Group A Fitness App Usage Academic Essay Fitness in today’s culture is affected in many different ways, one of the main in which it is influenced is through the form of media. The term fitness holds two meanings: first is the condition of the physicality of being fit and healthy and the other, the ability of being physically suited to fulfill given tasks or roles(Google Dictionary. 2013). For example fitness to a marathon runner would be determined on their stamina and the duration it takes to run a certain number of miles, whereas a body builder’s level of fitness would determine on their level of muscular strength and power. Once the term fitness has been defined, then the impact which media has on fitness must be analyzed....

Etnography

...Brittany Dupin ENG 102 Ethnography Essay Professor Flynn April 10, 2013 Fitness Subculture Fitness has became the new look around the globe, as it helps to enhance the looks of the body, mainly targeting young adults, by giving those a toned shape. In the recent years, America’s obsession of “the perfect body” has been spread to the minds of others across the nation. The culture within the United States in particular, has placed a heavy emphasis on the drive towards leading the fittest, healthiest lifestyle - mainly with women. Today, many people have joined the fitness subculture to have the life style of being fit and healthy. Unfortunately in the societal culture today, there shows to be a high rate of obesity due to the lack of exercise in a person’s lifestyle. Recently, a researcher took a survey at a community college, located in the downtown metro area of Louisville, Kentucky. This survey was taken anonymously; giving a total number of twenty-five students being surveyed. The topic of this survey, fitness, helps to gather the questions and answers that are collected to receive information from the different age groups. With the given age groups, it was to help the researcher to break down the data based on age and gender. It is important to remember that fitness is an individual quality that varies from person to person as age and gender influences this reasoning. The older that we age, it is very coincidental, that the body becomes less active as it was....

Ethnographic Research- Behaviors and Mannerisms at the Gym

...The research group chose to study behaviors and mannerisms particularly associated with subculture groups seen in gym environments. This topic of research was chosen not just because these subculture groups are unique, since they are only seen within a gym environment, but because fitness and health are very important and relevant topics to the current concerns society faces today such as, obesity. According to the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association and Industry Insights, Inc (IHRSA), there were over 45 million Americans that belonged to a gym or health club in 2010 (IHRSA, 2010). However, obesity is a growing concern. Shockingly, there are major obesity concerns pertaining to the target demographic group, which is gym-goers between the ages of 18 to 39. The IHRSA found that the largest group of gym members are between the ages of 18 to 45 (IRHSA, 2010). Yet, key findings from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted in 2011 through 2012 showed that 30.3% of individuals between the ages of 20 to 39 were obese (NCHS, 2011-2012). Some excuses for not going to the gym and living a healthy lifestyle, which are leading to obesity issues, stem from people feeling intimidated by gym’s subcultures. Two of the most common reasons for not going the gym...

Final Fitness World

...Matthew McAndrews Module 5- Final Essay Assignment Understanding Fitness and Wellness Professor Katherine Cabai 26 May 2013 Every day the fitness world is becoming larger and larger. Everyone is trying to work towards having that “perfect body”. With that in mind, there are some important aspects an individual must understand about fitness and wellness in order to achieve their goals. Usually the best place to start is with themselves, by having figuring out their current fitness status. They need to also evaluate the exercises and activities they have been doing and improve their programs that will help make improvements towards their goal. Fitness and wellness isn’t all about working out, the individual needs to work on a diet plan and ways to control metabolic functions. Exercise and eating healthy are inseparable and come hand & hand with one another. Many people in the United States have struggled to eat healthy and also stay with a work out routine, which has resulted in an increase in obesity in America. Good health is just as important as fitness is, so it is important to create a good balance in order to achieve a high quality of life. To get a full understanding on where you stand on your health and fitness levels, you should regularly assess yourself. There are some specific attributes that an individual should check often to properly judge where they stand on their health and fitness levels....

Company History

...Corporate Histories History of Under Armour Under Armour is currently an athletic apparel, footwear, and accessory brand with the mission “to make all athletes better through passion, science, and the relentless pursuit of innovation” (Under Armour website). The brand was founded in 1996 by University of Maryland football player Kevin Plank in the basement of his grandmother’s house in Baltimore, Maryland. Based on his own athletic experience, Plank was inspired to create a sweat-wicking undershirt that did not get moisture-laden with sweat during games and practice. The company gained initial success with grassroots marketing among the athletic community. Under Armour did not reach mainstream consumers until the company’s products appeared in the 1999 film Any Given Sunday. It has continued to appear in other movies and television shows, and it has gained many athletic stars as spokespeople of the brand. Under Armour launched its first television advertisement, featuring football player Eric Ogbogu, in 2003. These marketing efforts have done well to expand consumer recognition of the brand’s initial product. Sweat-wicking shirts are now commonly known as “Under Armour” similar to the way tissues are now often just called “Kleenex.” With its evolving brand image, Under Armour has been able to expand beyond the athletic performance apparel market, which it dominated at 75% of market share in 2005. Following its initial public offering in 2005, which raised over $100......
