Graduation Speech: A Letter To David Platt's 'Radical'

Thank you for sharing your copy of Radical by David Platt. I may have read it before, but I'm reading it again. It's funny how books effect you differently as you mature in your faith.

I know that you time is important to you, so I thought I would put my thoughts into words in the hopes that they might be fewer. :) Some of what I say will be a repeat of what I've already mentioned, but I thought it might be nice to have it all in one place.

1. Jay and I are not leaving FBC due to conflict. We come to ReNew free of baggage or hurt feelings. While I'll admit there are some selfish reasons mixed in, we are primarily looking for a church that will:

A. Teach us to be followers of Christ. In the military they like to use the phrase, "See one, do one, teach one." It's how we learn our trade—a task is demonstrated to us, we try it ourselves, and then we teach someone else. You teach a biblical principle, we'll apply it to our lives, and then demonstrate it to our children.

Help us discern the truth. On multiple occasions I've asked FBC pastors questions with apologetic or theological significance and either gotten weak answers or been told not to concern myself with theology and to focus on the Word. I wasn't challenging them, only asking for clarification about things I had read or studied on my own. {Between Us} One example stemmed from a discussion I had with Jay over purgatory. Jay and I were raised Catholic (Jay will tell you he is Catholic and will always be Catholic. More on this later) During our talk, I asked Jay whether he thought his father was saved. With tear-filled eyes, he told me he didn't know. Later, I question my pastor about "once saved, always saved."
