The Emergence of Different Sects of Christianity in the Late Second Century
Prior to the creation of the currently accepted standard form of Christianity, there was a time period of pivotal decision making in which many sects were fighting for authority. Just as Orthodox Christianity gained authority as containing “true” Christian teachings, opposing groups such as Gnosticism gained followers which posed threats to the stability of the Orthodox Church. The tumultuous and unstable background of the time period is reflected in the variety of religious scriptures at this time period. This is most clearly seen in the opposing views of Judas between the synoptic and gnostic gospels which portray very different accounts of the immediate events surrounding …show more content…
This made the credibility of the apostles as his successors and closest disciples even more important so that Christianity could continue to spread in his absence. This is because in order to convert more people, the message of the disciples needed to be trusted as an authentic source. However, the Gospel of Judas was particularly threatening and considered blasphemy because of the fact that it tainted the reputation of the disciples through dreams in which they are “commit[ing] a multitude of sins and deeds of lawlessness” and speaks of their inability to understand Jesus’ true teachings (Gospel of Judas 3). Gnostic gospels such as the Gospel of Judas posed a large threat to orthodox Christianity due to the fact that there were many different sects emerging after the death of Christ as seen in the vast expanse of scriptures in the Nag Hammadi Library of Christian origin (Frankfurter, 174). Considering that the Nag Hammadi library was reserved for hidden documents that were banned, Orthodox Christianity felt threatened by the Gospel of Judas to the point that it needed to destroy it. This reaction to early divisions of Christianity emerging in opposition to Orthodox teachings demonstrates the precarious situation of early Christianity and the growing opposition “between Gnosticism and the orthodox, patriarchal branch of the early Church between 2nd and 4th centuries C.E.”

...southeastern baptist theological seminary Richard Bauckham’s Jesus and the Eyewitnesses: The Gospels as Eyewitness Testimony (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 2006) makes a persuasive argument that the Gospels display eyewitness testimony and thus renews the quest for the identity of the Beloved Disciple as the author of the Fourth Gospel. While Bauckham attributes this Gospel to “the presbyter John” mentioned by Papias, the authors of this study show that the patristic evidence more likely seems to support the authorship of John the apostle and that the literary device of inclusio in the Fourth Gospel, astutely observed by Bauckham, also favors the authorship of John the son of Zebedee. Key Words: Fourth Gospel, Beloved Disciple, John, authorship, apostle, Zebedee, John the Elder, Papias, Eusebius, Muratorian Fragment, Polycrates, Irenaeus, Bauckham Introduction Recent years have witnessed a significant number of publications on the identity of “the disciple Jesus loved” in John’s Gospel. The ever more daring proposals have included identifications of this figure as diverse as the apostle Thomas, Mary Magdalene, Lazarus, James the son of Zebedee, and even the Samaritan woman, among others. 1 Most recently, Richard Bauckham has weighed in on this debate in his landmark volume Jesus and the 1. Eschatology

...APOCALYPSE (MARK 13 PAR): A DOCUMENT FROM THE TIME OF BAR KOCHBA Hermann Detering* he thirteenth chapter of the Gospel of Mark belongs to those texts of the New Testament which have been examined particularly often in recent times. Despite many differences in detail, a certain consensus is apparent between exegeses in so far as they all assume that the text in question, the so-called “Synoptic Apocalypse” (hereafter abbreviated as the SynApoc), arose either in the first or the second half of the first century. This investigation, however, will show that there are a number of factors which exclude such a dating and that numerous of clues indicate rather an origin in the time of the Bar Kochba uprising (132-135 CE). To be sure, the possibility of assigning such a date, which diverges considerably from what is usually taken for granted, does not even occure to most scholars, since the conclusion of their investigation is clearly determined by a prior methodological assumption: since the common assumption is that both Mark and Matthew were written in the second half of the first century, the SynApoc must also belong to this period or even precede it. In my opinion, however, for various reasons, it is highly questionable whether the customary and generally accepted dating of Mark's gospel around 70 CE is correct. Whoever concerns himself with the question of when the Synoptic Gospels arose quickly notices that he has hit upon a genuine weak point in the scholarly study of the New Testament...

