Growing up in the Harlem and going to a St. Aloysius from first to eighth grade at the same school. Everyone thought i would of wanted to go to Rice, St. Raymond's, or Cardinal Hayes for high school. Instead I chose to go to a prep school, not because I was a bad kid or did not love my family. I knew that it would help me out in the future by being letting me practice being independent, my experience would be greater, and i could focus on my sports. But I can't forget going to school in the city and the experiences that i’ve had. These two experiences have made me who I am and still help me to this day. School in the city could be amazingly fun, surprisingly boring, or sometimes dangerous. Anything could happen at anytime as soon as I left my house. For me school started as soon as i left my house because I never knew what experience is on the …show more content…
Both we’re religious and had church services with the whole school attending. The teachers actually cared but they're all always those teachers who were out to get me in trouble. There was a study hall time and they were both two hours at both schools. They were both small schools and everyone knew everyone in every grade. They actually were both small that people knew before I knew or right after that I or someone else got in trouble. After a while this got very annoying to me.
I could go on for days about the differences About prep school and going to school in the city. The easiest one it is that I live at school instead of at home and actually have to fend for myself now. I could still call my mom to order me a pizza over the phone so it could be delivered to my dorm. I would much rather have a home-cooked meal from my mother. Even the people and how people act are much different. back at home a lot of people are intimidating of others. Just because of how they dress or how they talk. Where at prep school everybody is more

Reflective Essay: The Effects Of The Pollution In The Chesapeake Bay

... how to find scholarly, peer reviewed sources, and how to use the Boatwright library website. In public school I was not taught the importance of scholarly work nor how to find it. The only time I was assigned a major research project was in my senior year of high school. I went to one of the specialty schools in the Richmond Public Schools system. Two of the requirements for graduation was the freshman paper and the senior thesis. Looking back, I remember how hard I was struggling in completing my freshmen paper. It was about the effects of the pollution in the Chesapeake Bay. The 10 page paper required extensive research with 350 flashcards, 3 drafts, and a class trip to the Chesapeake Bay at the end of...

Experience as a Writer

...Experiences As A Writer My experience as a writer started in high school and is continuing at the present time while I’m in the Army. High school gave me my first real writing experience because I had to actually take the time to come with a thesis statement, write a rough draft, revise, redraft, and turn in a final draft of my paper. Not only did that have to occur you have to conduct research on your paper, site what you researched, and put it all together to make one coherent flow smooth paper. After High school I came straight into the Army as I was taught the Army writing style which means no long and drawn out writing but getting straight to the point. My experiences writing in the Army has to come from writing different types of memorandums, counseling statements, and Non-Commissioned Officers Evaluation Reports. As I progressed through the ranks in the military I had to attend many schools in which writing was a big part of passing the course. Now I am the Head supervisor in my section which means that I spend a lot of time behind a computer and in meetings planning out the unit’s missions. Now my next writing experience is coming from my classes from my instructors at Strayer University on a collegiate level. This is going to be more challenging for me since I haven’t written research papers in twelve years. All I am used to is writing short simple straight to the point memorandums and counseling statements. I am in store for some new learning material and...

...through these different stages right out of high school so I can relate and appreciate the data. This article was very easy to relate too and to understand how relationships can change you for worst or better, and the way that the data is delivered was straight forward and clear cut so I was able to interpret it clearly. The information that is given in this article was well researched and delivered, and being that this was a research paper it would give good starting points for where I should begin my own research. Although this paper was focused on a limited age range (early adulthood 18-20) it was extremely thorough in retrieving data and offers many areas where you could continue the research and look more into a specific relationship type. This paper covers the opposing affects that differing stages of relationships play on drug use, heavy drinking, and smoking, but this study only focuses on the transition between graduating high school and entering college and gives a small glimpse into what the roles play later in life. The most interesting piece of data that this article had was not only does being in a relationship gives the people a protective effect but the quality of the relationship can have the opposite effect on the people involved if the relationship is going poorly. Over this entire article was very informative and also relative in the since that I had experienced most of the stage study in the paper. While I was going through these stages I was not able to see...

