GTA V For millions of gamers across the world, few dates hold as much significance as September 17th, 2013. On that day, hordes of eager Grand Theft Auto fans lined up outside of Gamestops everywhere, anxious to get their hands on Rockstar Games's highly anticipated latest addition to the saga: Grand Theft Auto V. Those fans were not disappointed. It is widely hailed as one of the best games ever released for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, and is probably responsible for more than one late research paper. This is due to its nearly flawless mechanics, gripping storylines, gorgeous graphics, and enormous open world. Until a couple weeks ago, I'd never played any game in the Grand Theft Auto series. This is largely because Grand Theft Auto IV was released when I was thirteen years old, and my parents thought that was just a bit too young to be exposed to car-jackings and rampant hooker-killing. However, for the sake of research and comparison, two weeks ago I played my Steam copy of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which comes right before GTA IV. Now, I don't know what GTA IV's mechanics and physics are like, but San Andreas's are very buggy and wooden-looking. Murdered gangsters flop around like rag dolls and do that weird restless-leg-syndrome-type wiggling that really just shouldn't be continued postmortem. Your car or bike might spontaneously disappear, leaving you to either trudge to your destination on foot or drag some poor schmuck out of his own vehicle. These anomalies are exceedingly rare in Grand Theft Auto V. Dead people stay dead, and your car either stays where you parked it or finds its way back to your garage. Granted, there are still some things developers can't really account for, such as your newly-acquired vehicle bursting into flames upon impact with a fire hydrant at the breakneck speed of fifteen miles an hour. I've yet to have that happen again (though definitely not for lack of trying), but I tend to look at those kinds of instances as comedic relief rather than bugs. Grand Theft Auto V introduces a new gameplay mechanic that hasn't been seen in any of the earlier games: the ability to switch between three different protagonists at your leisure. All three have their own unique storylines, as well as distinct personalities and motivations. Though their backgrounds are much more in depth, in order to not give too much away, I can only reveal this: Franklin is a young man who works for a snaky car dealer and gets in over his head, Michael is in the witness protection program and has anger management issues, and Trevor took part in a bank robbery and was falsely presumed dead nine years ago. The only quality they all share is the need and desire for more cash, which they intend to fulfill by pulling off several heists with huge payoffs. If you happen to get tired of one character's questline or personality (I found Michael and his bratty kids to be rather annoying), one press of a button lets you play one of the other two protagonists. If linear gameplay isn't really your style, you'll be pleased to know that you don't need to participate in the main storyline at all. The fictional city of Los Santos is comparable to London in size, and is positively filled with short mission chains, bars, strip clubs, shooting ranges, street races, and no shortage of hookers and crack addicts. You can do virtually anything. If you see a pretty car, just run into the middle of traffic, drag the unfortunate owner out and steal it. Attract enough attention, and suddenly the cops will be on your trail. Will you play it smart and hide out in an alley until you're off their radar? Or knock over countless signs and maybe even (definitely) people in your great 120-miles-per-hour escape? Will you die in a dramatic movie-worthy shootout with a rival gang? Or will you jump from the tallest building just to see what happens? The only con to speak of is that this game is not meant for all ages. Gangs, hookers, and crackheads might be material that's just a little too heavy for anyone who can't be legally considered an adult. Blood is shed profusely and often, and there's some pretty gratuitous nudity if you “happen” to find yourself in one of the strip clubs. There is absolutely no censorship, and naughty four-letter words make up half of the dialogue. Mature gamers will find that this adds to the immersion and realism of the game and its gritty environment, but parents beware: this game is not meant for your little ones. That being said, if you're old enough to be able to vote, Grand Theft Auto V is definitely worth your money. It's virtually impossible to be bored, and you can play however you want. Its graphics and depth create a stunning world with countless possibilities and hours of entertainment, most of which will be spent doing what every game should allow its audience to do: inflict chaos in hilarious and impossible ways while running from the authorities.

