Group work on”Just Like That” – a short story.

Presentations are due on Thursday. All groups are expected to produce a PP as a visual aid
All group members are expected to say something during the presentation
The presentation is to be uploaded to the English conference (name it according to group number)
Presentations are expected to take minimum 5 minutes – max. 10 minutes.
NB: remember to not only put headings on your PP – put keywords to your answers + illustrative quotes as analytical ‘proof’/backup as well.

GROUP 7: OPENING, TIME, TENSION, PLOT STRUCTURE • Please account for the opening of the short story (type + effect on the reader)

• Please account for the time structure of the short story (what is the time span of the story and is it structured chronologically or not – with which effect?

• How does the story build up tension? Give examples, please (i.e. put a quote on a slide and read it out loud in class when you present your work.)

• Where is the point of no return and the climax in the story, in your opinion? (argue in favour of your choice)

GROUP 6: SETTING/ATMOSPHERE and MOOD • Where does the story take place and why do you think the author chose this setting?

• Please find at least one passage, in which the description of the setting affects the atmosphere and the mood of the story, and demonstrate how this happens (e.g. word choices, strong adjectives, or the like) – make sure to put a text quote on a slide and read it out loud in class + comment on the quote, when you present your findings.

• Can the choice of setting be considered symbolic in any way?

• How important is the setting in this story, in your opinion? (Argue in favour of your answer)

GROUP 5: POINT OF VIEW and NARRATION • What kind of narrator tells the story and from which point(s) of view? –With which effect?

• Find concrete examples that show whether the narrator is omniscient or non-omniscient (or perhaps even both) and put them on a slide + read them aloud during your presentation. Make sure to explain to the rest of class exactly how you can identify the point of view.

• Why do you think the author made these choices as regards narrator and point of view? (This means: what do you think the author’s intention with using this point of view is?)

GROUP 4: Language and writing style. • Please find two examples of religious vocabulary in the story and present these, including the quotes in your PP. Read it aloud, and comment on the effect of this word choice. (Hint: p. 26, lines 15-16). Which associations do these words bring to mind and why has the author chosen this specific type of vocabulary, in your opinion?

• How do expressions such as “like small hands” , “caress”, and “peaceful” affect the reader’s mood, while reading about the first kangaroo shooting (i.e. why did the author use these words and not something else?)

• Find examples of sections in which the narrator chooses to stay purely objective, as if watching and reporting events from the side line. What characterises the language in which such sections are written and why do you think the author has chosen this particular, seemingly neutral and objective writing style?

GROUP 3: CHARACTER SKETCH: THE BOY (characterisation and development)

• Please make an explicit characterisation of the boy (how he acts, appears to an outside observer) – include a quote on a slide to demonstrate this type of characterisation to the rest of the class.

• Please make an implicit characterisation of the boy (his thoughts and feelings) – include a quote on a slide to demonstrate this type of characterisation to the rest of the class.

• Please make a list of the various feelings the boy is going through as the story unfolds (include quotes to give clear examples)

Based on this list of ‘feelings’, please account for the boy’s development during the story.

GROUP 2: CHARACTER RELATIONS: • Please comment on the author’s choice of letting the characters have no names. Why do you think the author has made this choice? (I.e. what is the intended effect?)

• What is the effect of the repetition of the sentence “Don’t walk behind me”, as regards the relationship between the boy and the man?

• Please explain the quote: “He watched while the man strolled among the cripples blessing each with his wand” (p.27, lines 27-28), including it on a slide and reading it aloud during your presentation. Why has the author chosen this particular image to describe the relationship between the two characters?

• In your opinion, does the relationship between the boy and the man develop in any way? (Please comment and argue in favour of your decision by means of relevant text example(s).)

It outlines the considerable advantages of groupwork but also its systemic associated problems. The paper considers the related issues of task complexity, recognition for effort, and strategies for minimising issues concerning group size. The paper also briefly considers strategies for implementing incentives for groupwork members, and outlines the issue of penalties for unproductive group members.
