Mexico or China, Managing a Global Network

...EXECUTIVE SUMMARY FOR MEXICO OR CHINA, MANAGING A GLOBAL NETWORK CASE Introduction – A US manufacturer of wireless transmission components sources its components from two assembly plants, one in China and another in Mexico. Sourcing the components from China is cheaper but has a lead time of 4 weeks whereas sourcing from Mexico is expensive with a lead time of 1 week. A Dual-sourcing strategy or a policy has to be developed for a wireless transmission component with a mean demand 40 units/period and standard deviation of 20 units/period. Analysis – The main trade-off involved in the sourcing mode decision is the one between the profit earned by the company in the end and the demand that is met toward the end. If there is sufficient inventory on-hand in the last period, although the demand can be easily met, the company would lose on the profits. However, if the inventory is less in the end, even though the demand may not be met due to a shortage, the loss incurred due to on-hand inventory would be comparatively less. Initially, the sourcing of the component shall be from China with the order quantity equal to the order up-to level arrived at using the lead time demand for 4 weeks. Thus, an order is placed to China to source 225 products. Following the order from China, nothing is sourced from either China or Mexico for the next 3 weeks. Post this, each week an order with a quantity equal to the demand in that particular week is placed to China. Meanwhile, nothing is sourced...

The Global Organization Learning and Development Network (Golden)

...In this study the multi-dimensional processes of organizational learning and change towards sustainability, the Global Organization Learning and Development Network (GOLDEN) research program will focus on the key functional aspects that characterize the activities of the firm, both line functions and staff functions, thus moving beyond the specialized functions often created to deal with sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) issues. One of the key conceptual contributions of the proposed program, therefore, consists of the development and testing of new theory and managerial wisdom about the development of new types of dynamic capabilities aimed at the adaptation of strategies, processes and culture to meet sustainability requirements. The key departure from the standard way of analyzing stakeholder engagement in prior research consists in viewing the role of stakeholders as primary facilitators of internal change processes aimed at sustainability, rather than solely as counterparts of externally oriented social development initiatives. Transnational Chapter 1

...TM-Chapter 1 (Motivations, Means and Mentalities) In this chapter, a number of important questions that companies must resolve before taking the leap to operate outside their home environment. 1. What market opportunities, sourcing advantages, or strategic imperatives provide the motivation for their international expansion? 2. By what means will they expand their overseas presence-through modes such as exports, licensing, joint ventures, wholly-owned subsidiaries, or some other means? 3. How will the management mentalities – their embedded attitudes, assumptions, and beliefs- that they bring to their international ventures affect their chances of success? Operating in an international rather than a domestic arena presents managers with many new opportunities. Having worldwide operations not only gives a company access to new markets and low-cost resources, it also opens up new sources of information and knowledge and broadens the options for strategic moves that the company might make to compete with its domestic and international rivals. However, with all these new opportunities come the challenges of managing strategy, organization, and operations that are innately more complex, diverse, and uncertain. What is multinational enterprise? * Multinational enterprise has substantial direct investment in foreign countries (Not just the trading relationships of an import-export business), and actively manage and regard those operations as integral parts of the company...

The word or notion of quality can be defined a number of ways. Some think quality should be determined by individual standards and expectations, while others believe quality is an ever changing state. Goetsch and Davis systematically broke down the elements of quality and determined that “quality is a dynamic state associated with products, services, people, processes, and environments that meets or exceeds expectations and helps produce superior value (Goetsch and Davis, 2010 p.5).” Whatever ones interpretation of quality might be, the intent of this paper is to more clearly define quality and its elements as well as describe how the quality pioneer's use of the total quality elements made the pioneers successful. Furthermore, this paper will explain why the elements of quality are useful in today’s environment and offer some insight as to what the future of quality might look like. Analysis of Global Production Networks Within Consumer Electronic Industry.

...Analysis of Global Production Networks within Consumer Electronic Industry. Introduction A diagnostic characteristic of contemporary globalization is that the component parts of the world economy are increasingly interconnected in qualitatively different ways from the past. Another way of saying this is that the world economy consists of tangled webs of production circuits and networks that cut through, and across, all geographical scales, including the bounded territory of the state. It is too simple to just define the global production networks, that involving a process of production, distribution and consumption of commodities, goods and services, as technical-economic mechanisms (Coe, Dicken and Hess, 2008). More than this oversimplified conceptual framework, Levy (2008) argues GPN as ‘simultaneously economic and political phenomena . . . organizational fields in which actors struggle over the construction of economic relationships, governance structures, institutional rules and norms, and discursive frames . . . GPNs thus exist within the ‘‘transnational space’’ that is constituted and structured by transnational elites, institutions, and ideologies’. In Levy’s theory, we can find out that more than a economic process of productions, GPNs is also a ‘social’ and ‘cultural’ phenomena in which the geographically differentiated political and social cultural circumstance are also shaped (Coe, Dicken and Hess, 2008). Considering the consumer electronic industry in particular...

Unit 8 Assignment 1

...IS3350 Unit 8 Assignment 1 To: Verizon Date: 2 February, 2014 Subject: Data Breach Executive Summary Overview Verizon’s 2013 Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR) provides truly global insights into the nature of data breaches that can help organizations of all sizes to better understand the threat and take the necessary steps to protect themselves. The breadth and depth of data represented in this year’s DBIR is unprecedented. It combines the efforts of 19 global organizations: law enforcement agencies, national incident-reporting entities, research institutions, and a number of private security firms — all working to study and combat data breaches. Analysis With 47,000+ Security incidents analyzed, 621 confirmed data breaches studied, and 19 international contributors, Verizon has ample amounts of data to compile and use to better their network. This data can also be analyzed to see what types of people are making these breaches and what motives they may have for doing so. In the 2013 DBIR, 69% of breaches were spotted by an external party and 76% of the network intrusions were due too weak or stolen passwords. Some of the other factors that have been realized was that 75% of the attacks are opportunistic and 19% of attacks are some form of espionage. There is also much evidence that many of these breaches could be tied to organized crime and gathering financial information. On a very basic level, just looking at the history of organized crime, money has always...

Climate Change

...Climate Change and How the Media Portrays It The average educated person would define climate change as the average weather changing or global warming. It is patterns of temperature, precipitation, humidity, wind and seasons. Climate is what makes up all natural ecosystems and is what helps sustain these ecosystems. The climate change today is changing the world. It’s affecting the natural ecosystems negatively. This is because climate is tied to almost everything. The change in climate will change the way people, animals, and plants have to survive. For example, a change in the usual timing of rains or temperatures can affect when plants bloom, when certain bugs hatch, or when streams are at their highest level. This can affect pollination of crops, food for migrating birds, spawning of fish, water supplies for drinking, forest health, and much more. Many people mistake global warming and climate change to be the same thing. Although they are very similar, global warming is what causes climate change. Global warming is the rising of global temperature and ocean temperature. This is what causes the climate change events listed above. Global warming is a global event while climate change is a more regional change in the atmosphere. There are many people who think climate change is not happening. The National Academy of Science has studied climate change and confirmed that it is real and humans are causing it. According to the Climate Impacts Group at the University...
