Golf and Yoga
Golf is no longer just a hobby. It is a sport that requires a properly functioning body along with a clear and peaceful mind. It was not that long ago that golfers came in all shapes and sizes and working out was in the back of their mind. Nowadays, each day a golfer does not spend in the gym or in the yoga studio, they are losing ground on their competitors. Amateurs are even finding that to have a more balanced and powerful swing, they must build the muscles that allow them to do so. Lifting heavy weights is not going to add distance and consistency however. A flexible and properly functioning body is built by adding yoga to a golfer's workout plan. Yoga builds the core muscles along with adding muscle endurance and a range of flexibility, which in turn leads to more consistent and powerful golf swings. Yoga also teaches you how to breathe and relax your body and mind, which on the golf course is an absolute must.
According to Michael Brantl (2014), a TPI Level 3 Fitness Instructor, "yoga creates natural improvements in functional flexibility." Brantl goes on to explain to explain how yoga improves various parameters of fitness, and how this in turn, helps your golf game. Yoga improves and increases muscular strength, muscular endurance, functional flexibility/mobility, balance, stability, cardiovascular endurance, and body composition. All of these must be working at their best to create a powerful and balanced golf swing. Golfers tend to have bad backs, hips, shoulders, etc, and yoga can help decrease pain and prevent further injury. The second article I found deals less with the physical side of yoga, and more on the mental approach. Yoga for
Golfers, by Baron Baptiste Kathleen Finn Mendola, talks about how "yoga practice can help you free the subconscious by focusing on your breath and observing

...conspicuous leisure are abundant on television. In what ways are leisure activities informed by social and economic class? Provide an example of a popular leisure activity. What assumptions can you make about the participants of the activity? Conspicuous leisure is just like conspicuous consumption, except it is defined for leisure activities, such as vacations or other activities. It can cost a lot of extra money to travel, especially to exotic places, as often advertised through television shows or commercials. The more money you have, the more you can spend it on an exotic vacation to the Bahamas, versus a small road-trip vacation to the next state over. Another example could be the sport of golf. A lot of country club, wealthy folks golf, and I know for a fact that golf clubs aren’t cheap....

...classes being female-based. When I walk past a group exercise studio my mind is filled with a mixture of curiosity as to why it’s filled with so many women, as well as dash of regret for having chosen boxing instead of Zumba. I can tell you that from my estimation the average Zumba participant certainly is softer and gentler than the guys (and gals) hanging around the boxing gym. I’ve decided that surely, in my next life, I’ll be a Zumba instructor and participant. But, I digress. So what is the deal with women and exercise? While many of us guys do some hanging out in a group, perhaps the golf course or maybe a martial arts studio, it seems that more of us are more loners when it comes to our daily exercise. Even when we do hang out together for such activities, we make them seem like a competition, be it pick-up basketball, sparring at the boxing gym, or city-wide sports leagues. Guys, on the golf course, how often do you play when there isn’t some wager per hole? I rest my case. Us guys play together, but we aren’t necessarily making friends, we’re competing. I coached boxing at the same...
