He blinks. But I refuse to pull my gaze from his. They say the eye is the window to the soul, and currently all I can see are the trails of thought trickling through his mind. Somehow, I always knew that it was going to finish, that he was going to run back to her. She has money, wealth, class; my life is nothing more than a downhill slope into a never-ending abyss. Mr Gerald Croft is one of them, and I – as Eva Smith and Daisy Renton - am not. It’s simple. Yet that fact does not stop me clinging to him as if he were the only life jacket left upon a sinking ship, praying that he will become my Prince Charming just one more time. Silence reigns for a moment. I hold on to him, my hands shaking. When I dare to glance up, he looks down at me with pity, a pity that I cannot bear, and before he even opens his mouth I know what is coming. But all my forehand knowledge doesn’t stop my heart being wrenched in two when he speaks.
It’s hard to forget the moment I first laid eyes on Gerald Croft. Naïve, innocent, juvenile, I had crept to the Palace Bar for work. I was desperate. Knowing that he had an affluent, flawless fiancé back at home didn’t change anything for me; I told myself over and over and over that his engagement was arranged. She was the one he was forced to have, but I was the girl he chose. Chosen by Mr Gerald Croft! She had all her fancy frocks, but at that time, the handsome fairy-tale prince was all mine. Every day after work he would visit me, and I can honestly say that those hours we spent together were the finest hours of my dreary life. When I was with him, it felt as though I was soaring, that nothing from my past could touch me. No drunken men could lay a hand on me while Gerald was by my side. If those five months could have gone on for all eternity I would be the most contented woman
