Economic Systems: GREENLAND vs. IRAN An economic system is a system of production, consumption, and distribution of goods and services. An economic system of a country is defined by its society, government, and who decides who gets what. A major factor in an economic system of a country is its type of government. Greenland, having a parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy, highly depends on imports and human capital from the Kingdom of Denmark. In a theocratic system of government, such that of Iran, the government defers not to civil development of law, but to an interpretation of the will of God as set out in religious scripture and authorities. Other factors include: Natural Resources, Land Use, Life Expectancy & Fertility Rates, Literacy Rates, GDP Per Capita, and the Economic Problems that the country is facing. Greenland’s economy remains critically dependent on exports of shrimp and fish, income from resource exploration and extraction, and on a substantial subsidy from the Danish Government. The public sector, including publicly owned enterprises and the municipalities, plays the dominant role in Greenland's economy. Greenland is rich in minerals such as gold, diamonds, and platinum, and energy resources such as oil and gas. The relative ease with which Greenland has weathered the economic crisis is due to increased hydrocarbon and mineral exploration and extraction activities. Although the government has pursued conservative fiscal and money policies, public pressure rose for better schools, health care and retirement systems. Tourism also offers another avenue of economic growth for Greenland, with increasing numbers of cruise lines now operating in Greenland's western and southern waters during the peak summer tourism season.
