...Topic: Examine groupware systems including their various types and examples of organisational activities they support, and discuss how they would evolve in the future. Student number: 21819254 Introduction Nowadays, usage of IT systems in enterprise environment is growing at an incredible pace. The main purpose of it is to help groups of cooperating individuals to overcome time and spatial barriers. Enterprise systems implementation has led to the problem of cooperation between companies to reach their goals and successfully operate in the current market environment. The rising demand for collaboration software has led to the groupware market expansion. Collaborative software has influenced the expansion of enterprises by improving the effectiveness of a range of tools such as the ability to communicate over long distances. This software had a significant impact on expansion of enterprises and increased efficiency of its work, for example, the communication over long distances. Along with development of technologies, the way workers operate in organisations has completely changed. Monotonous and time consuming tasks can be easily solved using the computer. Consequently, this change led to increase in the number of “knowledge workers”, workers, whose main capital is knowledge (Davenport, Thomas, 2005). Organisations more often require employees, who have the skill and experience of working within a team. Obviously, teamwork has a significantly greater efficiency, especially in...

Managment of Information

...1) The term decision support system has been defined by different authors though the terminology might be diiiferent varying with tnhe author .They all allude to the fact at decision support systems consists of five imperative aspects or be it elements. The five elements are Data Management The data management component performs the function of storing and maintaining the information that you want your Decision Support System to use. The data management component, therefore, consists of both the Decision Support System information and the Decision Support System database management system. The information you use in your Decision Support System comes from one or more of three sources: Organizational information; you may want to use virtually any information available in the organization for your Decision Support System. What you use, of course, depends on what you need and whether it is available. You can design your Decision Support System to access this information directly from your company’s database and data warehouse. However, specific information is often copied to the Decision Support System database to save time in searching through the organization’s database and data warehouses. External information: some decisions require input from external sources of information. Various branches of federal government, Dow Jones, Compustat data, and the internet, to mention just a few, can provide additional information for the use with a Decision Support System. ...

Information Market

...4. Do you think that information appliances like PDAs will replace personal computer (PCs) in business applications? Explain. Handheld microcomputer devices known as personal digital assistants (PDAs) are some of the most popular device in the information appliance category. Web-enabled PDAs use touch screens, pen-based handwriting recognition, or keypads so that mobile workers can send and received e-mail, access the Web, and exchange information such as appointments, to do lists, and sales contacts with their desktop PCs or Web server. PDAs have some advantages like smaller size, lighter weight and wireless network functions. They are widely used because of their mobility. For example, iPhone is a great product, and a lot of people are crazy about it. Everyday a vast number of people exchange e-mails and access all kinds of information on their iPhones very conveniently and quickly. However, I do not think that the information appliances like PDAs will replace personal computer (PCs) in the normal business applications. In this contemporary society, personal computers are regarded as formal office appliances because of their powerfulness and versatility. So, PDAs can hardly replace them in a couple of years because of their shortcomings. For example, they still cannot deal with big documents or save huge size information in their data storage. And because of their mobility, PDAs are always equipped with the touch screen without keyboard and mouse. It is kind...

Which Communication Technology to Use?

... In the first situation, a virtual team has team members situated in different time zones. The team is not aware of the latest trends in communication technology. In the second, a virtual team has members in different locations in the same time zone, such as New York and Washington, DC. The team is aware of the latest trends in communication technology. Duarte and Tennant Snyder (2006) use the term groupware to describe the entire category of electronic options available to a virtual team. It is a broad term that refers to electronic systems that integrate software (SW) and hardware (HW) to enable communication and collaborative work. The most commonly used groupware today is e-mail (e.g. MS Outlook) and instant messaging (e.g. DCO chat, jabber). E-mail is the best understood technology for distance collaboration. It can track responses, broadcast the same message to virtual team members, forward copies to leadership and project stakeholders and seen also as a permanent written record of discussion, unlike video teleconferencing (VTC). Asynchronous groupware includes e-mail, personal computing devices, group calendars and schedules, bulletin boards, team web sites, non-real-time database (db) sharing and conferencing, and workflow applications (Durate &Tennant Snyder, p. 40) These applications are easy to learn and most useful to virtual teams, especially if team members are situated in different time zones and not aware of...

