Gm 591: Leadership and Organizational Behavior

...GM 591: Leadership and Organizational Behavior Project Proposal Overview of Organization My final project paper will focus on the company SuperMedia LLC, (SuperMedia) which is a publically traded company headquartered in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. According to its corporate website, "SuperMedia serves as the advertising agency for small to medium sized businesses with a variety of advertising solutions". The solutions fall into three categories which include online advertising, direct mail and the yellow pages. With advertising solutions becoming more digitized and cost effective, SuperMedia (formally Idearc Media) found itself in a position where it had to quickly adapt to the new ways in which business were advertising. Unfortunately, this meant the company had to cut corners in the process without much due diligence and eventually lead to creating a sales environment that resulted in a reduction in sales and a high turnover of personnel in the sales department. As a sales representative within the company I have seen how sales managers within the department have taken a "win at all cost" attitude when dealing with members on their sales team. I have seen the practices of how deals were passed on to some members of the team who were already close to achieving sales quotas while others suffered - eventually losing their jobs - because they had not met their monthly quotas enough to stay with the company. Preliminary Problem Statement SuperMedia was late...

Gm 591: Leadership and Organizational Behavior Project Proposal

...GM 591: Leadership and Organizational Behavior Project Proposal Overview My research paper will be focusing on course objective C which discusses the different theories of motivation and how to demonstrate their application to successfully guide employees toward accomplishing organizational objectives. The different motivational theories that I will be discussing and applying throughout the paper are categorized under the Needs Theories of Motivation which include the Hierarchy of Needs Theory, the ERG theory, the Acquired Needs Theory, the Two-factor Theory, and the Equity theory of Motivation. I will thoroughly explain each one and try to provide examples of how to apply these theories in work settings. In my paper I would also like to research the most sought after companies that are rated for employee satisfaction or in other words the best companies to work for. Two of the top companies that are listed under CNN Money are SAS and GOOGLE. SAS which originally stands for Statistical Analysis System is, "the leader in business analytics software and services, and the largest independent vendor in the business intelligence market (SAS.com)." GOOGLE of course is one of the most widely known and used search engines all over the country if not the world. I will briefly give a description of each company and then discuss the reasons behind them being some of the best companies to work at. I would like to research and see what are some of the innovative ways in which these...

Case Study Week 3 (Gm 591 Leadership and Organizational Behavior)

...Case Study week 3 GM 591 Leadership and Organizational Behavior March 18, 2012 When becoming a team there are several stages that the team must go through and must go through them in order. Forming is the first stage then storming, norming, performing, and then adojourning is the last stage. Christines group has already done the forming, storming stages. At this point I think they are in the norming and the performing stages. They are in the norming stage because this is where the members really start to come together as a unit. In this case they have never really completed this task to begin with. Mike seemed that he didn’t really take the team seriously from the beginning and was not really following what the team leader wanted for the team to make sure things were done. With that problem they really could not get past this stage. If Christine would have understood the stages more then she would have realized that she was going to have a problem when she was in the forming stage. In the forming stage the team members must ask themselves “What can this group offer me?” and “Can my needs be meet?” among other questions. They should be asking these questions when they were getting to know each other in this stage. If these needs were not going to be meet it should have been addressed here before moving forward with the stages. The primary problem that Christine has is that the project is due in a week and has not received Mike’s portion of his work. If they do not get...

I was also responsible for resolving customer service issues with furniture and appliances, as well as ensuring the quality of all merchandise sold. I also had to set up sales displays, hand out sale flyers, make sure all prices were available and visible to customers, I would also go on deliveries to ensure proper delivery and customers are satisfied with the service that was provided to them thus far. Though I worked at Aaron’s for such short period of time I really enjoyed the experience. The major problem that I encountered was the employee’s ability to communicate effectively with one another and customers. Page 2 GM 591: Leadership and Organizational Behavior Course Project II. Leadership in Organziational Behavior

...“There and Back Again - A Falling Giant’s Tale” MGMT-591 Leadership in Organizational Behavior 20 April 2013 There and Back Again – A Falling Giant’s Tale General Motors Corporation (GM) was once a king in the auto industry. Founded in 1897, the small company grew from the fledgling Buick Motor Company to a huge corporation with over twenty different major brands of automobiles to include Chevrolet, Pontiac, GMC, Opel, and Cadillac to name a few. The main factory and office is headquartered in the United States and based out of Detroit, MI. The automobile manufacturing company is broken down into four different segments: GM North America, GM South America, GM Europe, and GM International Operations. Life was good being a part of the GM team and the company flourished into a giant in the auto industry. In 2009, GM faced several growing problems that they could not overcome. As a result, the corporation became involved in one of the country’s biggest and most controversial bankruptcies. GM was facing total shutdown if help was not received. In a move to prevent the loss of thousands of jobs and a very serious blow to the United States already declining economy, the United States Department of Treasury bailed GM out of bankruptcy and acquired all GM assets and liabilities. The freshly formed company emerged as the new General Motors Company (vice General Motors Corporation) and was kept in business. A new head was appointed to the board of directors who...

