March 10, 2015 I refuse to be oppressed because of my sex. Females are strongly criticized on a daytoday basis. e are expected to look and act a certain way just to fit in with society’s version of ‘normal’ and beautiful. If we do not end up meeting those expectations, we become unwanted and excluded by others. That day, I did not want to feel like I had to meet the expectations that are given to woman.
Each culture has a specific guideline for woman, this doesn’t just happen to us, but it happens to men as well. Century after century, the perfect woman has been defined by different means. For instance, the way we perceive woman in the 21st century is different than how they did in the 18th century. During that time women were more voluptuous. They had curves and an attitude to match. In modern day America, most women are so insecure with their looks because ads, commercials, and people themselves give the impression that if you are not slim, then you are not wanted. This not only affects women physically but emotionally as well. This is how a lot of eating disorders come in to play such as: dieting and bulimia. Around 91% of women are unhappy with their body and let their imperfections take over, this is linked with selfesteem. Adolescents that are not taught to be confident and comfortable with themselves can lead to numerous activities that impact their lives forever such as: early sexual activity, abusing drugs and alcohol, suicidal thoughts and many other acts that could possibly put them at risk. I was in 8th grade that I became more self aware of how I carried myself and how I was put into that box that my body did not meet.
Walking through the halls of my middle school always gave me the chills. Not because
I was afraid of something, the energy and vibe of middle school is different than elementary of course. Standing 5 feet tall and being always on the petite side has it pros and cons. I have always been confident with who I am as a person and my body. I am extremely thankful for how my mother raised me; not to worry about what others have to say and to learn to love yourself first. I remember this day clear as glass. It was a nice day, there was a breeze but not unbearable, besides there being a ton of clouds it was like sitting on the beach in the middle of September. I was walking by myself to the lunch room, all I could smell was the overwhelming scent of pizza. when I stumbled upon a group of 7 guys. I knew the guys would check out the girls, and that everyone was obsessed with having the biggest butt. Being really tiny, I have never been blessed with the curves that other women are able to have. As I walked past the group of guys I heard them whispering to one another.
“You have no cakes,” shouted the first guy. Hearing these words at the time didn’t have much of an impact on me then, but over time it did. I turned back around to the group of guys and stared at them for a minute.
“Why are you looking then!” I yelled in retaliation. Complete silence was upon us. I stood up for myself and it felt good. It made me feel like I was in control.
“Why are you wearing shorts when you do not have an a**,” questioned the same guy.
“I am not wearing these for you darling,” I replied.
“ Well duh who would want you? You got no a**!” said the guy.
“Yeah you are totally right. But if you can get a girlfriend with your small pen*s then I can get a guy without my a**,” I responded.
I quickly walked into the nearest hallway, and had a ‘self reflection’ on the event that had just happened. I was more irritated and frustrated then a student who studied all night just to get told that they failed the test. I could overhear the guys making fun of his friend after what I had just said. I was happy that I got a chance to be who I was, to be Janessa. Anyone that knows me, knows I am notorious to speak my mind even if it isn’t in the best situation. This is not the only time these words have been thrown my way. A similar situation happened earlier my junior year and a more recent experience with my mom has happened a few days ago. This experience with my mother, let me knew that you should never push someone to the past the point of breaking. Never push someone to the point where they don’t care about what happens to them. But I’ve learned to block that out. Thats a standard that personally I am held up to by others. I have to be this happy and jumpy person that everyone knows. If I show one ounce of my sadness, people worry and I am one to give the advice and the shoulder to cry on not the other way around. The situation is something that happened that I still reflect on to this day. I have learned that in order to love ourselves, we must be happy on the inside. And that is that way I am. I like to promote happiness, because someone should never have to live a sad life. Overall, this experience has shaped me to become more of a confident person. If you aren’t comfortable in the body that you are in or accept it, then you will never learn to love another person. This society is really good at making women feel worthless because of the way that we look, and we allow guys to treat us that way. If we as women actually stood together and learned to put one another up rather than tear each others spirits down, maybe the men in our lives would have more respect for us, rather than treat us like garbage like they currently do. Guys have learned to support each other whether it has to do with women and them cheating or financial.
That is why we cannot have a female president because America is still stuck in that mentality that men are the superior sex.

Explain Why Boys And Girls Should Not Play On The Same Teams

...Boys and Girls should be allowed to play on the same team because it will help develop friendships. Many people say boys are stronger then girls but if we put our mind to it we can be just as good. Many hockey teams are girls and boys. There is no difference For example in football girls should not play. They will get hurt. Boys are used to that pain. Girls are not used to pain. That is why there are no girls playing in the nfl. Boys are really big. Girls are not as big as boys. Girls should not play basketball, baseball, soccer together either. One reason that I believe girls and boys should be on the same teams is because it would make for good competition. If the boy, for example, is better than the girl it would make the girl want to work...

