Personal Responsibility

...better you is yourself and if you do not take action in your own life no one else will. To achieve a successful lifestyle, and reach goals, one must have personal responsibility to make this happen.  With a schedule and proper balance of time I can make my family proud and provide a better life for them by obtaining a degree and higher education. To me personal responsibility is making sure you are bettering yourself in any way possible and be self-driven enough to recognize an area of your life that needs attention and act on it. In the Marine Corps one value they believe in is their leadership trait “To know yourself and seek self-improvement” (Scott, 2007). Constantly self-evaluate and focus on yourself both good and bad. Then try to figure what areas of your life need some work and set some goals. Goal setting is a huge aspect of personal responsibility. If you do not set goals you will not have anything to strive for and without a deadline, no motivation to achieve it. You must have something to work toward but at the same time keep the goal realistic and timely. Goals do not have to be personal but professional or academic as well. If you allow goal setting in all three aspects of your life it will help you be more successful and an all-around better person. Going to college achieving success at is very important to me and my family to make the most of myself and make my family proud.   My college success is related to personal responsibility in a way that possessing...

Personal Responsibility Equalls Ultimate Success

...Personal Responsibility Equals Ultimate Success Personal responsibility to me is the freedom to choose what I am going to do and how I am going to do it. It is my responsibility to decide in what ways I want my life, career and schooling to flourish. No one can tell me what to do or how to do it; it is up to me to make that determination. There will be times when someone may put up a roadblock, however it is up to me to decide whether or not I am going to let that roadblock stop my success or not. If I am responsible in my day to day decision making and duties; work, school, and family, then I am certain I will be successful. “Personal responsibility is an obligation to oneself. It means putting a stop to blaming others and admitting and accepting that “I am responsible” ("About-Personal-Growth", 2005). In order to be successful in college I need to be aware of my personal responsibility. If I am responsible in my decisions, setting aside enough time for homework, staying on top of assignments, and contributing to my learning team, then I will be successful in completing my college education. I cannot expect to be successful if I am not responsible and do not manage my time wisely. I also cannot expect anyone to do it for me. It is up to me to be responsible and successful in college. ” A task may expand to fit the time available, time can never be expanded--no extra second will ever be slapped on, no additional hours squeezed in, Time management really means learning how...

Being in Control

...personal responsibility you must hold yourself accountable for your own actions, despite the consequences that come from those actions. You must understand that what you do impacts those around you, instead of blaming others for our mistakes and/or choices; we can accept responsibility for our own lives. In my opinion, personal responsibility is the key not only to college success, but in life as well. As an adult, I reflect back to the teachings of my childhood. I was taught not only personal responsibility, but also how to plan ahead, make conscious-ethical decisions, and manage my time wisely. One of the most important ways to accomplish success, whether it be college or personal, is managing time effectively. Once it is gone, there is no way to get more, there is no reset button and you cannot turn the clocks back. As a student and mother, I think about the endless possibilities of college success and make rational decisions to achieve my goals. The time and effort I contribute to my responsibilities and priorities will determine success. Therefore, I approach time and responsibilities as if I am in control. “Too many students are showing up on campus under-prepared for college; in fact, with scarcely any idea why they are there in the first place” (Long, J. 2010). Instead, most students are more overwhelmed with organizing their dorm rooms, pledging for a sorority or fraternity, and going to parties. For these students, college is a culture shock and it becomes more about...

Continuing Academic Success

...Curran and Reivich (2011) “How does goal setting increase performance, achievement, and ultimately well-being” (p. 44)? In my opinion, academic success should be included in one’s model for achieving one’s career goals. While some believe continuing academic success is not required to obtain one's ultimate career goal, academic success is achieved by setting goals, fusing one’s learning style with lessons being taught, applying critical thinking skills and utilizing all available resources. During this first course of continuing my education, I’ve learned the tools necessary to become academically successful as well starting on the path to a successful career. Goal Setting Setting goals, leads to success because there’s a plan being put into motion. According to Lock & Latham 2002, “Research indicates that when an individual sets a goal that individual shows increased direct physical effort, cognitive effort on repeated task, self-reported subjective effort, and physiological indicators of effort” (p.44). Choosing the online course to continue my education allows me to move at my own pace. Setting goals is directive; goals reveal the path in which I need to follow. All of these actions lead to positive outcomes. (Curran & Reivich 2011, Lock & Latham 2002, Locke & Bryan 1969). Smaller and easier to attain goals should be set; this will allow me to remain persistence and to see that progress is being made toward my career goal. According to (Curran & Reivich 2011...

...to become a teacher. Upon asking another teacher this question I got a quick response of June, July, and August. There has to be more to it than just summer vacation, right? Some of the other reasons people might give are such things like: they feel a calling to teach; a chance to positively impact the community; having a commitment to students; and being a good role model. But just what does all this mean to me and my pursuit to be an educator? Ultimately, I believe it will lead to a brighter future for me, and for my family. Let us take a little deeper look at some of the rewards of teaching. Everyone wants to be recognized for things they do in life, whether they are willing to admit it or not. I would love one day to have my name called out at an assembly to receive a certificate, plaque, or maybe even a banner, for being awarded Teacher of the Year. This would be a really great way to mark my accomplishments and distinguish myself among my colleagues. Teaching is not all about fame and recognition though. Knowing that I am doing a job that makes a difference, like teaching a child how to read and write, learn what respect is, and take responsibility for their actions will be meaningful. Those things alone are far more valuable than rewards of recognition or money. Another reason some might chose to become a teacher is they feel a calling or vocation towards education. Doctors, lawyers, politicians, and engineers. How did they all get to where they...
