Grandmas House

...Grandma’s House My Grandmother’s house was a place that made me feel happy. It had many hiding places and I always found new fun things to do. Grandma’s house was like a home away from home. There was always good food to eat, lots of toys to play with and I could play dress up with grandma’s old clothes. I was the only child, so having something to do at my house was always a problem. At grandma’s house things never got old. There was never a dull moment in that house. The house was pretty old so it had a lot of hidden rooms and doors. Some of these doors lead to nowhere. I remember opening a door on the third floor that had just a brick wall behind it. I still wonder what that room use to be and why it was bricked up. Every time I found a new door id run to my grandma and ask her for a key to open it. She would smile and hand me a key ring full of keys and tell me I’d have to find which key it was. I would be there all day trying each key tell I opened the door. Rainy days where the best at grandma’s house. We would play games together. Grandma would hand me a sheet of paper and tell me to count all the windows and doors in the house. Each time I’d get a different number. I just don’t understand it! We would go out into the garden and I would name all the different bugs I saw. If I got to close to some of them I would get bitten but that never stopped me from going back the next day. Grandma’s house was always an adventure. I was always full and happy when I was...

Grandmas House

...Grandma’s house was always warm, and inviting. The night before mine and my cousin, Aja’s, cross country road trip, when I was about 9, we spent the night at our grandparent’s house. I remember like it was yesterday. We always slept in the living room, in front of the fireplace. The wall opposite of the fireplace was the kitchen, and dining room. Directly across the room from the fireplace, in the dining room, was the door to enter the garage, and in the garage was a room. The room in the garage was the hobby room, were we used to do crafts and make ceramics. When you entered the garage, straight ahead, you would see a screen door and the door into the hobby room. To the right was a door, that lead outside to the back yard, and once outside, to the left, was the gate to proceed to the front yard. All of us, including my grandparents, where gathered around the fireplace roasting marshmallow’s to make s’mores, and watching The Wizard of Oz. Around nine o’clock that evening was time for bed, Aja and I arranged thick mat’s on the floor, in front of the fireplace to form a large bed. We decided to stay up, after my grandparents went to bed to play some card games. After much debate, we decided to play a game of war in front of the roaring fire. Aja, won the first round, and I won the second round. We started playing gin rummy next; it was pretty fun and lasted quite some time. It was getting pretty late, and by now it was ten thirty. I threw some more wood on the fire, and...

...Riyadah gazed out of her bedroom window of her grand mother's little two-bedroom house and sighed as she closed her journal after penning a brief entry. Riyadah was a simple and pretty easy going young lady. She got her subtle ways from her grandmother Lisa Evens who'd spent most of her impressionable years with. As the aroma of fried bologna entered her old bedroom, she smiled at all the memories of her grandmother's fried bologna sandwiches. When she was younger and would visit or spend time with Grandma Lisa, bologna would be the only thing that she would eat. It would be her first request as soon as she walked through the front door, and Grandma Lisa would give it to her by the pounds. She would feed her bologna so much that her father would go and take it out of the fridge when he would drop her off. The vivid memory brought a smile to her lips. She sat up on the old twin bed and looked around at the pictures of her when she was a little girl that her grandmother kept up. The old home had so many memories. Riyadah was a full time employee of the Philadelphia Freedom School and she was also a part time student at Community College in her second year, on her way to Temple University through a dual enrollment program. She had her own apartment with a guy she dated since high school, but a terrible fallout over infidelity issues abut a week prior had brought her back to her grandmother's house to figure things out. Riyadah was always a deep thinker. Her ability to process and...

...interest the most, however. The first one was called Bust of a Woman. I did not see the title at first when I was writing down notes about this art piece but when I did I started asking myself, why did the artist Richard Henry Park title it this? It was a pure white statue made of an old fashioned woman. It only shows a little below her shoulders to her head. She is wearing what seems an old fashioned dress that flows and her hair is up in an old fashioned bun. It did not say how it was made but I’m guessing with clay of some sort. The whole statue seemed old fashioned and it was also created in 1875, which gave me a clue. I think he created it to show the beauty of a woman. The second art piece was a painting by Anna Mary Robertson Moses (“Grandma Moses”). It was a scenic painting and was so beautiful. The title is Out on the Lake. The painting was oil on masonite. I really liked this technique. It showed texture and lots of different colors that caught my eye. It also caught my interest because it reminded me of me on my lake up at my cabin. The painting made you feel like you were there in the boat with the person in the painting and just enjoying nature. It was created in 1945 and I think it was created the show the elegance, purity, and calmness of nature. Last but definitely not least, I observed an abstract art work titled Time Shapes the Stalactite by Nancy Graves. This piece was created in 1991. This art piece was my favorite because it was beyond interesting. The way the...

