“Ghosts”

Chimamanda Adichie’s, “Ghosts,” tells a story about a day in the life of James Nwoye. The story begins with Nwoye, a retired professor, going to the University bursary to inquire about his long overdue pension. While there, he runs into an old acquaintance, Ikenna Okoro, with whom he taught with at the University prior to the Nigerian-Biafran War. It had been generally accepted within the community that Ikenna had died during the war, so James was quite surprised to see his old friend “return from the dead,” so to speak. The two talk for quite some time; inquiring about each other’s families, and saying how much has changed since they have returned to Nigeria. Nwoye informs Ikenna that he is often visited by the “ghost” of his deceased wife, and the narrative ends with Nwoye, “listen[ing] for the sound of doors opening and closing” (73). Through the employment of narratological devices such as free indirect discourse, direct discourse, and the first-person focalization, the narrative serves to highlight the major themes of impotence, sterility, and sociopolitical gaps that arose in the aftermath of the war. Through free indirect discourse, we are given insight into the impotence and sterility afflicting the poverty-stricken country. Clustered under a flame tree are men talking amongst themselves, calling down curses upon the education minister and vice chancellor whom they believe embezzled school funds. “His penis will quench,” they say, “His children will not have children” (58). These sentiments are adapted through Nwoye as the narrator, while maintaining the grammatical third person. Through this free indirect style, we are given insight into the frustrations of the Biafran war victims. Their curses reflect their own feelings of helplessness and impotence in a country where violence and bribery has stripped residents of their agency. Another example of free indirect discourse which helps to highlight the themes of impotence and sterility can be found in Nwoye’s disbelief that Ikenna is alive. When Ikenna laughs and responds, “I am, I am alive!” (62), Nwoye notices that, “his [Ikenna] laughter seemed discolored, hollow, nothing like the aggressive sound that reverberated all over the Staff Club in those days” (62). This stands in stark contrast to Ikenna’s, “erudite asperity with which he blazed through issues” (61), before the war broke out. Through this free indirect discourse, it becomes evident that Ikenna has lost his fire. Although Ikenna does not experience the sexual impotence and sterility that Nwoye suffers from, it seems that he too has lost his way in the aftermath of the war. In addition to free indirect discourse, Adichie also employs direct discourse to further reinforce the themes of impotence and sterility. James Nwoye, the narrator of the story, is himself afflicted with impotence – his wife comes to him as a “ghost” and touches him sexually not to pleasure James, but to gently tease him – he says that, “She knows very well that my prostate medication has deadened things down there” (72). Nwoye’s interactions with the ghost of his wife serve to highlight his impotence. It is as if Nwoye finds himself powerless against his sterility – unable to control the visits from the ghost of his wife. The seemingly inescapable bond that Nwoye finds himself trapped within, helps to highlight the sociopolitical gaps that are referenced within the narrative. From the first-person focalization of the narrative, we are given direct insight into the severity of the sociopolitical gaps, and how they have impacted Nwoye himself. When talking with Ikenna about his long overdue pension, Nwoye says, ““It’s all over the country, really, not just here.” I shook my head in that slow, side-to-side way… as if to say that the situation is, sadly, ineluctable” (69). From this, the text seems to suggest that Nwoye has given up in his fight for reform. It seems as if he has bought into the notion that he is unable to evoke any real change, and as a result has come to accept his condition as his fate. This is further reinforced later in the conversation when Ikenna talks about the “falling standards” (69), of the world in regards to the sale of fake drugs; the very thing which ultimately killed Nwoye’s wife. Nwoye simply responds, ““Fake drags are horrible,” I said gravely, determined to say nothing else” (70). Through this first-person focalization, and the fact that Nwoye is “determined to say nothing else,” it becomes evident that the sociopolitical gaps that occurred as a result of the war have engendered a sense of pacifism within Nwoye. Instead of addressing the sale of fake drugs with Ikenna, Nwoye simply offers a trite response, and tries to bury the painful memories of his past. The aftermath of the war paved way for social and political corruption which permeated throughout the entirety of Nigeria’s infrastructure. Another example of how the first-person focalization helps illuminate sociopolitical gaps within the narrative can be found when Nwoye compares his present condition, with that of the time when he lived in America. Nwoye refers to America as a place, “cushioned by so much convenience that it is sterile. A life with what we call “opportunities” (67). Through this first-person focalization, it seems as if the text is suggesting that Nigerians, in the turmoil of a post-civil war period, must choose between a political and social impotence at home caused by a corrupt system, or, a self-imposed sterility resulting from the whimsical, “convenient,” life of America, in which they struggle to maintain their cultural identities. The struggle for identity as well as corruption within the Nigerian government, are undoubtedly a result of the social and political gaps that occurred in the aftermath of the war. In summation, the above mentioned narratological devices help to reinforce the themes of impotence, sterility and sociopolitical gaps within the narrative. Through the free indirect and direct discourse, as well as the first-person focalization, we are given insight into the reality of the struggles that Nigerians faced as a result of their civil war. Adichie cleverly uses Nwoye as a vehicle through which she expresses the sufferings of not just one man, but of the entire population of her native country. Ultimately, we are left to speculate who are the “ghosts” within the story – Is it Nwoye himself? Ebere? Ikenna? Although we may never know, it can be argued that all three of the characters are ghosts – simultaneously alive and dead.

