Owning and operating a small business that needs to expand to keep up with competition can be very hard and overwhelming. Albatross Anchor needs some major renovations done to their business including adding on to the existing building or even building a second building for finished products and storing of the raw materials. Yet it faces the fact that funds may not be available to do all of this. It is now time to make some decisions on how to accommodate the needs of their customers in the most economical and efficient way for them to continue to stay open and succeed beyond the competition.
Question One
Based on the information presented in the scenario/case study discuss Albatross Anchor’s competitiveness in relation to (please address all items in the below list and provide support for your conclusions):
1. Cost a) Cost of Production: Cost $8.00/lb for mushroom bells Cost 11.00/lb for snag hooks b) Economies of Scale in material purchasing: c) Cost of Raw Materials Sitting Idle in the Warehouse: d) Cost of Finished Goods Sitting Idle in the Warehouse:
2. Speed of manufacturing process from order to finished product.
Due to limited space, the manufacturing process is slow. There is a 36 hour delay when switching from making one anchor to another. There is not room to make both at the same time.
3. Flexibility in filling order(s)
4. Technology Albatross Anchors was established way before the new technology was available. Several upgrades in technology that would help Albatross accommodate orders has not been allowed due to other expenses that has taken priority. But over the years Albatross has been working on making changes one step at a time to make their company be able to compete against the competitor and do the same amount of work and keep the lower production costs so that their customers will continue to use them.

Investigating Secondary Dispersion Patterns of Indicator Minerals Using Gis

...Picturing the Subsurface With GIS: Data Visualization Techniques for Geophysical Images Using ArcGIS By Lucas Donny Setijadji Geoscientists try to understand the earth's crust using geophysical methods such as gravity and magnetic surveys. Mining geologists also use geophysics to search new mineral deposits. In areas such as the Nevada Great Basin, geoscientists rely more on geophysical images than on geologic maps. The Great Basin area holds one of the biggest mineral concentrations in the world. Economically, gold is the most prominent commodity. The most important gold deposits are hosted by carbonate rocks, called the Carlin-type and Carlin-like gold deposits. Carlin-type and Carlin-like gold deposits are unique geologically, are abundant in Nevada, and are hardly found elsewhere. Although much research has been done, a lot of the geology is still unclear. This paper discusses how ArcGIS provides a tool for research on mineral resources. Emphasis is on the functionality of ArcGIS to handle multiple data sets and maps as well as data visualization techniques using ArcGIS. Great Basin Geology Figure 1 shows the distribution of known gold deposits combined with topography, young geologic rocks, and county lines. Data sets were downloaded and compiled from several United States Geological Survey (USGS) Web sites (e.g., Raines et al., 1996). Data processing was done using ArcGIS 8.3 and its 3D Analyst extension. The Great Basin is complicated by its physiography...

...hazard categorization and risk assessment for Dhaka city in GIS framework Md. Jobair B. Alam and George N. Baroi1 Department of Civil Engineering Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Dhaka 1000, Bangladesh Received in final revised form 13 December 2003 Abstract Occurrence of fire incidences is a common phenomenon in Dhaka city, particularly in dry season. Fire break out in slums, garment factories and small manufacturing industries are regular news item during the season. Fire break outs cause loss of numerous lives and valuable properties in the city as well as other metropolitan areas of the country. With the increase of industrial establishments, mainly small industries, the number of fire incidences is increasing rapidly. Although there are a couple of fire stations in Dhaka City, an integrated framework of fire hazard management is non-existent. Such a framework, combined with information and communication system, has the potential to alleviate the damages and sufferings of the people. Also 'Fire hazard categorization' is vital for emergency planning in order to minimize loss of lives and property. Geocoded records of fire incidences and their characteristics help in understanding the spatial distribution of fire susceptibility and vulnerability as well as assist in the 'Allocation' and 'Mobilization' of dynamic resources. This paper presents an assessment of risk of fire hazards in Dhaka City in GIS framework in order to develop a methodology to generate...

Solar Energy Potential Assessment Using Gis

...Energy Education Science and Technology 2007 Volume(issue) 18(2): 101-114 Solar energy potential assessment using GIS T. V. Ramachandra Centre for Ecological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science Centre for Application of Science and Technology to Rural Areas (ASTRA), Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore 560 012, India Received 07 December 2006; accepted 15 December 2006 Abstract Renewable energy resources are those having a cycling time less than 100 years and are renewed by the nature and their supply exceeds the rate of consumption. Renewable energy systems use resources that are constantly replaced in nature and are usually less polluting. In order to tap the potential of renewable energy sources, there is a need to assess the availability of resources spatially as well as temporally. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) along with Remote Sensing (RS) helps in mapping on spatial and temporal scales of the resources and demand. The spatial database of resource availability and the demand would help in the regional energy planning. This paper discusses the application of geographical information system (GIS) to map the solar potential in Karnataka state, India. Regions suitable for tapping solar energy are mapped on the basis of global solar radiation data, and this analysis provides a picture of the potential. The study identifies that Coastal parts of Karnataka with the higher global solar radiation is ideally suited for harvesting solar energy. The potential analysis...