The Secret Life of Satan

...WRITING ASSIGNMENT 1 1. To what did the Latin religio refer? a) The Latin word L. religionem (nom. Religio) is defined as “a respect for what is scared, reverence for the gods”, and according to the text refers to the fear or awe a person feels in the presence of a spirit or a god. 2. Taoism and Confucianism are nontheistic religions, that is, religions for which belief in God or gods is nonessential. While gods are not alien to either Taoism or Confucianism, belief in/of gods is not central to either tradition. What are a couple of other religions that can be called nontheistic religions? a) A few additional examples of some nontheistic religions are Agnosticism, Atheism, Buddhism, Secular Humanism and Scientology. 3. What is Paul Tillich's definition for religion, and why do Hopfe and Woodward consider its development too broad? a) Paul Tillich defines religion as, “that which is of ultimate concern”. Hopfe and Woodward consider the development of Tillich’s definition of religion too broad for a world religions course because a philosophical exploration of Tillich’s definition of religion, yields many an individuals personal belief of what is of ultimate concern hardly lending to the general understanding of popular or mainstream religions they hope to accomplish in this text. 4. Explain E. B. Tylor's theory concerning the origin and evolution of religion. What is animism, and to what, "ultimately" and "finally," did Tylor think it evolved? a) E.B. Tylor’s theory...

Quitters Inc. by Stephen King (published in Night Shift, 1978) Quitters Inc. Worksheet ©2008, T. Orman “Quitters Inc.” by Stephen King NOTE to TEACHER: This short story is appropriate for high school students (grades 10-12). It contains strong language that may not be appropriate for all students, so please use your own discretion. I use the movie “Cat’s Eye” as a companion to this story because the first story in the movie is based on “Quitters Inc.” Two differences: Dick Morrison’s son is a daughter in the movie (played by Drew Barrymore) and a cat is used for the “rabbit room.” We also read “The Contents of the Dead Man’s Pocket” by Jack Finney. If you choose to show the entire movie “Cat’s Eye,” the second story is called “The Ledge.” It is not similar in theme, but you could talk about the similarities as characters from both must go out on a ledge of a tall building. “The Ledge” story (from King’s Night Shift collection) does contain profanity/ language. This document includes: • Vocabulary crossword for Quitters Inc. • Additional vocabulary exercises (can be used before, after, or during reading) • Vocabulary definitions organizer • Pre-reading anticipatory questions • Content comprehension questions • Post-reading...

Music Appreciation

...and familiarity, variety sustains our interest and appeals to our need for, and enjoyment of, the new, different, and unexpected. To illustrate the relevance of these concepts, listen to how they are used in a piece of music by George Frideric Handel, a very famous musician who lived between the 17th and 18th centuries and whose music remains popular to this day. George Frideric Handel See Here the Conqu'ring Hero Comes George Frideric Handel Born: 1685 Died: 1759 Period: Baroque (1600-1750) Country: Germany/England See Here the Conqu'ring Hero Comes is one of Handel's most popular pieces. Three minutes and three seconds (3:03) long, it is a movement within a longer composition entitled Judas Maccabaeus written for an ensemble (group) of musicians. If you think of Judas Maccabaeus as a book, then See Here the Conq'ring Hero Comes acts as a chapter in that book. A movement may be enjoyed by itself; however, like a chapter in a book, it also fits into the structure of a larger composition. While you listen to this piece, ask yourself questions such as: what do you hear in this selection? In what way does this piece demonstrate unity and variety? Does listening to this music have any emotional or physical effect on you? Musical Ideas Now that you have listened to the entire piece, let's look at the structure of the work broken down into smaller sections. In this movement, there are two main...

Supernatural by Brother Branham

...Supernatural: The Life of William Branham Book 6: The Prophet and His Revelation 1960 – 1965 by Owen Jorgensen 1 Acknowledgments: In a project of this magnitude, it is understandable that I should owe many people a debt of gratitude for their help. First of all I want to thank Pearry Green for his vision, his encouragement and his efforts in publishing and distributing these books. I also want to thank Saundra Miles, David Buckley, Jay Weber, and the other people who spent many hours editing and proof reading the six manuscripts in this series. Their suggestions helped to make this a better book and a more accurate account of William Branham‘s life. Also, I want to thank Steven and Kathy Strooh, who put these books into audio format for all those people who would rather listen than read. I must certainly thank those people who have translated these books into their native languages: Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Russian, Norwegian, Hindi, and many other languages. Supernatural: the Life of William Branham took me 17 years to complete. I was 34 when I started and 51 when I finished. To put that into perspective, my four children were in grade school when I began writing this biography. By the time I finished, three of my children were married and I had nine grandchildren. During the 17 years I worked on this project, my life had its ups and downs. I want to thank everyone who prayed for me during those 17 years. Finally I want to thank my four children—Benaiah...
