#3 How much of the world’s global greenhouse gases are the result of computing? Google says that approximately 2% of the world’s global greenhouse gases are the from the ITC field. The ITC sector is comprised of information and communications technology. This includes technology for computing and mobile phones.
List several factors that will tend to retard or accelerate data center power consumption both globally and in the United States. * Energy is a growing concern for data centers. * Advances in server equipment technologies and increased demand for computing power have increased load densities in the computer room, which in turn has caused corresponding increases in data center power consumption. The increased energy consumption in the data center is, simply put, an increased demand for computing power. * An increased need for network storage is also a factor. The trend toward increasing load density in the computer room is an exacerbating factor for the increase in data center energy consumption. This is a result of advances in semiconductor technologies that yield smaller chips and advances in server technologies. These together allow more computer technology to be packed into smaller physical spaces. * Heat generated by computer equipment must be removed from the area in order to prevent overheating, in order to avoid over-heating, increased computer load density results in increased heat density, which becomes the challenge for the HVAC equipment design.
The design choices that Google says will lower data center power consumption are: * Measuring PUE * PUE = Total Facility Energy/IT Equipment Energy * It is how effectively they delivery cooling power to their equipment * The more often it is measured the more meaningful the measurement is * Incorporate PUE measurements into statements for building

...to reduce data center power consumption? What value of PUE should data center managers strive for? - PUE is simply defined as “Power Usage Effectiveness”. It measures how efficiently data centers use energy. PUE is an important place to start because it makes Google to measure the change in usage effectiveness. The ratio of PUE is total facility energy over IT equipment energy. A PUE of 1.00 would be best, but 1.09 was the lowest estimated value until 2011 as the video says. Data center managers are still striving for that. PUE = IT Equipment Energy + Facility Overhead Energy / IT Equipment Energy 2. Describe the five methods recommended by Google for reducing power consumption. - Measure PUE As I mentioned in Question 1, the industry uses a ratio called Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) to measure and help reduce the energy used for non-computing functions. To effectively use PUE, it's important to measure often (at least once per second). If the ratio has a 1.00 PUE, it means the energy can be used in the most effective way possible. - Manage airflow Good air flow management is significant to efficient data center operation. By Minimize hot and cold air mixing, Google reduces its power consumption. Google should eliminate hot spots and be sure to use blanking plates (or flat sheets of metal) for any empty slots in the rack. Thermal modeling using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) can help data center managers quickly characterize and optimize air flow for their...

Greening Supply Chain Management

...Introduction Nowadays, the consciousness of environment has increased for past few decades and people know about the environmental issues in the world such as greenhouse effect, global warming, use of toxic substances, and decreasing in non-replenish resources. As we know, Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) has shown up in the last few years. This ideology covers each stage in manufacturing in front to the last stage of lifecycle and from the product design to recycling activity. Besides that, Green Supply Chain Management can also be applied by other parties, such as government, industry, education and so on. After doing some research, we have found that Srivastara (2007) explained the Green Supply Chain Management actually relates to a wide-range of manufacture from product design to reprocesses or destroy. The principium is more likely to the lifecycle of the manufacturer goods while according to the Sean Gilbert (2001) said, the process of incorporating environmental criteria of concerns into organizational purchasing decision and long-term relationship with suppliers is actually act as a way of greening the supply chain (UK Essays, 2014). Brief Description Of The Term “Green Supply Chain Management” Supply chain management can be defined as the management of the flow of goods. It is also the coordination of a complex network of activities, which involved in delivering finished product from point of origin to point of consumption. Except for this definition with...

...Ozone Layer Depletion: Effects and Causes of Ozone Depletion Ozone is a colorless gas found in the upper atmosphere of the Earth and formed by the action of ultraviolet radiation on oxygen. Ozone forms a layer in the stratosphere, which protects life on Earth from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation. Ads by Google Olay Total Effects 1 Bottle Fights 7 Signs of Ageing, Try Olay Total Effects Today! www.olay.in Today, one of the most discussed and serious environmental issues is the ozone layer depletion, the layer of gas that forms a protective covering in the Earth's upper atmosphere. Ozone is formed when oxygen molecules absorb ultraviolet photons and undergo a chemical reaction known as photo dissociation or photolysis, where a single molecule of oxygen breaks down to two oxygen atoms. The free oxygen atom (O), then combines with an oxygen molecule (O2) and forms a molecule of ozone (O3). The ozone molecules, in turn absorb ultraviolet rays between 310 to 200 nm wavelength and thereby prevent these harmful radiations from entering the Earth's atmosphere. In the process, ozone molecules split up into a molecule of oxygen and an oxygen atom. The oxygen atom (O) again combines with the oxygen molecule (O2) to regenerate an ozone (O3) molecule. Thus, the total amount of ozone is maintained by this continuous process of destruction and regeneration. Ozone layer depletion first captured the attention of the whole world in the later half of 1970 and since then, many discussions...

