Purpose of the Team: The Goonies set out on a quest to find One Eye Willie’s treasure in hopes of saving their neighborhood from being taken over by developers to build a golf course.

Physical Setting in which the group works: Underground cave filled with criminals, skeletons and booby traps - falling boulders, break-away-floors, deadly spike pits, perilous waterslides - set by One eye Willie to prevent anyone from finding his treasure.

Company size, nature of business, location, past history, and proposed future: The company size is seven teenagers. The Goonies consist of four preteenaged boys, all from working class families in Astoria, Oregon. Astoria is along the costal line of Oregon. The Goonies grew up together and did not want to see their neighborhood taken over by land developers to build a golf course. They were about to separate, but wanted to complete one last adventure in an effort to save their homes. This adventure was probably the most challenging thing they had ever done as they had to fight for their lives to survive.

Competitors, suppliers, and regulators: Goonies competitors are Chester Copperpot as he tried to get to the treasure before they did, One Eye Willie – he set the booby traps to prevent anyone from finding his treasure, the Fratellis- they were trying to get to One Eye Willy’s treasure before the Goonies did and the land developer – the goonies were competing for their neighborhood. The suppliers are Chester Copperpot – supplied the key to the main part of the cave and Mr. Walsh – supplied the map to treasure.

Legal System – The Fratellis was a crime family. The two brothers escaped from jail.

Social System - The team were working together and interacting with each other to accomplish a goal. They are learning lessons, problem solving and dealing with internal and external conflict.

Economic System - The Rich vs The Working Class. A corrupt corporate developer (Perkins Construction) is foreclosing on the homes in the Goondocks and plans to flatten all the homes to build a country club/golf course to cater to an upscale clientel. The families do not have the financial resouces to save their home.

Big Tall Goony Jimmy Sammy Analysis

...The longer her neck was, the more of her there was”. “Plaid” is the nickname he gives to one of Queenie’s friends who is seemingly plump and wearing a plaid two piece. He referred to this one as having “one of those chubby berry faces, the lips all bunched together under her nose”. The other girl who accompanied Queenie, was labelled “Big Tall Goony Goony” by Sammy and he stated that she “had a chin that was too long, you know, the kind of girl other girls think is very “striking” and “attractive” but never quite makes it, as they very well know, which is why they like her so much”. As the girl’s finish their shopping and find what they came for, they head the register to check out. Sammy is hopeful that they will end up at his checkout station and that’s exactly where they go. Upon their arrival to the register, they meet the owner of the store, Lengel, who does not make them feel welcome. He firmly states “This isn’t the beach” and “We want you decently dressed when you come in here”. Queenie immediately gets defensive and says “We are decent”. Lengel responds and says...

A&P by John Updike

...required to deal with real life situations, and learn how to handle their responsibilities. In the short story “A&P” by John Updike, Sammy the narrator, is a young immature nineteen-year-old that makes a drastic change to his life. His immaturity and wishing to do and say whatever he wants leads into consequences he must face. The short story, A&P, takes place in a small New England town’s A&P grocery store. A&P is in the center off the town, five miles down the beach. Sammy is a grocery cashier, who finds himself fascinated by three girls in swim suits. Chunky or plain girl, is the first girl that catches Sammy’s attention. She has a tan with lines behind her back legs were the sun never hits. There was this tall girl too. Big tall “Goony-Goony” with a chin that was too long. The third one was the leader or “Queenie”, the name that Sammy used, was the most beautiful of all three. The way she walked with her prima-donna long legs catch Sammy’s attention. As the girls go around shopping through the store, Sammy observes the reactions of other customers as they see this girls outfit. The girls, however appear to be unique in all aspects. Hate Crime

...not only the victim but the people around them and their communities. A growing trend not just in big cities but in small ones as well is hate crimes against homosexuals and lesbians. It is very often you read an article of racially motivated hate crimes but often crimes against some because of the sexual preference are not as public and it is mostly because of the topic itself. The article I chose to write about was related to a heinous crime against three people because of their sexual preference. The Collegiate Times wrote this article on October 13, 2010 about nine members of a notorious gang in New York who committed vicious acts against three men because of their sexual preference. The gang members belonged to the known Latin King Goonies gang primarily based out of the Bronx, New York. They had a male individual that was a possible recruit to the gang but later found out that he was homosexual. Once they found this information they lured him into an abandoned apartment and severely beat him and tortured him for hours. The same gang members then went outside and found a 30 year old man with his 17 year old boyfriend and took them back to the same apartment and brutally beat, cut, and committed severely other atrocious acts against these two innocent victims. The gang members then went to the older male’s brother’s house and robbed him and beat him as well. All these acts were committed just because the gang members had hate for homosexuals. This was no gang vengeance or...

Essay Rough Draft

...The Curious Mind of Walter Mitty Richard Gillette ENG:125 Introduction to Literature Instructor: Loretta Crosson April 28, 2014 The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is a quirky tale about a man that seemingly is growing bored with the same routine activities that occupy his daily life. In order for him to deal with his frustration, he frequently drifts off into a fantasy sometimes unbeknownst to his wife and sometimes he isn’t aware because he is simply going through the motions of doing the same thing he has every day for years. What makes this story captivating for me was the connection I was able to make personally with the main character, Walter Mitty. There have been numerous times throughout my life I found myself bored with the routine day to day actions and would drift off into a daydream imagining myself in a different era or setting acting out some alter-ego I manifested with my head. Right away the urgency as the Commander yelling commands to his Lieutenant as they are obviously in the heat of battle. Instantly I was drawn into Walter’s Dreamscape imagining the scenario unfolding with my imagination. Even though in that respect are some dramatic themes to set the tone of a more severe nature, we are promptly taken back to reality where he sees himself being called down for having yet another reoccurring fantasy by his seemingly nagging wife who has become rather tired of his lack of control when it comes to letting himself drift away. The vivid metaphors help let...

