Geocaching: A Modern-Day Treasure Hunt
Geocaching has become a widespread hobby of many people in the last few years in numerous countries, including the Czech Republic. It’s almost unbelievable how basically a good-old treasure hunt has overtaken so many people’s free time in this modern era of computers and all sorts of modern technologies, which confide us even more and more inside. However, maybe the growing success of geocaching is based exactly on that premise since it combines the old – spending time outside – with the new – modern technologies. According to an unofficial geocaching handbook “Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunt where you get to play Indiana Jones and search for hidden booty. (Wearing a fedora and carrying a whip are completely up to you.)” (McNamara 10). This very general definition of geocaching might sound ridiculously over the top, which is probably intentional, but actually with a proper dose of imagination everything is possible in the world of geocaching and all one needs is a functional GPS device and an online geocaching account. So while many people spend their Sundays all boxed-up inside watching some unimpressive reality show on their TV, there is a constantly growing community of geocachers who go out there and search for a vast variety of caches hidden all over the woods, cities and basically just about everywhere you can think of and more importantly even in places