...GM 591: Leadership and Organizational Behavior Project Proposal Overview of Organization The organization that I selected for my final project paper is AT&T. AT&T Inc. is headquartered in Dallas, Texas and is the largest provider of fixed telephony in the United States and also a provider of broadband and subscription television services. Some of the products and services they specifically provide consist of: U-Verse (home phone, internet, and cable TV), wireless phone service and digital carriers (T1, T3, and OC48). Like many other telecommunication companies, AT&T decided to downsize and on December 4, 2008, AT&T announced they would be cutting 12,000 jobs due to "economic pressures, a changing business mix and a more streamlined organizational structure. Many locations and departments were shut-down and thousands of people were laid off as a result of this. Many people believe that AT&T have fallen victim to corporate greed and could care less about their employees and customers. Back in the 1980’s, before they were broken up by the United States v. AT&T antitrust suit, they were known as a family-oriented company. They used to have company picnics, flexible work hours, great paid benefits and excellent customer service. Nowadays, some employees are forced to work 10 hour shifts (6 days a week), work all holidays and are responsible for paying for their own benefits. There are not many incentives, employees are treated unfairly even though...

...GM 591: Leadership and Organizational Behavior Case Study The Forgotten Member Group Development The stage I believe the group is at is the “Storming Stage”. The reason I picked this stage is because from reading the case study it seem as if the team was in conflict with one of the members Mike. In the textbook on page 168 it tells us that the storming stage is where high emotions and tension among the group members happens. Also, this is the stage members’ different attitude starts to develop on the team and from the case study reading you could see that Mike was the trouble maker and could not or would not make any of the meetings. Understanding the stages of group development would have assisted Christine in many ways such as she would have been able to talk with Mike before the problem escalated to the team as a whole. For example in the case study it stated that Mike would send Christine his brief notes for her to discuss at group meetings. Christine should have told Mike he needs to be at the meeting because that what was expected of him as team member and that she would not read any notes. To me this would have made Mike feel he had to show up so he does not let the team down. Also, she would have been organized by knowing the stages and she would keep the team moving in the right direction. For example in the first meeting Christine would have known to let everyone know what was expected of them and stop the actions of...

Leadership & Organizational Behavior

...GM 591: Leadership and Organizational Behavior Project Proposal Overview of Organization The organization that will be the topic of discussion in my final project paper is the Labor Union Movement within the workplace and United States as a whole. The Labor Union Movement formation was made in the mid – 19th Century. From its birth in Wisconsin, it has empowered working people to overcome their struggles, be successful and provided hopes for a better future for themselves and their families. Due to the fluctuation of membership and the institution of different union movements, a merger came about forming the AFL (American Federation of Labor) – CIO (Congress of Industrial Organization). This collective effort provided a strong collective bargaining tool for workers in defending their workers’ rights and protection against unfair practices by employers. With the down-turn in the economy, these collective bargaining rights are rapidly disappearing. As a liaison for unionized workers within an organization, I’ve witnessed a breakdown in employees’ overall morale due, in part, to the lingering fear of losing their jobs. Workers ability is being leveraged by organizations and still produces the same level of production. Preliminary Problem Statement This poses a problem within the Labor movement and a lack of insecurity in the workforce. This country was built on strong union. I strongly believe that, without any union, there will be no vibrant middle class. Job-cutting...

...1 Week 3 Case Study The Forgotten Group Member Janail Richard-Brown 8565 W Sam Houston PKWY S Houston, Texas 770?? Jrich_26@yahoo.com 713-988-1038 GM 591 Leadership Organizational Behavior Kim Nugent January 23, 2012 Group Development As of right now, the group is somewhere between norming and performing-this stage is actually called storming. My reason for using the two stages is that one group member is still not performing up to standard (Mike). I find that this has occurred and been encountered quite often in my experience at DeVry. Most members will be onboard and one will just do the lease amount of work necessary to pacify other members. Christine having and understanding of the stages of group development would better suit her in two ways. First she would be aware of how the group is functioning and the dynamics of a group activity. Then secondly, she would see that Mike was not falling under any of the developmental practices in the stages. Also, I think it would give her a better idea on how to obtain Mike’s full efforts on the assignment. Problem Identification Christine is first facing the lack of participation by one of the group’s members. Secondly the group is at a critical point because the assignment is nearing a close. Christine needs to understand how to motivate each member to be the best at giving a total effort to the assignment. People are a very delicate lot. She needs to have each member perform at a high standard and at the same time...

Life Style Inventory

...GM591: Leadership and Organizational Behavior LIFE STYLES INVENTORY When proceeding with this life style survey, I was convinced that my “primary” style and/or my “back up” style will be far transparent from being Conventional and Oppositional. Moreover, in reviewing more in depth towards the final results, some of the outcomes are not exactly what I was expecting. In areas I thought should have resulted in a superlative score it barely met expectation in my scheme of things. Conventional-oriented has been revealed to be my “primary” style as the scoring was in the 98 percentile. I am by far not a manager that sees rules as more important than ideas. In fact, I do have a conservative behavior; however, it does not keep me away from trying new things. When working in a job I have always set goals and guidelines to be successful at my job skill. It has always persevered because I either was promoted at a rapid rate or acknowledgement went to me for an outstanding job. When working on a new job task that has been thrown my way, I get exhilarated from the new at all times. This describes more of an achievement-oriented “primary result” and what I was expecting at the end. At work, I am not seen as manager that will do things “by the book.” However, I am typically concerned with doing what is expected, but I am seeing as a manager that has high abilities to motivate subordinates to set goals and...