Abstract Global warming is one of the most potentially disastrous issues facing mankind in the early 21st century, considered to be caused by man-made greenhouse gas emissions. Approximately 30% of the man-made carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions causing global warming is created by the burning of fossil fuels to produce electricity or used as a direct energy source. The use of solar energy to pre-heat water for industrial, commercial and institutional and residential purposes can reduce electricity usage by up to 2% to 6% in southern Ontario. Adding the emissions from using natural gas directly to heat water a figure of 5% to 17% reduction in CO2 emissions can be derived by the use of solar energy to pre-heat water. This report details the equipment necessary for such a domestic solar hot water system (DSHW). The information has...

Presidential Commission President Obama, heading a special commission, has requested a draft for a National Code of Corporate Responsibility. Once completed, the Code will be widely disseminated as a national blueprint for proper business conduct. It is, therefore, imperative that the new code contain the necessary business, social and ethical policies that will lift the American corporate community out of its disreputable position and accelerate its return to global superiority -- as both economically productive and socially/morally unassailable.  There are two aspects to the Corporate Responsibility Code which the President wants addressed. First, what conduct or practice rules, principles or policies should be in place for corporations, and how they function as business entities, interacting with other institutions and with individual members of the public?  Secondly, what conduct or practice rules, principles or policies should be in place for individual business managers, and how they function and relate to their subordinates, their stockholders, and members of the public? Your assignment is to draft the two parts of this Code. Congress will only approve the new Corporate Responsibility Code that is proposed if it addresses key issues for both corporate conduct...

Carbon Tax Integrated Marketing

...this transformation to take advantage of the economic opportunities stemming from the next stage of global development that will be powered by clean energy many countries have taken up carbon pricing of which carbon tax is one of these. Carbon tax is a tax is an environmental tax that is levied on the amount of carbon that is contained by a certain fuel. Carbon is present in hydrocarbon fuels such as gasoline and other crude oil products and is released as carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is a heat trapping gas which facilitates global warming. On the other hand other fuels such as wind and solar do not emit these heat entrapment gases thus are considered environment friendly as they do not lead to global warming. GLOBAL WARMING AND CLIMATE CHANGE The main reason for these carbon pricing methods such as carbon tax is to reduce the emission of green house gases such as carbon dioxide that cause environmental degradation through global warming. Australia has seen an increase of 0.9 ºC since 1950. We have observed changes to our climate faster than anything earth as seen for at least 1800 years. Surface temperature stations have been used since the 1850s, and there are a number of complete records dating back to then. Some of the effects of continued temperature increases are that the sea level continues to rise, the ice sheets continue to retreat, and coral bleaching accelerates. The flow-on effects of these symptoms...

Today, intelligent, green vehicles are driving the future of transportation. The looming energy and environmental MegaCrisis has carmakers scrambling to raise fuel economy and develop commercially viable vehicles that limit pollutants. Enabling technologies such as advanced IT systems, artificial intelligence, and speech recognition are giving rise to smart cars that drive themselves and to highway "road trains" or platoons. However, some skepticism remains for the latter, as the rapid installation of intelligent systems in vehicles currently outpaces the level of R&D for platoons. Drawing on TechCast's work, this article explains how hybrids,...

Resource Revolution

...M A R C H 2 014 Are you ready for the resource revolution? Stefan Heck and Matt Rogers Meeting increasing global demand requires dramatically improving resource productivity. Yet technological advances mean companies have an extraordinary opportunity not only to meet that challenge but to spark the next industrial revolution as well. Most cars spend more than 95 percent of their time sitting in garages or parking lots. When in use, the average occupancy per vehicle is well below two people, even though most cars have five seats. Roads are likewise extremely inefficient. Freeways can operate at peak throughput (around 2,000 cars a lane per hour) only when they are less than 10 percent covered by cars. Add more, and congestion lowers speeds and reduces throughput. Most roads reach anything like peak usage only once a day and typically in only one direction. For a visualization of these dynamics, see Exhibit 1. The story is similar for utilities. Just 20 to 40 percent of the transmission and distribution capacity in the United States is in use at a given time, and only about 40 percent of the capacity of power plants. The heat-rate efficiency of the average coal-fired power plant has not significantly improved in more than 50 years—an extreme version of conditions in many industries over the past century. Automotive fuel-efficiency improvement, for example, has consistently lagged behind economy-wide productivity growth. Underutilization and chronic inefficiency cannot...

Smart Grid

...The Smart Grid is a decentralized and interactive system. The interactive nature will involve two-way communication between the utility companies and the consumer. Through Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) consumers are able to make better energy use decisions, defer usage to off-peak periods, and contribute power to peak period usage. Utilities will be better able to detect problems within their own systems and react quickly to replace power sources from multiple possible sources. The “Prices to Devices” concept, based on the premise that energy is priced in real time, allows for ongoing transmission of power availability and pricing to “smart” home controllers and devices. The devices can interpret this information to alter energy usage accordingly – to defer usage to more amenable and less expensive times. The current U.S. power grid is no doubt an amazing machine, but it has many limitations and poses many challenges. One main drawback of the current system is that it was built to move power in one direction – from the plant to the consumer. Years ago this made sense, but today it limits the ability to handle power generated from wind turbines and solar panels. The smart grid uses two-way communication, which handles excess distributed power as well as detects and avoids potential power outages. Currently, power companies rely on customers to tell them if there is an outage or problem. The smart grid automatically detects the problem and instantly reroutes...
