Human Genome Project, established in 1990, is a worldwide joint project to detect and make a note of all the areas of every gene of the human race. (genome sequencing consortium. initial sequencing and analysis of the human genome. nature 409 (2001): 860–921) I This project was stumbled upon with very basic of knowledge of what it could do. The human genome project can be used to eradicate disease by pen pointing the problem and genetically altering or manipulating a positive change. However I do not feel that this is a natural process or that is should be allowed to be used; I believe that God created people as he wanted them and that this human genome project is boarder line of scientist trying to imitate God and his marvelous works. (Davies, Kevin. cracking the genome: inside the race to unlock human dna. New York: free press, 2001) Eradicating diseases are much needed and can prove to be very helpful through research, however I think genetics where meant to be passed from generation to generation. The term positive eugenics is an oxymoron; it somehow seems that these two words collide with each other as if they do not fit. However, negative genetic engineering consists of justifying or taking out genes to stop or take care of genetic disease. It is difficult to think that humans could perhaps control reproduction and decide on offspring in a way that will be moral for society as a whole...

Bloodtypes

...Your best friend can eat every doughnut, cake and cookie that lands on a cafeteria plate and not gain a pound. If you look at a strawberry with sugar on it you gain twenty pounds of unwanted back fat. Why? It’s simple you have a different genetic composition that influences what you can and cannot eat. Understanding your genetic blood type could be the key to unlocking the foods that make you feel great and help you loose weight. One of the foundations of eating healthy and understanding the benefits is establishing what works for you. We are all different and individualized; therefore a nutrition plan that works for one will not necessarily work for another. Dr. Peter D’Adamao was one of the first to take this theory to the next step in 1996 by introducing the Blood Type Diet. Dr. D’Adamao (2008) believes, that the way to determine a proper diet is to begin with an individual blood type. This theory holds more weight than one might assume. Think of every time you go to the doctor, they typically ask about any genetic issues that you might be pre-disposed to having. This information allows doctors to determine what path to follow when assessing your illness. Well take this question and expand it into nutrition and health. Using an individual blood type to determine proper healthful eating habits could be the answer to many nutritional, weight loss and health issues. Essentially, we are what we inherit you could have your father’s eyes or your mom’s hair. Neither of...

Concrete as a Building Material

...Concrete as a building material Name: Institution Concrete is a building material which has been in use since the Roman times. It is a complex mixture of water, coarse granular material usually sand or gravel. Cement fills the spaces among the granular material and acts as a binder that glues them together. The Panama Canal, the Hoover Dam, and the Roman Pantheon are some of renowned structures made of concrete. (PCA) Concrete usage dates back thousands of years ago. Concrete was used for building of many ancient structures. Heinrich Schliemann, a German archaeologist discovered concrete floors in a royal palace of Tiryns, Greece, which dates approximately 1400-1200 BC. The Romans also used concrete on large scale from 300 BC to 476 AD. Roman concrete was made from an aggregate of pumice, pozzolana and quicklime. (Jacobs 4). Modern concrete is different from the Romans concrete in two ways. First, its mixer of a homogeneous fluid, this allows it to be poured into forms instead of hand-layering together with the arrangement of gravel, in Roman practice, this comprised of debris. Second, modern cement is integrated with steel that reinforces it to great strength in tension. Roman concrete depended only on the strength of the concrete bonds to withstand tension. The idea of reinforced concrete was invented by Joseph Monier in 1849. The first reinforced concrete bridge was built that year. (Constructor) Concrete has many benefits. It is economical when ingredients are readily...