Dating Comparison

...Sarah Crement 11/13/13 Compare and Contrast Dating Then Vs. Now I asked my mom the other day what dating was like when she was a teenager. I was shocked to find out that almost everything she told me was different than how dating is nowadays. From what she told me, dating seemed to be very traditional and what it still should be like. The point of dating was to find a husband or wife. But now it isn’t like that at all. There aren’t any teenagers that are looking to find someone to marry. There’s even kids in elementary school that are supposively “dating”. When it comes to a first date, my mom said when she was my age the guy would take her out to a fancy restaurant or a movie. The guy would ring the doorbell to get her and then have to speak to her parents first before they left. Sometimes on dates the guy would buy her flowers or a gift of some sort. And of course the guy would always pay for whatever they did. Now when it comes to dating, instead of going out somewhere nice, the girl is usually stuck at her date’s house. Doing nothing. Because the guy either doesn’t have money or doesn’t care about the girl enough to spend the money. Also, instead of being a gentlemen and coming to the door to get the girl, he would wait in his car and text her saying “here”. How most people met each other back then was through school, work, or maybe even parties. Meeting was always face-to-face because there was really no other way of doing it. But now I would say about 75% of...

Dating vs. Hanging Out

...Anna Richey Opinion Editorial Dating vs. Hanging Out I met a guy in my class the other day and after some small talk we finished with “lets hang out tonight.” That same night a friend of mine introduced me to someone and that person called me the next night and set up a date for that weekend. Obviously the second person was ready to take action and had the courage to ask me out. There is a difference between dating and hanging out and both girls and boys value dating. Dating and hanging out are two completely different things. Young Adults need to stop replacing dating with hanging out and bring back the value of dating. The way my brother, Daniel met his fiancé is a perfect example of Dating. Dan is 27 and had just gone through a bad break up with the girl he thought he was supposed to marry. He had met up for conference with his friends where they discussed all their plans and trips for the summer. In the April session of General Conference, they stressed to young single adults of the need to date, find their eternal companion, and get married. After listening to the counsel of the prophet his summer plans changed very quickly. He decided to attend every FHE, Young Single Adult Activity, Dance etc and ask out a couple girls a week. He took out one particular girl named Tiffany to Airborne Trampoline Center in Draper, Utah. He noticed the blonde cashier on his way out and started talking with her (his date wasn’t with him). The rest was history; they are getting married...

Different Forms in U.S.Schools

...5-2-2013 What different forms can segregation take in US schools? When we hear the word segregation the first thought that comes to mind is usually about color. In this case there are a lot of different forms of segregation. One of the different types of segregation are the classes that they offer for girls and boys. One of the classes for girls is the Child development class which consists of teaching students how to be babysitters, what to do in case of emergency, how to feed a baby, change them, and care for them. Boys say that they should be able to register for the class, but know they will be harassed by the girl students in the class if they are allowed. Another class which usually is only offered to the boys is workshop. This class consists of how to make different things like wood work boxes, mailboxes, carpentry, doing flooring work, and working outside. Girls say they do not want to be a part of a class like that it’s usually for the guys to handle that type of class. Although there were a few girls say they are interested in signing up for the class. The girl students that were interested said they did not want to be wanting for a guy to do something like that when they can do it themselves. There is a test that these students have to take to get in these classes because they can be transferred into college credits. When can these methods affirm diversity and when are they detrimental to learning? Consider economic segregation, culturally-based schools. These...

Social Media Influence

... You see, I was never one of those skinny girls who could wear “brand named” clothes. I have been fighting my way through life, emotionally and physically. There were many times that I blame myself for the way I am. There was many times where I just wanted to give up and shut myself out and forget about the world. I felt like I didn’t have what it takes to fit in with society. I sometimes ask myself, “Why does society want us to look a specific way?” People of all different sex/age are influence by print ads, fashion, and the media. It gives people the need to be someone they aren’t. People have dramatically changed their bodies and the way they look due to the media. They go from a normal body to something that looks totally impossible. Some people over exercise and some starve themselves. This includes girls being overly obsessed with how their bodies look like; having the idea that the right body is supposed to be skinny, boys having the need to build muscles, and how others look down upon those who looks different. Today, girls have the urge to be skinny because of the models being used to sell specific items from brand name clothing companies, such as Victoria Secret, Hollister, Areopostale, and more. The only way to get customers is to use attractive girls with big breast and “sexy” bodies to sell their items. For example, Victoria’s Secret is a place where people can purchase bras, panties, sleepwear, and cosmetics. These VS models are known as “Angels”. It makes society...

