Google Versus Microsoft

...Google VERSUS Microsoft Strayer University Dr. Wade Ferguson BUS518 March 10, 2012 Although, both Google and Microsoft corporations have search engines in their portfolios, the core business for each is different and the diversity of their holdings, services and products really does not allow for a direct comparison of their actual offerings, but instead the financial statements, recent annual reports, and most importantly the financial ratios gleaned from these reports will help to identify which is more able to withstand the economic downturn and would be a more stable and profitable investment. Like so many of the dot.com companies, Google’s creation was conceptualized by computer science technicians. Larry Page and Sergey Brin met in 1995 while attending Stanford. They developed a search engine that was utilized by Stanford only, which they called Backrub. In 1997, Craig Silverstein joined the company, the company name was changed to Google and the search engine was released to the public. Google’s main core business is still its search engine used for internet browsing by individuals as well as businesses. In addition to the search engine, Google relies on its applications and advertisements to generate revenue. Googlemaps was created in 2005 and there are a wide variety of products and services including Android, its mobile platform, g-mail, Google earth, and Google venture. In 1975 Microsoft was developed by Paul Allen and a 19 year old, named Bill...

Google Versus Microsoft: Clash of the Technology Titans

...GOOGLE VERSUS MICROSOFT: CLASH OF THE TECHNOLOGY TITANS The growth and advancement in technology has continued to create competitions among its users. This case study between Google and Microsoft, two of the most prominent companies clearly illustrates this fact. The struggle continues to increase and fierce too as each day passes by. While Google has dominated the internet, Microsoft has dominated the desktop. Comparing the business strategies and business models of Google and Microsoft, one can clearly see the sharp dichotomy and why this conflict will shape our technological future. “Google began as one Search Company among many. But the effectiveness of its PageRank search algorithm and online advertising services, along with its ability to attract the best and brightest minds in the industry, have catapulted Google to global prominence. The company’s extensive infrastructure allows them to offer the fastest search speeds and a variety of Web-based products” (cf Lauderion MIS Pg 253). Google simply put has pioneered cloud computing. Microsoft on other hand, through its Windows operating system and office desktop productivity applications which are used by millions of people has achieved unimaginable success. Basically, Google is a multinational public cloud computing, internet search and advertising technologies corporation. Google hosts and develops a number of internet-based service and product, and generates profits primarily from advertising through its Ad Words...

Information Management Systems Case Study 4

...Case Study from Chapter 7: Apple, Google, and Microsoft Battle for your Internet Experience Business 5460, Management Information Systems March 30, 2014 Dr. Mical Ramim Provide a one page summary identifying major issues The battle between global giants, Apple, Google and Microsoft, is a fight that has been occurring for many years now. All three companies have been hugely successful in different aspects of their industry. However, as our society’s technology continues to develop each company has had to make drastic changes to adapt to new and upcoming trends. As discussed in the case study, the perfect example of this necessary adaptation is a trending statistic that predicts a majority of users will begin browsing the internet on mobile devices versus the traditional PC. This probable trend has led to a lively battle of innovation as each company struggles to be number one in the consumer internet experience. Throughout this battle to the top each company has experienced their fair share of issues. Microsoft is perhaps one of the most famous and respected companies in the world. The corporation was founded April 4, 1975 by Bill Gates, an inventor known for creating one of the first user-friendly operating systems for personal computers. Over the decades the company has been a huge success, but not without its failures which often seem to be as of late. What once may have been an internet experience that was easily dominated by Microsoft technology is now saturated with...

