Grandparent parenting is a growing trend that seems to be more common than ever these days. Since it has become more common for us to see teen pregnancy, single parents, and troubled young people having children it has led to grandparents stepping in to fill the needs of these children who have parents that are not available to be parents. They suffer from the lack of parenting knowledge, or legal issues, or simply were not ready to give up their lives to care for their children. Their mentality was no where near ready to be a parent.
According to Grandparents Parenting Again website there are 2.4 million families that are maintained by grandparents who have their grandchildren living with them. There are effects to this parenting situation. First of all normally grandparents are viewed as ones who are there to love and spoil grandchildren, and suddenly they are in a role of parent and disciplinarian. This means that the child can miss out on traditional grandparenting from their grandparents. For the grandparents it can create a sense of resentment. It is not intended for a grandparent to feel that way. But there is a sense of freedom that they may have felt when their own children were raised and out on their own, which is now taken from them in place of becoming a parent once again later in life.
There is however a sense of heroism if the grandparent has stepped in to stop their grandchildren from being placed in the social services system. These grandparents have saved these children from uncertainty. These children would otherwise be either in a poor environment with parents that don't care well for them or thrown into "the system. There could be abuse issues or substance abuse problems that the parents of the children are going through. This is no situation for a child to have to live in. Grand Parents

...Grandparenting Grand parenting over the years has changed due to the life expectancy of adults. They are living longer and now you are more likely to have a living grandmother than a grandfather but both are still living longer. Another change is the amount of grandchildren you are likely to have. In the 1900s you averaged 12.1 grandchildren versus the 6 or fewer grand children you would have in the 1990s Also it is more likely in black and Hispanic households to be raising your children while also being a grandparent. Grandparents whose children moved to another country are no able to see their grandchildren but if you live in the same country you are more likely to see and interact with your grandparents. Another factor of grand parenting is at what age you become one the younger you are the more active you are in the lives of your grandchildren. My grandfathers are both deceased and I have no distinct memories of either in my life as a child but I do remember when my mother’s father was starting to have alzheimer and the day of his funeral. My grandmothers are 20 years apart in age and I saw my younger grandma more as a child and as an adult than my other grandma. I love them both the same but I have more memories with one over the other. The Strengths of Apache Grandmothers In the American way of life grandparents are important but if they do not want to take a very active role in the lives of their grandchildren they don’t have to. In the American Indian way of...

Childhood Development

...their surroundings and they are such things like parents, grandparents, smells, and sounds like someone’s voice. As they begin to grow from infancy to adolescence they begin to pick up traits from parents, siblings, or even their friends. Some of these can be bad habits or they can lead to success in a child’s life. Families can affect the development of infants and adolescence, and depending on the circumstances they can be good or bad. Many young girls/boy usually look up to their older sister or older brother. Many of those children can be influences on how on many of their life choices. Relationships can be a very great tool for children, when you show children love and you teach them compassion, love, and mercy, they will typically grow up showing those same traits. They should allow their children to socialize with other children, adolescence, and adults; as infants begin to age they understand and they will question the feelings of how other children act in school, such as bullies, and love interests (a school crush.) Children would like to know the feelings and the expectations of others and as parents in order to help with their children’s development it is important that you show them and teach them with love and affection. It is very important that they understand they difference of hate and love, and that they might be only four letter words however they are very powerful words. Parenting

...Xenia Burgara Marajan Hazrati English 103 January 29, 2013 Parenting Every parent has his own personal philosophy of child rearing. Many issues are controversial because there are supporting facts to both opinions. One major issue in today’s society is whether to breast or bottlefeed an infant. Another difficult issue is how to discipline a child. Some parents believe that spanking in certain situations is acceptable, and some view it as child abuse. Many parents believe religion is an essential part of growing into a moral person, and many do not. Family meals are important to some families, and unnecessary to others. Another big controversy is placing a child in daycare. Some couples believe it is completely wrong for the mother to work outside the home. Other couples say that without two incomes, they would not make it financially. When I had my child, I choose to breast feed her. I think it is very important to the infant’s health. Colostrum, the fluid that comes in before the real milk, allows the baby to receive immunity to many infections, and also enables the infant to gain necessary weight faster than bottle-fed infants. In breast milk, eight percent of the cells are macrophages. Macrophages are cells that kill bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Breastfeeding is much easier and more convenient, because it can be done at any time of the day, without preparation. With bottle feeding, there are bottles to wash, formula to mix, refrigeration to worry about, and warming...

How Children Should Be Raised

...Chinese mother has recently received a lot of critic on her new book, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, which is described as “how Chinese parents raise such stereotypically successful kids” (p. 2, l. 4). Though most people have criticized her mother’s raising technique, Sophia Chua thanks her mother for pushing her to do that extra limit. She says her mother’s “tough love” parenting methods actually has raised her to be an independent thinker who has lived her whole life at 110 percent. Mother and writer Amy Chua has surely used strict parenting, not letting her kids attend to a sleepover or even having a playdate, making her playing violin and piano in her sparetime. Sophia Chua uses an example of how her mother and dad pushed her to learn something new in a school-assignment by not letting her interview her grandparents, which would have been the easy way out, but instead pushing her to interview a terrifying Israeli paratrooper. All in all, Amy Chua used strict child-raising technique, and though Sophia Chua admits that it was not a tea party, she is glad that she had a so-called tiger mom. In text 2, parenting guru Dr Bryan Caplan claims that children should be allowed to eat pizza and watch more television. He thinks that parents try to hard when bringing up their children, instead they should stop trying to control them, stop making...

...so are the styles of parenting that is used. Parents use different approaches to influence them in raising their children to become well rounded adults in today’s world. This can also depend on the social and cultural demands that are felt at present. Psychologists have always been interested in how children are developed by parents and thus research has seen where children were raised in different environments can at a much later time in their lives grow up to have the same personalities, where there is also the fact of those that are raised in the same environment grow up to have different personalities. Baumrind’s four parenting styles have shown the different manner in which parents have contributed to their children development on their lives. In the Authoritarian parenting rules and regulations play a significant part in this style, parents expect their children to be focused and to follow the strict rules that are applied by the parents with little or no interference. Authoritative parenting still follows the rules and regulations part, but allows the parents to listen to their children and have a two way communication process. Permissive parenting makes little or no demands on children, punishment rarely happens; it is conducted more like a friend basis than a parent. Uninvolved parenting shows the parents non involvement in the child’s life, the child can basically do as he she pleases. The parent only provides the basic needs. Our text noted that many of these families struggle with the cost of basic necessities of child rearing. Government and social services are essential in providing financial assistance in most of these families. Many of these families are led by single mothers or grandparents. Statistics show that these families may not have financial security and this insecurity is passed from generation to generation. The family may reside in an unsafe area and the school system lacks the materials needed to provide an education strong enough for the children to prepare the children to succeed in higher education. Extracurricular activities, creative or athletic, are not readily available to families from the underclass due to lack of funding and institionalized prejudice. Four types of parenting styles: Authoritative - parenting with a democratic lean. Controlling yet flexible. A "give and take" attitude towards parenting is evident. Rules and demands are rational.