Auteur Theory

...The Cinematic Auteur Steven Spielberg Auteur Theory says that a director's film reflects the director's personal creative vision, as if they were the primary "auteur" (the French word for "author"). In spite of the production of the film as part of an industrial process, the auteur's creative voice is distinct enough to shine through all kinds of studio interference and through the collective process.” Steven Spielberg is now recognized as one of Hollywood’s leading auteurs; a filmmaker who expresses his identity over a body of films. Steven Spielberg, for instance, lends his touch to films he's associated with, whether it's as director OR producer, as with The Goonies Importance of auteur theory in film analysis and interpretation. Auteur theory is the process in which to critique films. “The theory gives enormous, almost total responsibility for a film’s success or failure (artistically, not at the box office) to the director” (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2011). According to film critic Andrew Sarris there are three rules to determine if a Director is an Auteurist. (1) Technical competence which refers to how well a movie is made; (2) Distinguishable Personality which refers to movies must have identifiable style and viewpoint; (3) Interior Meaning which refers to that the body of work should express coherent world stance. The features of being an auteur include; 1 having a recognizable style, 2   repeatedly returning to the same subject mater, 3   habitually address...

A&P by John Upike

...A&P by john updike In walks these three girls in nothing but bathing suits. I'm in the third check-out slot, with my back to the door, so I don't see them until they're over by the bread. The one that caught my eye first was the one in the plaid green two-piece. She was a chunky kid, with a good tan and a sweet broad soft-looking can with those two crescents of white just under it, where the sun never seems to hit, at the top of the backs of her legs. I stood there with my hand on a box of HiHo crackers trying to remember if I rang it up or not. I ring it up again and the customer starts giving me hell. She's one of these cash-register-watchers, a witch about fifty with rouge on her cheekbones and no eyebrows, and I knowit made her day to trip me up. She'd been watching cash registers forty years and probably never seen a mistake before. By the time I got her feathers smoothed and her goodies into a bag -- she gives me alittle snort in passing, if she'd been born at the right time they would have burned her over in Salem -- by the time I get her on her way the girls had circled around the bread and were coming back, without a pushcart, back my way along the counters, in the aisle between the check-outs and the Special bins. They didn't even have shoes on. There was this chunky one, with the two-piece -- it was bright green and the seams on the bra were still sharp and her belly was still pretty pale so I guessed she just got it (the suit) -- there was this one, with one of...

Hate Crime Analysis - Homosexuality

...Running Head: Hate Crime Analysis – Homosexuality Hate crime Analysis – Homosexuality CJA540 Nicole Paddock Eric Drennan October 18, 2010 Abstract Hate crimes are crimes that are motivated by prejudices. Hate crimes can be against people because of their race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. Incidents of hate crime can be physical assault, property damage, bullying, harassment, verbal abuse, graffiti, and/or hate mail. This paper will discuss hate crime has it pertains to sexual orientation focusing on homosexual men. It will provide a brief description of why homosexuals are victimized and discuss two cases of hate crime. The paper will then talk about the restorative justice models that could be used to help and the best instrument to measure the victimization of homosexual men. The paper will conclude with discussing the criminological theory that best describes why there is victimization with homosexual men. Homosexuality and victimization have become two things that unfortunately go hand in hand. Homosexual men are the prime targets for those who commit hate crimes. “Past studies show that gay men are more likely to be the victim of violent crime than lesbians. Gay men are often targeted out in public such as attending gay bars and nightclubs and in neighborhoods that are predominately occupied by gay men” (Waldern-Haugrud & Berg, p. 4 2004). One of the reasons homosexual men are targeted is because homosexual men tend to be more...

Analysis Of Jonathan Kozol's Still Separate Still Unequal

...backgrounds and educational experiences interacting with each other. Two English teachers who thought it would be beneficial if their students met. One group is from University Heights, a South Bronx public school, and the other group is from Fieldston, which is a private school . For the students of University Heights, the field trip to the private school was able to show them another world of not having to struggle for necessities. Chana Joffe asked Melanie, a student from University Heights, who determined and full of potential but has obstacles, such as family income that stand in her way, how she reacted going to Fieldston. She replies by saying, “When we went there, we looked like a bunch of hooligans. I would say we looked like the Goonies walking in a Wall Street building. I felt like you knew we weren't from there-- like, oh, who are these ghetto kids walking in? We knew we didn't fit in. We didn't look like the rest of the students. It was a very organized school”. The reason she freaked out was because there was so much missing from Melanie’s day to day life at her school, such as a library and the opportunity to take AP classes that she felt she did not belong in Fieldston and couldn’t be herself around them. She had very low sense of self worth and didn’t expect to succeed due to the environment she was brought up in. Once being at Fieldston, Melanie realized all that she did not have. It made her feel unimportant and she would never expect or consider to gain the fullest...

PREFACE Rationale We agreed to produce the instructor’s manual for the sixth edition of A First Look at Communication Theory because it’s a first-rate book and because we enjoy talking and writing about pedagogy. Yet when we recall the discussions we’ve had with colleagues about instructor’s manuals over the years, two unnerving comments stick with us: “I don’t find them much help”; and (even worse) “I never look at them.” And, if the truth be told, we were often the people making such points! With these statements in mind, we have done some serious soul-searching about the texts that so many teachers—ourselves...