Ghosts

...Ghosts and spirits have haunted the world for centuries or so some believe. Christian theology talks of the transcending of certain ghostly imitations also known as demons or poltergeists. ( Wiebe,p.1). Although the origin of ghosts descends far back into time the belief of ghost varies from person to person. There are endless sightings, photographs, and unexplained mysteries. There has never been a confirmed announcement of the existence of ghosts but there has never been a declaration of no possibilities either. How is it known if they are real? There is no way of knowing for sure. It is a choice people must make for themselves to accept the reality or to accept the falsehood. The most important question is what convinces people of something that is not in confirmed as a fact in a science textbook? “The savage or barbarian has never learned to make that rigid distinction between imagination and reality, to enforce which is one of the main results of scientific education.” ( Wiebe, .1) Those that do believe in ghosts say that they are transparent materializations of a person who has died. Ghosts have been described as human in size and gossamer in their appearance. It is the essence of the soul that has decided to have an extended vacation on the planet. Reasons for this haunted apparition walking around without its mask varies. Fanatical experiences and brutal deaths can excrete enough energy to leave an imitation of the event behind. A bloodthirsty murder can leave an imprint...

...GHOSTS The obscure question that whether ghosts exist or not has gone back thousands of years and although some believe that they are real there are also those who think that they don’t exist. There are many ways to prove that ghosts are real but the three main facts that prove that they exist are, first, they have been sighted by thousands of people from all over the world. Second, they are a part of many religions and last, ghosts have been caught in many pictures and on tape several times. There have been thousands of ghost sightings from all around the world. Some people have seen some grotesque looking ghosts while others have seen rather beautiful, good-looking ghosts. A very popular and well-known one is the ghost of Stanley Hotel. Employees have reported hearing the clamour of a great party in the grand ballroom when there is no one there and many guests have reported seeing ghostly figures in their rooms at night. Lord Dunraven, the previous owner of the land the property was built on, can be seen standing over the bed or looking out the window of room 407. It is relevant that he is widely blamed for any jewelry or valuables that have gone missing in the hotel over the years. There are many religions out there that believe in some kind of ghosts, spirits, or jins. For example, the Islamic faith believes that there are jins and they also live on this planet with us. They are also a creation of god just like us humans and they are not usually visible to normal...

...The themes in the Canterville Ghost The Canterville Ghost is a ghost story. Ghost stories belong to the genre called horror literature, whose purpose is to scare the reader with situations that cause horror or fear. The most common technique is suspense, the slow insinuating of a doubt or of a frightening revelation, which keeps the reader interested.    This story can be defined an inverted ghost story, because a lot of elements are different from the traditional ones. The main difference is the fact that Mr Otis is not scared by the ghost, while usually people should be. Moreover, the Ghost itself is frightened by the Otis twins.    There is also comic relief bordering on farce, including buckets of water balanced on half-open doors. But the story has a dark centre. The crime and retribution which led to the haunting is ghastly, and this is really not a comedy at all, but a tale of redemption through the power of love. The innocent girl of the family, appropriately called Virginia, prays for the ghost and endures terrifying if unnamed experiences to release the ghost.   Also, The Canterville Ghost is both a parody of the traditional ghost story and a satire of the American way of life. Wilde obviously intends to satirize American materialism, but he pokes fun at English traditional culture as well. American vs. British society: “The Canterville Ghost” is a study in contrasts. Wilde takes an American family, places them in a British setting, then, through a series...

Nils has to find a way to deal with it too. Maybe he can ask hotel management to hire a temporary specialist to change the image. 2) What would you do and why? Discuss briefly. (10 marks) I am from Turkey and I am very familiar to superstitions which imposes behavior of publics. In these kind of cases, it is not so likely and easy to convince a person to believe there is no such thing as ghost. Instead of fighting against paranormal with rationalist point of view, I would come up with an idea from Thai’s own belief set. In other words, Ghost stories could be a part of Thai culture and most of the people may believe the existence of evil spirits. However 95% of the Thailand population follow Buddhism religion which encourages people to approach to those evil spirits with kindness and goodness. Buddha himself teaches his followers not to scare from these ghosts. If I were Nils, I would use Buddhist religion against Thai culture and tradition. Moreover, I would start a campaign to attract people thanks to the holiness of the region. If it is necessary to be cruel, I can even...

