The Lost Tradition of Drill
General purpose: To discus why drill is important in 1st Marine Regiment.
Specific purpose: to inform my audience the three advantages of performing drill.
Central idea: the advantages that we can gain through close order drill.
Introduction: Throughout history drill has been used to conduct movements and overcome various obstacles in war. Alexander the Great was a very successful warrior in war through using formations and flanking movements to defeat the enemy. It has been shown how organized movements can be successfully employed during any circumstance. It can also be a useful tool to improve Marines leadership skills. Drill should be actively practiced throughout 1st Marine Regiment in order to make Marines highly successful, build professionalism, and effectively improve esprit de corps.

1. Implementing close order drill in a garrison environment can improve the successfulness of Marines leadership skills.
A. It is a tradition that Marines have not fully taken part of.
B. When conducting drill, Marines are put into a decision making roll and are obligated to lead a group which makes them build their leadership skills.
C. From the day a Marine steps on the yellow footprints in boot camp they begin to learn close order drill, which begins the root of becoming highly successful. Transition: Actively conducting drill within the 1st Marine Regiment will make Marines highly successful and build the overall professionalism of the Marines.

2. Close order drill is a tool that can be used by all Marines and transform them into refined, disciplined and professional warriors.
A. It makes a marine want to have responsibilities and take charge by being placed in a leadership position.
B. It is the root of all warriors’ success in professionalism and battle.