I will describe to you some of the hardships of adding new groupware to a system that is already in place. Also have you ever wondered what a wiki does or what it could do for you? Well I in this paper you may find your answer. Let us start with some of the hardships of implementing new groupware into a system. First the costs can be frightening when you see it. By this I mean that the new groupware will require training for the personnel using it. So you will have to pay to have someone come in and train the new personnel. You also will lose efficiency at first while everyone is trying to learn the system and that causes a loss in productivity. Also you would have to purchase the groupware in most cases and that is not so bad if it is for only a few systems, but when you are buying I for an entire network of systems than it can start adding up pretty quickly. Second problem to overcome is resistance. By this I mean the personnel that will be using the new system may not like the change at first because they have their system already. This can cause the employees to become unhappy with the change and reducing morale in the workplace. Another conflict that could happen is if the groupware is used to save files for the group that anyone can change and save, than someone that may be disgruntled could...

Kudler System Integrity & Validation

...System Integrity & Validation Kimberly Miller ACC 542 February 27, 2012 Melissa Frey Preface Kudler Fine Foods (Kudler) is an upscale specialty food store. They have had remarkable success since their first store opened in 1998, opening a second store in 2000 and a third in 2003. Kudler’s success is dependent on their business model as well as an effective accounting information system (AIS). The current system is strong but could be enhanced to build productivity and profitability. Over the course of the last five weeks the following recommendations have been made to Kudler’s management team to make improvements to their existing system. The value-added and automation of the processes improves accuracy, eliminates double entry and allows for communication between locations. Refine the existing database with the use of flowcharts and ER diagrams to understand the flow of data and move away from broad spreadsheet reports and instead use pivot tables which will provide a summary of data useful for decision-making. Maintain, review, update, and test, policies and procedures, by means of developing good internal controls and auditing them regularly. The following brief will indicate how Kudler will also benefit from audit software and computer assisted auditing techniques (CAATs)...

Teaching Economics with Computer

...Computers in Economics Education 1 The Role Computers Play in Economics Education Oluremilekun Ojo EDIT 6900 – Research Synthesis Computers in Economics Education 2 The Role Computers Play in Economics Education Introduction Schug identified that “economic education helps students develop the critical knowledge and skills they need as citizens to make intelligent decisions and to help shape economic policy” (as cited in Wentland, 2004, p. 640). According to Vowels, “teaching students economics, sometimes called the science of making decisions, is a key ingredient for helping them to become effective citizens, workers, voters, consumers, investors and participants in a healthy economy” (as cited in Wentland, 2004, p. 641). This research topic came about as a result of a current project with an economics teacher who would like to add some form of multimedia component into his syllabus. While trying to develop a suitable application for my client, I had to review the ways that technology is used to teach economics as my guide. In this process, I decided to conduct research into the role of computer technology in economics education. I was initially interested in how technology was introduced in to teaching economics and then retracing its journey into more contemporary uses of technology so that I can securely make predictions for the future. This approach was not very fruitful because I was unable to find articles that gave adequate information regarding the...

This brief will examine the following: how CAAT is used to validate data and system integrity within the system, explain the functions of audit productivity software, and explanation of how audit productivity software might be used in the system designed. How CAAT is used to validate data and system integrity Auditors prefer to use computer assisted auditing techniques (CAATs) for many reasons. They enable auditors to use software applications, extract data for analyzing, look for trends within the data, and identify any potential areas for fraud detect fraudulent data. CAATs are valuable tools for auditors to test and validate computer applications and they can determine whether or not the source code has been compromised. The implementation of CAATs will increase efficiency and the effectiveness of both internal and external audits allowing auditors to analyze all of the financial data, a feat which would not be possible if the audit were conducted manually.