The service time can have a fixed component and a variable component that is demand dependent (time per unit). In most cases, each stop has a fixed service time that is independent of demand, variable service time that depends upon the demand at that stop. The amount of time it takes to service a stop is as follows: service time = (fixed time) * (number of units) *(time per unit). To Set Up Depots and Stops for Vehicle Routing 1. Choose...

All errors remain our own. energy_single_factor 1 Valuing Energy Options in a One Factor Model Clewlow and Strickland Valuing Energy Options in a One Factor Model Fitted to Forward Prices Les Clewlow and Chris Strickland Abstract In this paper we develop a single-factor modeling framework which is consistent with market observable forward prices and volatilities. The model is a special case of the multi-factor model developed in Clewlow and Strickland [1999b] and leads to analytical pricing formula for standard options, caps, floors, collars and swaptions. We also show how American style and exotic energy derivatives can be priced using trinomial trees, which are constructed to be consistent with the forward curve and volatility structure. We demonstrate the application of the trinomial tree to the pricing of a European and American Asian option. The analysis in this paper extends the results in Schwartz [1997] and Amin, et al. College Station, Texas, 77843-2124, U.S.A. b f a Professor, Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering, Room 127, Hobgood Building, Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, 77843, U.S.A. Abstract This paper analyzed the economic feasibility of a mobile bioenergy pyrolysis system using a Monte Carlo simulation model. Pyrolysis transforms any cellulosic materials into i) a bio-oil similar to crude oil ii) a synthesis gas similar to natural gas, and iii) a bio-charcoal substance. The pyrolyzer machine is currently being manufactured and tested with various types of feedstocks including corn stover and energy sorghum. The economic analysis focused on creating an automated process that integrates a transportation logistics cost optimization model with geographic information system (GIS) data. The geographic data provides possible paths for the mobile bioenergy pyrolysis unit as it moves to and from each harvest area, depending on stochastic availability of feedstock (determined by historical crop yields) and distance to oil refineries. The results indicated that there is a low probability of a positive Net Present Value (NPV) with current economic conditions. In general, the NPV was highest with a stationary scenario and it decreased with...

Parveen Kumar Goyal B.E.(Electricals), M.Tech.(Power Systems),Gurgaon, India E-mail: pkgoyal1983@gmail.com Abstract In the electrical power distribution and transmission system for urban and rural area, overhead lines are usually in major practice. Underground system was not favourable in developing and under developed countries. The main reason behind it was the much higher capital investment of underground cabling with respect to overhead bare conductors. But with the advancement in technology and market competition its cost is manageable for urban areas. This system requires more skills and planning for installation, jointing and termination rather than overhead lines. The presented paper is applied on power distribution system up to 33 KV. Keywords: LT/HT power cables, Installation, Jointing, Termination, Testing. 1. Introduction The fist step for the cabling system is selection of cable sizes. Voltage drop is the considerable factor for the selection of LT cables but in case of HT cable selection depend on short circuit current and current carrying capacity. After selection of cable there will be an inspection visit at manufacturing unit before dispatch. There will be numerous testing on cables to ensues the acceptibity as per electrical standards and site requirements...

...determining the best use for land is not always easy. Some land is best left to be cultivated because of its unique soil characteristics. Other land may be ideally suited for commercial development because it is located near a major highway. Other land, located near a railroad or airport, for example, may be prime land for an industrial park. Agricultural or open space uses may be the best for lands located in a flood plain. Zoning can be important in attracting business and industry to an area. Sufficient good land should be zoned for business and industry that is uniquely suited for business and industry and has adequate access and public facilities. INDUSTRIAL ZONING There are three types of Industrial-zoned properties: CI, LI AND GI. A simple comparison of these three zonings is impossible, however, because they all allow an extremely broad variety of uses and have significant overlaps in permitted uses between them. The following general observations may be useful: CI - Commercial Industrial. This district is intended for industrial, office and business uses of a moderate scale and intensity. CI appears to have the broadest mix of allowable uses, including factories...