Guys vs Men

...Manhood and its Manliness vs Your Basic Guy It has been known guys have a different point of view than a girl, but do guys really have to go past the limit of certain things to get through it all? In Dave Barry’s essay he states many things saying guys like neat stuff and like taking on pointless challenges. His tone is also in a joking matter for his essay, meaning not everything he says is serious. It’s probably there for comedy relief. Many of the things he says may be true but this doesn’t account for every guy out there. Though it might have happen sometime in a guy’s life doesn’t really mean it’s every day in their life. In his essay he has it broken down into three sections stating guys like neat stuff, really pointless challenges and do not have a moral code of some sort. Guys liking neat things doesn’t really mean like something that is clean like he states. It’s more mechanical base for most guys but there are some guys fascinated by other things than just cars and technology. Some can be interested in art, food, read and much more. That is a bias thing that most people think that guys find neat. When coming to challenges guys don’t back down from one any matter how stupid or meaningless it is. They like to be first or like to prove they are better than others. Yes, there will be some guys out there doing pointless challenges that make no sense at all. Though there are some challenges out there that guys would take seriously and try their best to do well at. For...

Followed by quiet reaction – of bad guys, of the two in the car. ‘Have you done stuff like that before’, asks M (intertextual ref, but also motivated). Seven dead hackers so far, none of whom were on the FBI list of suspects. (Hackers used without knowing what they were involved in.) 4th of July weekend (fitting DH holiday template). Personal Narrative: Hochelaga-Maisonneuve

...and it’s thrilling. We arrived. I have to admit; I’m really surprised about the whole architecture and atmosphere of the neighbourhood. I start to question myself; maybe I am more of a Outremont, upper-middle-class girl that I like to admit. I was expecting something less appealing, and I’m forced to realize I had stereotypes about Hochelaga-Maisonneuve. We enter the side door of the church that leads to the basement. A small, fat man welcomes us. On his black shirt, “SECURITY” is written. Behind him, there’s a gigantic, nearly empty dark basement. The only thing in this huge space is in the very middle, and it’s a wrestling ring. The ring is lit by the only four lights of the basement, one over each corner of the ring. Around the ring, a few metal chair for the public. We sit. Right from the beginning, the men that were fighting captivate my eyes. As I’ve been told by the girl next to me, there is always a bad guy and a nice one. In this fight, the bad guy is called Eric Denis, as I’ve seen in the Facebook’s page of the event. Eric Denis is a tall, slim man with a long beard and very short hair. He is bare-chested and is wearing red pants with yellow flames drawn on it. On his chest, with was seems to be written with a sharpie, the word “Killer”. The good guy is called Big Fat Seb, which I can assume since the whole crowd is cheering his name. As one can guess from his name, he is indeed fat. He has tattoos all over his arms and neck. He is wearing a black shirt with a satanic...

Battle of the Sex's

...Aaron Schwartz Professional Communications Essay outline Prof. Kirshenbaum Farleigh Dickenson University Wednesdays 1:00-4:30 11/1/10 “Boys will be boy, girls will be girls” They say: “Boys will always be boys and girls will always be girls”. What does that even mean? Well our society has come to interpret this often said phrase to mean; little boys will always play with their guns while little girls will always play with their dolls. Teenage boys will always play with a football while teenage girls talk on the phone for hours. Men will always watch professional sports while women will still be talking on the phone for hours. Now is this just a stereotype or is this indeed a fact of life? Are guys truly more aggressive? Are women really more nurturing? You better believe it! Gender differences are real and they are simply more than just a serotype. “Boys will be boys” because their brain tells them to be, not because our society does. “Testosterone plays a huge role in aggression testosterone is the primary male sex hormone produced by the testicles. The male is said to produce forty to sixty times the testosterone then women. The University of Wisconsin did a study in which the researchers injected testosterone into unborn female monkeys. Once these females were born they did not nurture or groom their children they acted like male monkeys and began to become more violent and very aggressive.”(York) from that experiment we learn that once the testosterone...

Racial Inequality In Schools

...Over one hundred and fifty years ago Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery in the United States and granted the slaves their freedom. Although this was a successful event, it did not end the racism against African Americans that still occurs even in today’s educational system. During the twentieth century public schools for white and colored children were segregated but “equal”. In 1954, the Supreme Court held one of the biggest cases known as Brown vs. The Board of Education. This case proved that segregation of children in public schools violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. The Supreme Court made one of the biggest decisions that became known in the twentieth century to remove the Separate But Equal law that...