A Cry for Help

...IT AWAY FROM ME!” I looked immediately over to Fuzzy and we sprinted across the tree-lined trail to my grandmother’s home. We came upon her standing on a green plastic lawn chair with a large wooden shovel in her hand. “Grandma, what is wrong?” I shouted from afar. “It’s a snake! There is a snake in the flower bed!” she panted out frantically. Being the rebel I was, I strolled over there rolling my eyes at my grandmother’s silly sense of panic and began searching for the snake. If only I could go back in time and do what any regular kid would do when they sense panic in an authority figure. I would have sprinted the other direction in a heartbeat. I ran to the distress call of my grandmother only to find her weeping in the corner of the yard. “Heavenlee, listen to me, call the police,” she said with a quivering voice. This made me shudder just a little bit. My grandmother was a strapping almost six foot tall, broad shouldered, rugged to the bone woman. I had always looked up to her for her very presence was menacing. She was the embodiment of the word tough. So, to see her whimpering, then revert to a fetal position in the corner of her yard, on her lawn chair was unnerving to say the least. My morbid curiosity had gotten the best of me. “Okay Grandma!” It felt weird...

A Good Nights Sleep

...A Good Night’s Sleep It’s a short story written by Brian McCabe about a teacher called Lockhart, who lives on third floor of a tenement building in Edinburgh. He is an insomniac, which is sleeplessness, that’s one problem, but what makes the problem even worse is that his neighbors make a lot of noise, especially the old man from the apartment upstairs and the couple that lives next to him. One night he cannot fall asleep, because he as mentioned before is an insomniac, and then he hears something bumping softly against his door. He is lying, thinking about lots of stuff that night, for example is he thinking about the time where he was young and was going to parties and having fun, and then he’s having troubles figuring out a subject for the nxt mornings discussion with his class. Later that night he walked out to check what it was that was making the noise against his door, and found out that a homeless girl was sitting in his staircase. He talked with her, and asked her to sleep in his son’s bed, but she refused. Later that night came his neighbor couple home from a pub or something, and then they kicked her out of the staircase. Later Lockhart lay in his bed, and could not stop thinking about her, and then he suddenly heard the noise again and knew she was there. The story takes place in Lockharts apartment, and in the staircase outside his apartment in Edinburgh, late at night. Lockhart, the main character is an average man living a almost normal life. He has an apartment...

Moore Housing Contractors

... Moore Housing Contractors is negotiating a deal with Country Realtors to build six houses in a new development. Countryside wants Moore Contractors to start in late winter or early spring when the weather begins to moderate and build on through the summer into fall. The summer months are an especially busy time for the realty company, and it believes it can sell the houses almost as soon as they are ready, and sometimes even before. The houses all have similar floor plans and are of approximately equal size; only the exteriors are noticeable different. The completion time is so critical for Countryside Realtors that they are insisting that a project management network accompany the contractor’s bid for the job with an estimate of the completion time for a house. The realtor also needs to be able to plan its offerings and marketing for the summer. They want each house to be completed within 45 days after it is started. If a house is not completed within the time frame they want to be able to charge the contractor a penalty. Mary and Sandy Moore, the president and vice-president, respectively, of Moore Contractors, are concerned about the prospects of a penalty charge. They want to be very confident that they can meet the deadline for a house before they enter into any kind of agreement with a penalty involved. (If there is a reasonable likelihood that they cannot finish a house within a 45 days they want to increase their bid to cover potential penalty charges.) ...

