The effect that the depression had on migrant farm workers was that they were lonely. The great depression also caused the migrant workers from succeeding or searching for their
American dream which was to have a good job with great payments and not alone. The quote from paragraph 3 says " These lonely men wandered the countryside looking for work, begging for food, and sometimes, in desperation, helping themselves to whatever they came across their wanderings." This quote proves and explains how the migrant workers were affected because of the depression. It shows that because of the depression, the workers were lonely looking for jobs, food, and a house to live in. Crooks from the novel was a migrant farm worker and was affected emotionally by the depression. He was a black man that no one ever talked too and he made a little money from his job and didn't have that much food to feed himself as well as the migrant workers. He was so lonely that he had a little room with himself alone. He got depressed from being lonely that he tried to scare Loonie that George won't come back and break them apart. He was even mean because of the depression and was treated even more unfairly because of his skin color. Most people during the great depression lost their family, friends, jobs and their houses. They had no money, no food that sometimes they asked their friends for food and money. When they earned a little money, they would right away waste it for drinks and food because they had nothing. They didn't save any money for their future because they knew they wouldn't have one and needed to spend it on some things more important. Their American dream was to have success which was to have work where they get paid, a happy life with family or friends, but they didn't have any idea or view that their dream can succeed. This paragraph talks about the American dream or the dream people had during the depression.
One example from the novel that connects with the paragraph is how every character dreamed of something that they thought it would come true and was coming true, but then it doesn't. For example, George and Lonnie had a dream that every migrant worker wishes which was to have a little house with some animals, some money, food, and a good job with payments. But George and Lonnie had each other which some migrant workers dreamed to have. Another character is
Candy and how he was going to live with George and Lonnie and have a little house with them too. But that dream also didn't come true and that relates to the article that a lot of people dreamed of the same dream and went through a lot, but their dream didn't come true. Both the article and the novel share loneliness, poorness, and the American dream that everyone wanted to have.
