Group Behavior / Dimensions of Group Structure
A group is a tool toward accomplishing the task of a company. Tuckman’s developed five stages pertaining group development include forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning. Managers ought to understand various group behaviors and remove potential barriers within the groups so as to attain organizational goals. The must also put an effort of implementing an appropriate team size structure so as to enable all members to participate and contribute equally. The theory of Tuckman tends to explain how various teams are formed by utilizing five group development stages.
The first stage is forming. Under this stage, team members get to interact and know each other. Forming is all about the significance of bringing a team together as well as to be sure that that particular team acts as one. It is quite significant to be sure that the team members understand what is forming. Members tend to know the focus pertaining their mission, schedule, responsibilities and rules at the forming stage. As a manager, one would ensure that forming is a norm and assure that effective standards are set and appropriately applied daily (Champoux, 2011). Moreover, a manager should communicate the task ahead as well as ensure the team meets.
Another significant stage is storming. In the stage of storming, group conflict storming can be quite productive. This can be done by exposing ideas of members and refining proper goals. Under this stage, team members require vivid clarifications and commitment. A manager ought to ensure that he quite understands and addresses the concerns of the groups so as to minimize conflicts within the group. Furthermore, a manager should guide the ideas and attitudes of the group which he or she believes will suit the organization (Champoux, 2011). The norming stage is also significant toward helping a group to reach the performing stage. In this stage, group members become more cohesive since they share ideas, give various feedbacks and become greatly creative in accomplishing tasks. A manager ought to guide the flow of information within the group as well as ensure that he or she motivates the team by developing an environment that is open.
Under the performing stage, groups become unified and motivated. Moreover, the group tends to be productive. In addition, the morale of the team tends to be high and members get along with other team members and support each other. At this stage, a manager continues to fuel the efforts of the team with accomplishments’ signs. In most cases, a manager should collect useful resources which can help members of the team to attain the performance level. Members also borrow ideas, processes and ideas from centralized areas in order to draw on the history and traditions of the group. Determining the culture of the group helps in motivating the conformity of members (Losh, 2011). Under the adjourning stage, there is an occurrence of the groups’ disbanding. At this stage, activities are wrapped up and the task’s conclusion is made. Thus, managers acquire useful information pertaining the implementation of future groups.
An effective manager should be aware of the technological developments as well as how they impact the performance both within and between groups. The five group development stages are quite essential toward achieving success and set goals. Managers should also enhance effective communication in order to foster these developments.