Educational Exclusion In Schools

...Discipline. According to Dr. Joseph Kosciw, GLSEN’s Chief Research & Strategy Officer (2016), “It is abundantly clear that LGBTQ students face disproportionately high levels of school discipline due to hostile school climates that ultimately deprive many of them, not only of their education, but also the success in life that education affords. Given the findings of Educational Exclusion, we must redouble our efforts to create supportive schools for LGBTQ students, particularly transgender and gender nonconforming students, students experiencing homelessness, students with disabilities and students of color.” He added, “Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) students face high rates of school discipline, including detention, suspension...

The One

...downs. I've been able to write papers but I've always needed a little bit of help to complete them. My mom has always been there when I am having problems writing papers. There have been times where I am amazing at them and knock them out like nothing. These are papers are usually short stories or something I can relate to. Then theres times where nothing comes to me and it seems like it takes forever to write them. When writing the papers one of the difficulties came from what I was writing about. In high school papers stressed me out because I knew I was going to have trouble with them. When I had to write my paper for chemistry, I worried about the length, how many citation, and how to cite it. I ask myself how does confidence impact my ability to write? On the one hand the papers I have the most confidence writing and I favor the most are ones where we have to tell a made up story or about a life event. I can write these very easily because I can remember the event very vividly or can make up a story with lots of detail. With event stories I usually just remember then write and occasionally go back to reread and fill some parts with more detail. In high school one of the first papers I had to write in my English class about a life event that changed your life. I thought to myself this is really easy to write about. I had an idea and there was no length on the paper so I didn't have to worry about how long it was. I was ready for this paper. I had confidence and I knew inside...

Personal Narrative: My Writing

...myself. I have learned that writing is not as easy as I thought it was. Writing takes time and planning. To have a nice, well written paper, I have to take time to go though it a few times to check for mistakes and errors. The biggest challenge for me so far has been time management. I am in high school and I tend to remember homework for my physical classes better than this one. I also have a part-time job and volunteer two to three times a week. Both of these things tend to get in my way when...

Why Do We Need Preschools.

...The Benefits Of Having Children Attend Pre School Education Essay Abstract This report covers the benefit of sending children to pre-school before kindergarten. Literature review is used to explore the research existing in this field. It will help us to understand what effect pre-school has on children. Such programs are also discussed in the paper which is conducting training for preschoolers for their development. This paper not only covers that academic aspect but also sheds light on the benefits preschool education has on social and emotional aspects of children's life. After collecting this information, it will be collaborated with the findings of this research paper using different research technique. In the end, the paper will be concluded along with some suggestions. Introduction In this competitive world it is very important to train the children in such a way that they are not left behind. Study shows that with pre-school training, children show much developed skills of learning when they enter kindergarten. If a child is being read to at home, visits museums, learns how to play a game and reads along someone then it is more likely that his/her learning abilities are polished and ready for kindergarten (Stube & Patrick, 2010). Pre-school is a planned program for children before they start their formal education. It deals with the learning ability of a child. Children are trained in such a way that their learning abilities are enhanced. Specified techniques are...

Microfinance & Education

...& Education (A Research Study) Poverty, and the alleviation thereof, has been a discussion that has spanned centuries, specifically in the Unites States of America (USA). Now while those discussions have taken shape in various itineration’s (ie: political platforms, debates on entitlement structure, or simply encouraging individuals to help those less fortunate), everyone seems to agree that its ultimate remediation is beneficial to society; however, in terms of the actual path of forward, we open up a gambit of opinions and approaches. While the disagreement is real, we can take solace in the fact that there appears to be significant consensus on the actuals drivers that play a significant role in empowering the poor, being Capital, Knowledge, and Opportunity. In discussing poverty, it’s important to note that, contrary to common belief, poverty is an epidemic not specifically reserved for developing nations, and continues to be a major problem in the US. The below graph, derived from the US Census Bureau highlights the level of poverty, per race within the US in 2011. Some interesting observations include the incredibly high poverty rates among African American and Hispanics, and the obvious intra-race poverty disparity. Regardless of ones opinion on poverty and the mechanism to alleviate it, it’s worth noting that poverty possesses a heavy cost not only on its victims, but on society as a whole. There is significant statistical correlation between high poverty rates...