...The most recent video game release – Grand Theft Auto V – has proven to be an example of this consumer scenario. Video games cost a lot of money to develop and produce and in return, they are expensive to buy. However, the projected sales are almost six times the amount of marketing and developing costs in the first year. Not bad for a gaming system and its supporting technologies when they are close to obsolete in the gaming world. According to the article, “Rockstar Games (TTWO) reportedly spent $150 million on marketing – and the game is expected to make almost six times that much in sales over the course of the first year” (2). This goes to show that the consumers of this new game are not concerned with its shelf life. The consumers are drawn in by the successful marketing strategies the gaming companies use. Grand Theft Auto V is marketed through its advanced hardware that allows the gamer to play in a fictional yet realistic atmosphere. The gamers can take part in a fictional gaming world that replicates real life graphics – such as “convincing daylight.” The plausibility of these gaming systems make the success rate of them high throughout the constant change of processors in the industry. As discussed in chapter one of our text, the gaming industry practices sales orientation (5). The industry is constantly pushing new gaming systems such as the Xbox, Xbox360, various PlayStation systems, etc....

...The object of this focus will be the game “Grand Theft Auto V”. The game is described as an open world, action –adventure video game. The player may use various explosives and firearms to fight enemies including running over people with vehicles (Rockstar North, 2013). The first common sense claim is that the game “normalizes” violence. This means actually leading people to be more violent through desensitization. The second common sense claim is that the game’s depiction of women is misogynistic in nature. Therefore leading people to hate or dislike females through the game’s supposed misogynistic undertones. The game represents various females throughout the game as, strippers, prostitutes, typical “bimbos”, and long-suffering nagging housewives. Our responses to cultural and media influences vary greatly from person to person, and the conditions in which they are encoded in (O'Brien & Szeman, 2014, p. 94). This can lead to varied and different responses from individuals who view the same media or cultural phenomenon (O'Brien & Szeman, 2014, p. 94). With regards to violence in video games and media in general, how many consumers of these types of images and media are actually violent? Millions of people experience games and media like this every day, wouldn’t these millions have a cause to be more violent than a normal person?...

...The damages of Television and movies Television and movies have changed since I was born, it wasn’t that much like it is now where mostly all of the movies and television shows have sex and violence in a lot of scenes. If you were to ask someone what they thought about the movie sin city many would say that it had a lot of violence and sex. When I was younger I went to go see that I was about to turn 15 and wow that movie had a lot of stuff in it. I believe they should have more strict rules about children and teenagers seeing those kinds of movies and television shows. Today many children and teenagers are allowed to see movies that are rated R as long as their parents or guardian are present. Honestly that should not be allowed period. There are many things children shouldn’t see and two of those things are sex and violence. If their raised in a bad environment and their allowed to see stuff like that that could in fact affect them in the long run. There have been many people I know influenced by movies that become very bad people doing all types of wrongs. Now in today’s generation television shows aren’t as bad as the movies but some if not most still have sex and violence and most of them. Now parents have a little more control now than they did back then due to the parental controls most cable companies provide. Though there are some people who just don’t care about what their children watch. Many shows that I know would affect a child would be the......

A Sociological Look Into Gaming

...However, despite the similarities, the difference between the two is a simple one; the Boardwalk Empire is a lauded TV drama, while the release of Grand Theft Auto V has been shrouded in negative reactions from the media and parents alike. Although video games have become a societal norm, with 58% of the American population identifying as a member of the gaming community, they have also become a highly divisive social issue. This can be seen in the comparison of the coverage the game has received. The Toronto sun’s Tech Gaming columnist Steve Tilley covered the release with an article entitled “5 ways ‘Grand Theft Auto’ has changed videogames”. As a voice for the gamers, the article highlights everything about the game itself; the $265 million that was spent to develop the game, the five years it took, and the $6 billion it is projected to earn during the first six months. In contrast, CNN’s Doug Gross presented the same data, but followed the bare tech facts with an examination of the associated controversy and social problems that have come along with it. These two media outlets and their writers serve to show that while Boardwalk Empire has been gifted the golden ticket to be edgy without fault, the double standard whips back around to corner the video game industry for everything perceived to be wrong with society....

Sexism in the Video Game Industry

...Linzy Waltke Professor Andrew Forrester Discernment and Discourse 1313 5 May 2014 Sexism Sells: The Male Dominated Video Game Industry Only 4% of video game titles released in the past 10 years feature a playable female character as the leading role, and there are even fewer female protagonists on the list of the top grossing video games (ESA). This trend of male dominated storylines is evident in other forms of media as well: movies and television shows tend to be centered around men, but video games show the least diversity in protagonists and often have regressive views on women and their position in society. Women make up 20% of console video game players and 46% of computer and mobile game players in this 20 billion dollar a year industry, meaning they are contributing a large amount of profits (ESA). Despite their significant purchasing power, they are not represented equally as characters in games, and continue to be used as a plot device or sexual being to attract the male target audience. Neither are they allowed to be a compelling character with a story arc and personal growth as we see with the male protagonist. Female characters, when included, tend to be one dimensional and only valued for typically how they fit into traditional gender roles by being submissive and innocent. This narrow portrayal of women comes from the fact that the developers of video games are predominantly men. Only 11% of game designers are women and only 3% of programmers, even......

