At the beginning business was great; the company had multiple branches to provide a local presence as well as meeting licensing requirements during the baby boom housing era. After awhile though business slowed down drastically, at one point in the 1980’s the company cut staff down to the three remaining partners being Drew, Sheila Sperry, and John MacLennan. During these slow times two employees stayed working unpaid for several months with faith that the company and its partners would rebound. Then in 1983 Sperry won a major turning point, the competition for the aquatics facility for the Canada games in Saint John. With the planning and design work for the aquatic facility the business turned around. Unlike earlier though the company new tough times are always around the corner. With their company being a staple in Canada for complexes and no real competition they new they would need more business than just the few complexes a year. The paper provides a synthesis of the existing global sourcing literature by dividing this growing body of research into three major themes: globalization processes and stages, motives/drivers, and organizational design and management. Moreover, the paper integrates the global sourcing literature with the established literature on the internationalization process of firms. Comparing the existing research on global sourcing and internationalization, we propose two research questions focused on: (1) the ways in which the IKEA global sourcing and supply chain development process resembles a linear stages process, and (2) the principal drivers of the development of global sourcing within IKEA. Relating the findings of the global sourcing process in the case of IKEA, the paper...

Global Market Research Case Study Analysis

...Global Market Research Case Study Analysis The situation discussed in the case tells of an opportunity afforded Sperry/MacLennan Architects and Planners; the Canadian company was founded in 1972 as a one-man architectural practice and years since then they have become a very respected and profitable company in the field of architecture. It has been recorded in text that Aaker, Kumar & Day (2007) stated, “Eight market niches were identified for Canadian architects in the United States, one of which was educational facilities, in particular post-secondary institutions. This niche, identified as most likely to match S/M’s capabilities, is controlled by state governments and private organizations. Mitch Brooks, a junior partner in the firm, has plans to identify and evaluate other possible markets for S/M’s services as part of his October presentation to the board. Other parts of the United States, or the affluent countries of Europe, where recreational facilities are regularly patronized and design is taken seriously, might provide a better export market, given S/M’s string of design successes at home and the international recognition afforded by the Amherst facility design award.” (Chapter 3). Fortunately for S/M, things began to take a turn in the right direction when their persistence and faith was rewarded in 1983. Sperry won the competition for the aquatics facility for the Canada Games in Saint John. Sperry had gained renowned nationwide acknowledgment for its sports facility...

Quality Pioneers

...Total Quality Pioneers Paper xxxxxxxx Quality Management and Productivity MGT/449 xxxxxx xxx Introduction People are confronted with scenarios concerning quality nearly every day. The word or notion of quality can be defined a number of ways. Some think quality should be determined by individual standards and expectations, while others believe quality is an ever changing state. Goetsch and Davis systematically broke down the elements of quality and determined that “quality is a dynamic state associated with products, services, people, processes, and environments that meets or exceeds expectations and helps produce superior value (Goetsch and Davis, 2010 p.5).” Whatever ones interpretation of quality might be, the intent of this paper is to more clearly define quality and its elements as well as describe how the quality pioneer's use of the total quality elements made the pioneers successful. Furthermore, this paper will explain why the elements of quality are useful in today’s environment and offer some insight as to what the future of quality might look like. Transnational Chapter 1

...TM-Chapter 1 (Motivations, Means and Mentalities) In this chapter, a number of important questions that companies must resolve before taking the leap to operate outside their home environment. 1. What market opportunities, sourcing advantages, or strategic imperatives provide the motivation for their international expansion? 2. By what means will they expand their overseas presence-through modes such as exports, licensing, joint ventures, wholly-owned subsidiaries, or some other means? 3. How will the management mentalities – their embedded attitudes, assumptions, and beliefs- that they bring to their international ventures affect their chances of success? Operating in an international rather than a domestic arena presents managers with many new opportunities. Having worldwide operations not only gives a company access to new markets and low-cost resources, it also opens up new sources of information and knowledge and broadens the options for strategic moves that the company might make to compete with its domestic and international rivals. However, with all these new opportunities come the challenges of managing strategy, organization, and operations that are innately more complex, diverse, and uncertain. What is multinational enterprise? * Multinational enterprise has substantial direct investment in foreign countries (Not just the trading relationships of an import-export business), and actively manage and regard those operations as integral parts of the company...