Microsoft&Yahoo Integration

...Under the deal, Microsoft gets 12% of the revenue Yahoo generates from search ads that appear next to search results on its websites. Because the combined search-ad system was expected to face challenges initially, Microsoft guaranteed a certain level of revenue for every search query done on Yahoo's sites.  Jordan Rohan, an analyst at Stifel Nicholas & Co., estimated that Microsoft's revenue-per-search guarantee is worth about $12 million to $15 million per quarter. The deal terms between Microsoft and Yahoo mean that the partnership can only be called off if either Microsoft closes or sells Bing, or if Yahoo's revenue per search falls below 40 percent of Google's. * The deal is the next step in the 10-year Microsoft Bing and Yahoo search merger, which was announced in July 2009. Under the plan, Microsoft’s Bing search engine will power Yahoo Search and its ad sales. Microsoft will get 12 percent of revenue from Yahoo searches. In August, the two companies announced that Bing was now powering Yahoo Search. “This will provide advertisers with the benefit of a combined marketplace through a single platform, creating a competitive alternative in search,” said David Pann, general manager of the Microsoft Advertising Search Network. “Rather than managing campaigns on Bing and Yahoo! Separately, advertisers can now reach the combined audience of both search engines by managing a single account, saving time and simplifying campaign management.” But in all honesty...

Microsoft Has Suddenly Gotten Serious with Mobile

...Microsoft Has Suddenly Gotten Serious with Mobile The Article’s overview Microsoft is showing that it wants to meet mobile users where they are, not where the company hopes they will be one day. Instead of using the strategy of pushing the mobile operation system in customer’s smartphones, Microsoft turned outside the company to bolster its mobile app offerings for Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android operating system. The reason for changing the strategy is that the company has figured out that Window’s mobile operating system dominates only three percent of the market share of mobile phone, while Android occupies the largest for 85% and iOS, the second, is at 11%. Initially, Microsoft attempted to compete with Apple and Google by buying the Nokia Company to put its own mobile operating system on the market as Windows Phone. Also, Microsoft did not make its software available for any competitors. However, this strategy never hurt any rivals, only Microsoft itself. With disappointing results, Microsoft has shifted its strategy and developed more applications and services and has brought them to Apple’s and Android’s devices. Early last year, Microsoft released the mobile version of Office 365 applications as well as OneDrive. They work well with other cloud storage apps such as Dropbox, Google Drive, or iCloud. Outlook is the latest application that was released in late January 2015. It is the email and calendar application for the heavy email users. Outlook is...

Apple, Google and Microsoft

...business models and areas of strength of Apple, Google, and Microsoft. Answer Apple:  It has the basis of creating a very strong hardware base for the internet future and thus logically they play their role in this battle by laying emphasis on the hardware that facilitates mobile computing. Apple has gone into the stance that applications, one of the major earners for tablet and phone manufacturers, should be device restricted. For example, one application should be unique to the brand of the device and should be allowed to function in another device from another separate brand. They even stopped Google in its plans to allow Google applications to work on Apple products. Thus by doing this Apple is trying to capitalize on their loyal customer base and create a Apple weds Apple scenario. Google: Google is the believer in the concept that in the future the devices used to run the applications and other internet options should be a fraction of what they are being charged now and instead the revenues generated should be from the in-app advertisements. Google even bought AdMob, an application advertisements development company, to work on such a concept. This future, Google and Microsoft have tried their hand at going hardware friendly but they still do not put the same emphasis on the hardware as Apple. Microsoft: Microsoft has laid its bet on the operating system on which the mobile computing devices shall run. Microsoft also has announced plans to develop the hardware...

Men and Women Are so Different When Shopping

...Different when Shopping M. Vanessa Millan INFO 103: Computer Literacy I Shane Lauber July 16, 2012 Searching for information on Google is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Is that true? Was the library of the 19th century more efficient? Explain. I will disagree on the fact that searching for information on Google is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. I will sustain my disagreement, because if you know how to type the proper sentence of what we are looking for it will simplify the search. We must know exactly what kind of information we are looking for. We must empathize in which direction our search is going to. Also we must learn how to identify a valid and legitimate web site, by following the security criteria of the important elements which leads us into a secure web site. This secure rules like verifying the author’s biography, if the web site is supported by any government organizations, etc. The Library of 19th century was less efficient in fact of time saver, and accuracy of information, but I believe turns the new student generation into lazy brains. This new generation doesn’t know about reading books, looking for information by alphabetic order. The 2000 generation only knows about Google, Bing and search. How is searching in specific database, such as Ashford’s library, different from searching in Bing, Google, or Yahoo? First of all, Ashford’s University is a property database, (is the data base accessible only to someone who pays for...
