GRADUATE CAREER DEVELOPMENT IN FACEBOOK

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to analyse the issue of substandard employee retention rates in Facebook, one of the leading companies in the IT industry, identify the reasons behind it and suggest concrete steps for bettering the situation through an improved Graduate Career Development Plan. The analysis reveals that the main two issues plaguing the company’s young graduates are excessive competitiveness and lack of challenge and development opportunities. Short-term countermeasures include creating a better, more efficient working environment, on personal, managerial and corporate levels alike, as well as ways of instantly increasing immediate motivation levels. The long-term plan suggests restructuring certain key elements of HR management, such as the workplace atmosphere, relations between employees and the management, the company’s organisation on the whole and the objectives set in front of the employees. The scope of the changes is broad and requires substantial resources, but the evaluation methods put in place ensure that a return on investment is achieved when the project is completed and the company restructured.

How to Sell Yourself in Unilever

...Before you start writing your application for Unilever, you’ll need to have done this essential preparation: * Checked Unilever’s application timetable * Researched Unilever’s internships and graduate schemes * Reviewed Unilever’s graduate competencies Key thing to remember if you want a graduate job at Unilever: Unilever’s graduate programme is specifically designed to train graduates as managers, the idea being that they will be ready to take on a management role after two years. If your career goals don’t include management, then this may not be the scheme for you. If you’re sure the scheme is right for you, it’s important to keep this in mind throughout the application process. Make sure you learn Unilever’s key competencies (tellingly called ‘standards of leadership’) and take every opportunity to demonstrate your leadership potential in your application form and at interview. Answering questions on Unilever’s graduate application form Each competency and motivation question on Unilever’s graduate application form must be answered within a maximum of 250 words. For each of the questions, Unilever helpfully provides a list of additional questions you should address in your answer. ...Analyze the Home Depot case in the textbook and develop a response to the questions below: How would you describe the culture at Home Depot? The culture at Home Depot was a culture set primarily by the founders, Mr. Marcus and Mr. Blank. It was a culture marked by an entrepreneurial high-spiritedness and a willingness to take risk, a passionate commitment to customers, colleagues, the company, and the community, and an aversion to anything that felt bureaucratic or hierarchical. All of this led to the company’s success. Discuss the impact of the cultural change and the reaction of the employee. When the founders of Home Depot left and the new CEO Mr. Nardelli came along, employees found it hard adjusting. They felt an outsider would “GE-ize their company and culture.” The changes Nardelli brought about was dealing with immediate problems that weren’t readily apparent, shortage of experienced store & district managers as well as the challenge from Lowes, poor inventory turns, low margins, and weak cash flows. Nardelli laid out new strategies from the store, the centralized leverage buying power, reevaluation was done on store operations, detailed data transparent environment, store layout and employee training. Although Nardelli’s changes left some managers and employees resistant, and many of the top executive team left, some did see merit in his approach. Over time, attitudes slowly began to change. Nardelli’s changes and new strategies transformed Home Depot...