People's Belief in Ghost

...People’s Belief in Ghost Have you ever walked down a dark alley at midnight? If so, maybe you started hearing strange sounds or voices without seeing someone there. Suddenly, a dog starts barking at nothing and you felt a cold shiver down your backbone for no apparent reason. If you experienced these things, it could be a good reason to believe in ghosts. Theoretically, a ghost is the soul of a person who has died and somehow has gotten stuck between two worlds. Normally, they do not know that they are dead and they still live amongst us. A ghost can be perceived by the senses of living people, such as by sight (apparition), hearing (sound, voice) and touch. Many stories have documented that ghosts are real but many people think they are just people’s illusions. Ghost is a popular topic throughout the millennium. They have appeared in numerous works and art forms, from the play “Macbeth” by Shakespeare to the Christian Bible and even some folk ghost stories have been released. The existence of ghosts was still a big mystery of mankind over hundreds of years. Some people believe in ghosts while others do not. To convince people of the existence of ghosts, there are several stories that can be told. One of them is the United States White House’s haunted story. The White House, where the United States President lives and work, has long been considered as the worst haunted place in that country. Harry Truman, America’s 33rd president, had affirmed that...

Ghost Do Exist

...Rakiiya Hearst December 3, 2012 X155 Ghost Do Exist A ghost is generally understood to be the disembodied spirit or soul of a once-living person. I do believe ghost exist. I’ve had many experiences with ghosts and hearing others tell their experiences, just makes me believe even more. I also believe that ghosts are real because of the research me and my sister have been doing since I started believing. There was a time when I was a non-believer and didn’t think ghost existed. My youngest sister is so fascinated with ghosts and pseudoscience. We share rooms, so when she watches TV (SyFy and Paranormal shows/movies) I have no choice but to watch it. That’s how I became a believer. It’s almost as if once you watch it or read about ghosts, you start having thoughts and strange things began happening. I start seeing things out the corner of my eye or even hearing the floor creak when I was home alone and there was no wind blowing (when it’s windy outside sometimes the wood on my house will creak). Most people believe that’s your mind playing tricks on you. But I believe that once you start believing in ghost then they’ll try to reach out to you and get your attention. One time, I was at home with my friend and I left my phone upstairs, on the bathroom sink. I was actually getting ready to flat iron my hair, but I went downstairs with my friend to keep her company while the curlers was heating up. We were sitting on the couch watching Punk’d on MTV. All of a sudden, we...

...apparent reason. If any of these things have happened to you, then you may have experienced paranormal activity. Or how many times growing up did someone tell you that ghosts are not real? Since the beginning of time, Whether or not ghosts actually exist is a debatable question in almost every culture and region around the world. Only a few people who believe in ghosts are able to point out countless instances of unexplained phenomena in which strange sightings and paranormal happenings have taken place. On the other hand, majority of the people are skeptics because they do not believe that there is anything beyond the natural world and they also dismiss such suggestions that “ghosts” are illusions of human imagination that have no scientific basis or proof. This paper explores the question: whether or not do ghosts really exist? Define ghosts and paranormal phenomena I am a believer of paranormal phenomena; there have always been superstitions about the paranormal. People who did believe in ghosts have tried to prove the skeptics wrong that there are things that we cannot see with our own eyes. Because of this, capturing paranormal phenomena, visiting actual haunted places, and discussing how spirits are able to attach to certain objects or even children are the key aspects on proving to the skeptics that ghosts are real.    Paranormal phenomena are very intriguing. Ghost Story