...Grand Theft Auto IV raked in $500 billion its first week on sale (USA Today, 2013). Grand Theft Auto is a series of video games in which the “fun” of the game is to kill, car-jack, and sleep with prostitutes while completing missions with story lines that involve drugs, violence, and gang activity. It has since been the object of controversy since the first game of series entitled Grand Theft Auto, released in 1997(Stout, 2013). One problem that exists in crime is the lack of known reported crimes due to inconsistent reporting. Many crimes go unreported due to fear of retribution from criminals and as well as concern of profiling past criminals and their creditably. Internal issues exist within the law enforcement, the consent question how serious is juvenile crime and is it just normal behavior issues or is it a sign of a future adult criminal. Once a minor has committed a crime, the argument of which punishments are appropriate for both the crime and the age of the offenders arises. Many court officials and society believe in rehabilitation over strict punishments, even more so in juvenile cases (Hagan, 2013). In...

Marketing Violence to Youth

...Vicious Video Games--------------------------- 7-8 V. Sadistic Music------------------------------------ 8-9 VI. Intense Internet----------------------------------- 9-10 VII. Conclusion---------------------------------------- 10 VIII. References---------------------------------------- 11 ii INTRODUCTION In the 21st century, youth seem to be overwhelmed by mass media. Everywhere that youth turn, there are magazines, movies, music, television, video games, and internet websites used to constantly promote and market violence. There is a distinct difference between the way that today’s youth are confronted with media, than what their parents or even their grandparents faced. Most children no longer go outside to play after finishing their homework, or take a walk to the local library to check out a book. To today’s youth, this type of entertainment is almost extinct. Instead, youth attention and time is grasped by some form of digital communication technology, such as an iPods, television, the internet, and video games. Marketing, advertising, and branding companies have spent thousands of hours and millions of dollars to target and capture and keep the interest and wallets of youth. In January 2001, America Online, the largest internet service provider, and Time Warner, the world’s biggest entertainment company, joined forces to what is now known as the largest media merger in history....

Applying the Sociological Perspective.

...Is GTA V the new ideal of life? Grand Theft Auto V is an open world action-adventure video game developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. The article by Keith Stuart, following the release of the new GTA video game suggests that, the mentality and state of life presented in the video game is representation of modern life. Its appeal is in its danger; a place where the kill-at-will, sexualized fantasy world of interactive entertainment is let loose in cities based on, real-world places. Being set in Los Santos the game provides violence, action and a close relationship to what many would think of as Los Angeles. Modern society has turned into Hollywood movie, these games have become an over dramatic representation of what people view as a ‘fun life’. From this article one could determine in the game the structure of society, how people are categorized into social class and the components that react within society that influence the structure. One could also determine where society stands in human history, and what varieties of people now prevail in society and in this period of time. These topics help sociologists discover how and why people interact with one another the way they do in a group setting. The article touches on how civilization in the game as a whole looks at life in a different way. Through-out GTA V the social structure is different in the game than that of our society....

Video Games: a Boon, Not a Plague

...Donald Ng Jer Yi English 110 R75 October 18, 2013 Video games: a boon, not a plague We all have that one day of the week where we just want to cut loose from the burden of work and assignments. This “free” day would be used to engage in leisure activities which would reduce stress such as playing video games. However, the video game industry has come under heavy fire from the mainstream media, whom claim that there is a direct link between video games and violence amongst gamers. Despite the numerous reports that claim it is directly related to violence, video games are beneficial because they enhance the cognitive flexibility and teach moral lessons. Video games are games that are played by electronically manipulating images produced by a computer program on a monitor or any other display. Video gaming has become increasingly popular because some people feel the need to “escape” from the harsh reality, and dive into their fantasy realm that is video games. Whether players take the role of the great detective they dream to be in “L.A. Noire” and bring criminals to justice, or a Dark Lord of the Sith and spread fear across the galaxy in “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic”, they indefinitely found their place and enthusiasm in video games. As a matter of fact, certain genres of video games are now played as a competitive sport; Counter-Strike (First Person Shooter), Starcraft (Real Time Strategy) and even the football simulated game of FIFA are now played......