Descriptive Essay: Hamilton Hotel

...Hamilton Hotel stands its ground in South Laredo, Downtown at an appalling twelve stories high. The hotels prominent location, stylistic beauty, and the community’s determination to keep it preserved uphold the building to a high degree of architectural and historical integrity. Taking a walk through downtown, towards the esteemed Hamilton hotel is as if taking a stroll through history. Right across from the hotel is a pharmacy and a neighboring building that are only a few years younger. On the front, right corner, lays the Jarvis plaza and on its left is the U.S. Post Office/ Court House edifice. The Hamilton hotel is situated smack in the middle of all these historical landmarks. The favorable route is through the Jarvis Plaza and the U.S. Post Office/Court House. It is two o’clock in the afternoon and the sun is out with no mercy, but the green-leafed, willowed trees surrounding the court house provide a sufficient amount of shade. There’s very little commotion. No yelling or running, only pedestrians sitting on benches and taking in the pretty view. At the end of the pathway, on its right, is a sign reminding everyone to cross only at the cross walks. On the left of the pathway, is a fire hydrant whose red paint is chipping off and is leaving an uncovered patchwork of yellow. More significant is the Hamilton hotel at the front of the path. The hotel features a Spanish Renaissance Revival...

Mental Health Experience

...Mental Health Experience Mental Health can be defined as a state of emotional and psychological well being in which an individual is able to use his or her cognitive and emotional capabilities, function in society and meet the ordinary demands of everyday life. (The American Heritage Dictionary. 2009) With that being said, as nurses, we work with many mental health patients. Working in home health has given me the opportunity to work closely in the home of some very “mental” patients. One in particular is M.M. She is a 62-year-old female that lives in a low-income apartment in Harriman, TN. She has been diagnosed with depression and schizophrenia. She attends Ridgeview outpatient clinic weekly and gets all of her medications thru them. The nurse at the outpatient clinic sets up her medications in zip lock bags for three times a day, dosage and labels each individually morning, noon and night and the dates as well. I was called in to perform lab work and to provide educational teaching regarding the medications and to monitor if the meds were being taken right. My first call to the patient was to introduce myself and inform her that I would be coming to visit her and what time I would be there. When I arrived at her apartment she was waiting for me in a chair outside of the building. She led me to her apartment and was fairly quite at first. Her apartment was small but very clean. She was very proud of her apartment and showed me around. I explained to her what I...

Home

...March 10 2014 Living in a house is far better than living in an apartment Living in a house opens up doors that are not available in an apartment. One advantage is the choice of people I have to interact with. When I lived in an apartment just to take the trash out I would have to put on shoulder pads and mow down 8 kids just to get there. As opposed to in my home I don’t have to leave if I choose not to. I am fully independent with all my amenities at my fingertips. Another perk is the space we have as opposed to in an apartment, I was forced to share a wall with someone so if I chose to have company or play my music there would be an overweight security guard knocking on my door hassling me to turn it down. By owning my own home now I sort of feel like my own boss in the sense that I am not regulated by the manager of an apartment. The only rules I have to abide by are my own. I also feel overall safer with my family, and the environment is much more peaceful to relax in. Where as in my apartment I felt if I wanted time outside it would take a pair of head phones and a blindfold to relax. I guess the best thing about a home is coming home at night and not having to to see a bunch of people who have their own agenda and could care less if I had a long day or that I just want to get ton my parking spot that has more than likely occupied by someone else while as in my house I pull in my garage and I’m done. Now don’t get me wrong I understand...

Applicable Housing in China

...Applicable Housing in China Abstract The paper is about the research of applicable housing in China. It explains the definition of the applicable housing. There are some data of the research and the main problems that this kind of house meet in China at present. I also will talk about my opinion about whether applicable housing should be continued and how to make the applicable housing really help the low-income families. Applicable Housing is very special in Chinese real estate transactions. It is a government policy that provides the low-income families a house in a low price so that everyone can live in their own house. It began in 1994. It means as the development of Chinese real estate economy, there are still some Chinese can’t buy houses even though more and more Chinese can afford to buy their own house. Wealth is not evenly distributed in China. As one online dictionary said, establishing the housing supply system mainly with the economical and applicable housing was fit for the market economy of socialist and current circumstance of China. The target of applicable housing is very good. But the fact is that it works not very well. Some real estate developers haven’t built and sold the building that meet the standards of Applicable Housing while they enjoy the treatment of this government policy. As the result, here comes many problems, such as the price is much higher, the buyer is not the poor and so on. Here are some data from the research about applicable...
