GREEN CLOUD COMPUTING
ABSTRACT:

Cloud computing is a highly scalable and cost-effective infrastructure for running HPC, enterprise and Web applications. However, the growing demand of Cloud infrastructure has drastically increased the energy consumption of data centers, which has become a critical issue. High energy consumption not only translates to high operational cost, which reduces the profit margin of Cloud providers, but also leads to high carbon emissions which is not environmentally friendly. Hence, energy-efficient solutions are required to minimize the impact of Cloud computing on the environment. In order to design such solutions, deep analysis of Cloud is required with respect to their power efficiency. Thus, in this chapter, I discuss various elements of Clouds which contribute to the total energy consumption and how it is addressed in the literature. I also discuss the implication of these solutions for future research directions to enable green Cloud computing. The paper also explains the role of Cloud users in achieving this goal.

...Discuss three major drivers that motivate organizations to introduce green IT initiatives. The idea of green technology has been around for many years following the trend of green movement which has been raising its hype over the past decade. Green IT refers to the study and practice of using computers and IT resources in a more efficient and environmentally responsible way (McCabe, 2009). It focuses on reducing the environmental impact of industrial processes and innovative technologies caused by the Earth’s growing population. Mainly this means creating fully recyclable products, reducing pollution, proposing alternative technologies in various fields, and creating a center of economic activity around technologies that benefit the environment (Gingichashvili, 2007). Molla (2008) identified three generic forces that can influence the adoption of Green IT — economic forces, regulatory forces, and ethical forces. Economic forces refer to the need for pursuing internal efficiency and market performance (Molla, et al., 2009). A research reveals that cost is the overriding factor for 70% of small businesses IT decision makers to invest in green technologies (Silcock, 2010). Green technology offers the same functionality as traditional technology, and for much the same up-front price. However, it also adds a host of additional benefits in terms of costs, technology and its influence on the organization. For example, green networking switches use less energy and so generate......

Task 1 Green computing is the environmentally responsible use of computers and related resources and covers many potential areas of use. This research project was conducted by We Are Big Pharma, Inc. to learn more about green computing technologies and large corporate initiatives. Several green computing areas were researched and our findings are described below: Data center and overall energy efficiency Data centers are huge consumers of energy due to the electrical demands of the hardware components and the cooling systems that are required to maintain the optimal environment for the hardware. Largely because of the high cost of the energy required (estimated at $0.71 per hardware dollar by 2011), many companies are looking for ways to be more energy efficient. IBM expanded a data center in Boulder, Colorado and made the facility 45% more energy efficient than their typical data center. They used their own high-density computing systems with server and storage virtualization in conjunction with energy-efficient power and cooling systems (Brodkin, 2007). Disposal of electronic waste and recycling Electronic waste is a major concern to communities and countries around the world due to the volume of generated waste and the toxic components that may contaminate the ground, water, and impact workers in the waste facilities. Dell is a......

Benefits of Cloud Computing

...BENEFITS OF CLOUD COMPUTING TO BUSINESSES Cloud computing, the most buzzed word in this era offers benefits to all. For both small and large businesses as well cloud computing acts as an asset. It allows them to set up what is essentially a virtual office to give the business organizations the flexibility of connecting to their business anywhere, any time. According to a study conducted by the market research company Vanson Bourne, they found that there were numerous factors driving business organizations towards cloud adoption. The report summarized eleven drivers of cloud adoption along with quantifiable improvements these companies have achieved by deploying cloud services to improve productivity, lower cost, and improve time to market. The eleven drivers or the benefits of cloud computing to businesses are as follows: 1. Fresh Software- Immediate upgrades put new features and functionality into workers’ hands to make them more productive. Further, software enhancements are typically released quite frequently. This is in contrast to home grown or purchased software that might have major new releases only once a year or so and take significant time to roll out. 2. Do more with less-With cloud computing, companies can reduce the size of their own data centers — or eliminate their data center footprint altogether. The reduction of the numbers of servers, the software cost, and the number of staff can significantly reduce IT costs without impacting an organization’s IT......

Cloud computing provides computation, software, data access, and storage services that do not require end-user knowledge of the physical location and configuration of the system that delivers the services. Parallels to this concept can be drawn with the electricity grid, where end-users consume power without needing to understand the component devices or infrastructure required to provide the service. Cloud computing describes a new supplement, consumption, and delivery model for IT services based on Internet protocols, and it typically involves provisioning of dynamically scalable and often virtualized resources It is a byproduct and consequence of the ease-of-access to remote computing sites provided by the Internet. This frequently takes the form of web-based tools or applications that users can access and use through a web browser as if they were programs installed locally on their own computers.[5] Typical cloud computing......