...going. Greenwood Lake was an interstate lake, lying in both New Jersey and New York State. During the resort era, several steamboats operated on the lake and they would meet the trains and take passengers to various resorts around the water in both states. After World War II and till this day, the area went under major renovations to change from a resort area to year round residences. A fellow friend of mine and resident of Bergen County was kind enough to share her experiences with the supernatural, all which occurred right under her own roof. It is not surprising that an area with so much history and life would generate ghostly phenomena. What makes this ghost story so interesting is that it is so unexpected. Sitting on a cold bench, right before practice, I figured I would ask around to see if anyone had any good ghost stories to tell. Little did I know that I would find one that would send chills down my spine. As the oldest sibling growing up in their two story house in Bergen county, Dana remembers a lot of her childhood as well as her brothers, who is only a couple of years younger. She made known that her house was in fact a vacation home that had the luxury of having the lake right in the backyard. It is a two-story house and after moving in they decided to put on addition. Below there!’ When he heard a voice thus calling to him, he was standing at the door of his box, with a flag in his hand, furled round its short pole. One would have thought, considering the nature of the ground, that he could not have doubted from what quarter the voice came; but instead of looking up to where I stood on the top of the steep cutting nearly over his head, he turned himself about, and looked down the Line. There was something remarkable in his manner of doing so, though I could not have said for my life what. But I know it was remarkable enough to attract my notice, even though his figure was foreshortened and shadowed, down in the deep trench, and mine was high above him, so steeped in the glow of an angry sunset, that I had shaded my eyes with my hand before I saw him at all. ‘Halloa! Below!’ From looking down the Line, he turned himself about again, and, raising his eyes, saw my figure high above him. ‘Is there any path by which I can come down and speak to you?’ 2 of 97 Three Ghost Stories He looked up at me without replying, and I looked down at him without pressing him too soon with a repetition of my idle question. ...Amayha Dycus ENGL 1102-03 Essay on Cohen’s Theses Ghost Nearly Always Escape Every scary movie with a monster ends with a traumatic event. Which many believe the monster is destroyed and will never return again. But as the audience we know nine times out of ten the monster escapes. So it is safe to say that the monster always escapes, except for some rare occasions. When the monster escapes it creates an “aww moment” for the audience because everybody cannot wait to see what happens in the next movie. Having the monster escape creates a desire for the audience to return to see the next movie or even see that same movie again. So what movie doesn’t have a monster escape, not very many if you think right off the top of your head. That is why I will be focusing on the topic that monsters always escape. After doing my research, I decided to focus on ghosts rather than the broad topic of monsters. Ghost are said to be souls of deceased humans that did not get into Heaven or Hell and are stuck on Earth. Majority of the time, they reside in The Veil, but sometimes they appear in a physical dimension (Supernatural). Based on all the information, I have chosen to compare my thesis to these three movies: Insidious, The Gallows, & Poltergeist. As for the movie, Insidious, I plan to focus on the ending with the father, Josh. As a child Josh was haunted by an old woman that would only show up in pictures. The older he got the closer the old woman got in the pictures. Until one...

Hamlet's Ghost/ Influencing Obsessions

...In Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet, the ghost of the late King Hamlet has influenced his son to become obsessed with the idea of death. When young Hamlet is informed of the ghost’s sighting, he is anxious and curious to find out who this ghost is and what news it has to deliver. After the ghost reveals himself as Hamlet’s deceased father, Hamlet’s curiosity increases. The ghost divulges to Hamlet that his brother, Claudius, poisoned him to take his life as well as his throne, which infuriates young Hamlet. After this shocking revelation, Hamlet becomes obsessed with thoughts of death and avenging his father’s murder, which contributes to his insanity. When Hamlet speaks to his father’s ghost, his father insists that Hamlet avenge his death by killing Claudius. The ghost explains to his son that King Claudius has corrupted the nation of Denmark, has robbed him of his own life, and therefore, achieving revenge is crucial. After conversing with the ghost, Hamlet vows to seek vengeance on Claudius. This “seeking” of vengeance very quickly turns into an obsession. Hamlet’s every thought seems to revolve around his plot to kill Claudius, causing friends and family to express concern over his strange behaviors. Rumors begin to travel around Denmark that Hamlet has “gone mad,” while Hamlet claims to only be feigning his insanity. Hamlet’s soliloquy where he contemplates suicide is one example of his obsession with death. Amidst the stresses of planning Claudius’ murder, Hamlet even considers...

"Hamlet's Ghost- to Believe or Not to Believe”

...Vickie Shipley Professor Marek ENC 1102, SEC 87 27 October, 2013 Drama Essay: "Hamlet's Ghost- To Believe or Not to Believe” Of all the plays written by William Shakespeare, Hamlet is the most intriguing. As the plot develops, themes such as indecision, deceit and revenge become apparent. As is expected, questions about the characters' motives arise as these themes are portrayed. Questions regarding Hamlet's love for Ophelia or his sanity arise. However, these questions develop throughout the story. The most important question arises at the beginning of the story in Act 1, and affects Hamlet’s every thought and action thereafter. Is the King's ghost a good spirit, merely seeking justice or an evil spirit sent to corrupt Hamlet? Perhaps the ghost is genuinely that of the dead king, but the fact that the ghost uses Hamlet to exact revenge and demands he commit the mortal sin of murder, clearly shows it to be an evil, malicious demon from hell. During the era in which Hamlet was written, there was a common belief of demonic intrusion, and corruption by the devil. Even today, it is not too difficult to find people who will agree that specters are evil demons, sent up from the bowels of hell to corrupt and destroy the living. In fact, a recent CBS poll reveals that almost half of all Americans believe in evil spirits, and that the dead can return in certain places and situations (Alfano). Because of this belief, the appearance of the spirit, along with the assumption of its...
