Do You Believe That the Greatest Leaders Are Born, Not Made?

...Do you believe that the greatest leaders are born, not made? Saint Leo University Leadership can be viewed as a process in which leaders and followers engage to achieve mutual goals. A leader is a person that displays the characteristics and personality traits of a leader and has the ability to obtain different leadership positions throughout his/her life. It has been said, the single most powerful way to grow as a leader is to become self-aware. (Andersen 2012). Social ability, self confidence, assertiveness, and boldness are all characteristics of natural born leaders. (London 2009) A person’s natural ability to interact with others is called social-ability. All natural leaders display this trait. This characteristic allows leaders to be, understanding, generous, outgoing, friendly, and congenial towards those around them. Those leaders who carry this characteristic usually lands a career in fields that allow them to direct and motivate others. Self-confidence is a fundamental basis from which effective leadership grows. Trying to teach leadership without first building confidence is like building a house on a foundation of sand. (Dao 2008) When you are in a leadership position, you have to not only know when to make a sound judgment, but you have to be able to do so. When looking at a leader’s self-confidence, you have to ask yourself; “ Is this person willing to go where no other leader dared to go?” A person in a position of power who lacks......

Influencing Leadership

...Final Paper - Influencing Leadership Over time there have been many of leaders in our world’s history, all of which have left their mark in some way, shape, or form. Some of the world’s greatest leaders have left a negative mark behind them where as many have found ways to leave a positive mark in their wake. One of the greatest things that any leader can strive for is the worldly influences they leave behind for generations to follow. It is in these influences, both positive and negative, that leaders of modern time are able to model their leadership style. One of the greatest things I wish to achieve is the ability to have any leadership I have exhibited to transcend me in death in order for our world’s future leader’s a better chance to provide positive leadership practices and induce proper change when required. Spanning as far back in time as records can call upon there have always been people placed into positions of leadership. In the prehistoric times when societies were merely small groups of Neanderthals we now call “cavemen” there was always an alpha male. The alpha male was typically the strongest and wisest of the group, charged with the safety in all decisions made by the group to ensure the best possible chances for survival in the harsh prehistoric times. Later, as time passed along these Neanderthals developed further and crated the larger societies of the ancient Egyptian empire. In the times of the ancient Egyptian empire leadership started......

...It was exciting to look back into our history at someone who many revere as our greatest leader. Many people today, believe that Abraham Lincoln was and is the greatest President the United States has ever seen. Donald Phillips shares his agreement with this sentiment in his well written book, "Lincoln On Leadership." The book itself was thoroughly enjoyable. It was a very easy read and shared much of President Lincoln's leadership through the eyes and stories of others of that day. This book is a great history lesson of the period of the Civil War and Lincoln's legacy. Through numerous stories, Donald Phillips shares example after example of Lincoln's style of leadership. According to Phillips, "In order to comprehend modern leadership theory and be successful in the future, leaders must look to the past - to President Abraham Lincoln, for example - who routinely practiced nearly all of the 'revolutionary thinking' techniques that have been preached to American industry in the last ten to fifteen years. Lincoln can be looked to as the ideal model for desirable, effective leadership." We would agree for the most part with his assessment of Abraham Lincoln as a leader. This book highlights a number of wonderful leadership characteristics and skills. The one characteristic that seemed to come to the front the most was Lincoln's ability to be a "Servant Leader." Through Lincoln's own writings and words, plus the writings and words of many others it seems clear that he......

...Leadership at its greatest Potential An important phil Dr.Woodard 07/21/2011 “Vision without execution is Hallucination” * Thomas Edison A leader is someone that has a vision, a well thought out vision. It is a person that actually took the time to plan out their work and make things happen. Leaders see a problem that needs to be fixed or a goal that needs to be achieved. It may be something that no one else sees or simply something that no one else wants to tackle. Whatever it is, it is the focus of the leaders attention and they handle with a single-minded hard work. I know you may ask, what is the difference between a leader and a entrepreneurial leader? Simple. First you have to know the definition of an entrepreneur. An entrepreneur is an individual who accepts financial risks and undertakes new financial ventures. There has been research on the question that leadership is a trait that someone is born with rather than something that is learned. Characteristics of an entrepreneur include spontaneous creativity, the ability and willingness to make decisions in the absence of solid data, and a generally risk-taking personality. An entrepreneur may be driven by a need to create something new or build something tangible. Rarely can entrepreneurs make a company succeed by themselves. This is much like the fact that the greatest athlete doesn't ensure that their team will win if the other players cannot perform. As such, entrepreneurs need to be able to identify......