Immigration and Education

...In this paper, I want to focus on Immigrant Students in Secondary Schools. As a previous high school immigrant when I first arrived in United States, I have experience numerous difficulties in school that I would never forget. In addition, I believe immigrant students of secondary school can face major difficulties in learning English and succeeding in school. Since these students do not have a lot of time than elementary students to learn English, and they have to pass several test that require English skill such as the ACT and SAT. Above all, most secondary school texts and materials require a sufficient English reading ability to understand, which will even make learning experience becoming even tougher for high school immigrant. Before going into detail, lets take a look at the statistics of the United States’ immigration in the past few decades. According to U.S Bureau of the Census 1997a statistic, over a million immigrants, legal and illegal, entering the United States each year. And since the passage of the Immigration Act of 1965, which eliminated national origin quotas. Europe is no longer the main sources of newcomers to the United States but instead of Asia and Latin America. The largest groups come from Mexico, China, Cuba, and Vietnam. In the fall of 1997, 9 million (about one in five) elementary and secondary school students had a foreign born parents. With over 90% of recent immigrants coming from non English speaking countries, schools are increasingly...

Suicide and Its Demorgraphics

...Research Paper on Suicide People commit suicide everyday in the world. It is an ugly but truthful thing in the world as we know it today. Some people's situations put them in a more likely position to commit suicide. Many people commit suicide for many different reasons. A big reason people commit suicide is because of family problems. A person's family has a huge impact on an individual's life. Children that experience family problems such as their parents getting divorced are more likely to commit suicide. Children that get abused or neglected are also a lot more likely to take their own life. Most children that are put into these situations feel that they have no where to go for help. Most try to communicate their feelings to others but they don't get the necessary help needed. These children probably feel very confused and very alone at such a young age that they resort to suicide. Carol Watkins a M.D. states that "Social isolation" is a major factor for suicide (2). Some people also commit suicide because they want to rebel against their family. They do this because they don't want to deal with the authority of their family. Some feel that they would rather die than deal with that authority. __________________________________________________________ We Can Write Custom Research Papers on Suicide for You! __________________________________________________________ Problems with people's relationships can also be a reason that people commit suicide. Should you get that college degree that everyone has told you to strive for or, start working fresh out of high school. The real question is “is it worth it?” well, I can give you a simple answer. Premarital Sex Premarital Sex and Religion The Catholic Church teaches that premarital sex is wrong, yet it is still widely practiced around the world. The reason marriage was created was to join two people of the opposite sex together in a holy sacrament that would make the couple one. God's reason for marriage is quoted in the bible when he said, "For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh" . The Sacrament of marriage is one of the most sacred Sacraments in the Catholic Religion. By performing premarital sex, the couple is breaking a covenant with God and is performing a sin. Marriage is the joining of a couple in the eyes of God and in the eyes of the State. When two people are joined into marriage they become...

Its a Tech World After All

...Scott Impens EG 371 Project Part 6 Final White Paper This is a technological world. Text messaging has replaced the phone call; Skype and Face time have taken the place of a face to face meeting. All of these things have changed the face of communication and business. It seems education is going in the same direction. More and more young adults and current professionals are taking distance education and continuing education classes over the internet. With the advances in technology, the internet, the use of laptops and tablets, has the virtual classroom taken place of the traditional one? Will online degrees be given the same respect as traditional ones? Through research we will find that more and more employers either are or will be giving equal respect towards online degrees. We also see that larger state universities are offering distance education degrees. They do this to help keep the cost of tuition down, making the opportunity greater for those to achieve a higher education. This will help relieve burdens of student loans growing into the hundreds of thousands depending on where you go to school. There is still a hurdle to conquer in this, and that is the high school student. When students are juniors and seniors in high school, they begin to anticipate where they will go to continue their education. Not only that, but this is going to be a very important piece of growing socially, learning how to take care of themselves, learn valuable responsibility...