Leadership

...Leadership "The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things." (Ronald Reagan) I thought this quote did the best job of explaining what exactly a leader can be. Being a leader can be one of the toughest goals or achievements in a person’s lifetime. It can be achieved through hard work, determination, and the respect of others. Hard work is not something that most people enjoy or choose to do. It’s merely a choice of effort in which you gage your self worth. Many people choose the take the easy way in most things they do and in the end it might work out the same for that person, but in most cases you will see a bigger reward for having worked as hard as possible. Some say hard work can be measured in effort and time spent. The longer you spend trying your best at something the better chance you will have to succeed in whatever it is that your doing. The effort one gives during that time period is the tough part. If you can hold yourself accountable for your best effort at all times then your end result will pay off. One of the best sports examples for this would be repetition such as practice and training. Determination is a characteristic of a person that must either be god given or a choice made by the person to act accordingly. A good leader is determined to be the best they can and make others around them the best they can be. There will be obstacles in everyone’s life, but...

It felt that elevating the brand to the status of a national icon, it could not only expand the user-base but also break free from the clutter. Tata salt's greatest strength as a brand was derived from its association with trust. Its parent, the Tata group, had built its equity on the very concept of leadership with trust. Thus the advertising strategy was aimed at rendering the twin messages of (1)purity (rational emotional expressions) of the brand and (2) its leadership position Tata decided that the best way to differentiate was to connect with the consumer at an emotional level, since competitors were focussing on the functional properties of salt. So, while Tata salt had thus far been positioned on the rational aspects of 'purity', its new positioning would carry this proposition forward but within the larger context of the consumer's life, encompassing both rational and emotional manifestations of 'purity'. Utilitarianism in Ethics

...him, the government commander put Jim in a life changing situation, kill the rebel leader himself and he along with the remaining rebels get let go. If he failed to do so, the commander and his troops will execute all the rebels, sack their village for anything of value, and leave Jim stranded in the rainforest with no supplies, resulting in almost certain death. Through analyzing the theory of ethical relativism, we were able to decide that Jim should in fact kill the rebel leader, but what if we analyze another ethical theory? Will we come up with the same answer as we did before? Or is it possible that through the research of different theories and ideas we can come up with a completely different response to Jim’s unusual predicament? Using a new theory, utilitarianism, or, the idea that actions are right if they are useful or for the benefit of a majority, we can further analyze why Jim should still kill the rebel leader and why it is a better answer than if we were to use relativism. This paper will describe the ethical theory of utilitarianism in great detail, it will than be applied to Jim’s situation just like before, challenge opposing viewpoints of utilitarianism, refresh ourselves on why we originally picked relativism for Jim’s situation, and than we will analyze why utilitarianism, as opposed to relativism, is a better theory to use to aide Jim in his decision to execute the rebel leader. The theory of utilitarianism is fairly straightforward to understand,......

Ray Lewis Leadership Analysis

...Ray Lewis Leadership Analysis Leadership is defined as “a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task”. In my opinion, leadership is one of the most desirable qualities that a person can possess. No matter the environment, leaders are needed in every aspect of life. Children need leaders to help them develop, students need leaders to help them learn, and teams need leaders to help the group achieve a common goal. But the real question emerges, how does one become a leader? Are leaders born, or do they rise to the occasion? How do leaders get their peers to rally around their actions? Former National Football League linebacker Ray Lewis of the Baltimore Ravens epitomizes what a leader should be on the field. Lewis was a linebacker for 17 seasons (1996-2012) for the Baltimore Ravens, and the early 2000’s Ravens defense is considered one of the greatest units in sports history. However, while Ray Lewis was viewed as one of the best on the field leaders in NFL history, however his legacy, reputation, and image were tainted by actions away from the playing field.. How is it that a figure like Ray Lewis could be so revered on the field, but off the field he was heavily criticized for his actions and behavior? Throughout this essay I will analyze Ray Lewis’ upbringing and discuss how he developed his leadership qualities that caused former teammate Jamal Lewis to say, “In recent history, I can’t......
