A mental block is an instance in which someone cannot keep their train of thought or remember something that they should. There are many types of mental blocks and we will list some of them, along with examples, in this assignment.
Perceptual Blocks
A perceptual block causes a disturbance in the way a problem is perceived. Below are types of perceptual blocks and examples of each.
• Stereotyping is when something is perceived in a certain way for so long that it is difficult to view it in another way. For example; if you were stranded in the wilderness and only had your clothes, but had an opportunity to catch fish in a stream, you might be able to pull threads from your clothing to make a fishing line. But you may be so used to only wearing clothes that you may not think of this as a possibility.
• Limiting the problem unnecessarily is when you set unrequired limitations on yourself. Examples of this can be found in many riddles, which trick you into tightening the scope of your thinking so that you miss the obvious. For example, what gets wet when it’s drying?
• Saturation or Information Overload is when you have to have too much information at your disposal tom utilize it efficiently. You might end up spending more time organizing your information than using it to solve your problem. An example of this could be found in computer programming, when an input is bad and you have to look through the entire code to find it. The amount of symbols perceived could be an overload to your perception
Emotional Blocks
An emotional block cause you to be stopped by an emotional barrier. The types of emotional blocks are listed below.
• Fear of Risk Taking is when you allow fear to disrupt your focus. An example of this would be freezing up during a speech or finding yourself unable to jump from the airplane when needed.
Lack of Appetite for Chaos can cause you not become blocked when the solution is not as safe as you are comfortable with. An example would be allowing yourself to lose focus when a team mate is unable to complete their assigned task and you must carry their workload.
• Judging Rather Than Generating Ideas usually happens when an idea is approached with a negative attitude. An example of this could be when you have to complete an assignment when you just got in an argument with someone and can’t focus.
• Lack of Challenge is when the problem seems too mundane to be focused on. An example of this might be missing a due date for a water bill.
• Inability to Incubate is not trying to rush through your problem instead of taking the time to analyze it correctly. An example of this could be someone who has waited until the deadline to write an assignment. They may be so focused on the upcoming deadline that they miss important facts or clues needed for resolution.

Higgins’ Hindrances to Generating Alternatives
These are a few examples of mental blocks that have been collected, along with examples.
• Defining a problem too narrowly, such as trying to get a penny out of a glass bottle and all you have is a string.
• Attacking the symptoms, rather than the real problem; Such as, taking diet pills instead of changing the diet.
• Assuming there is only one right answer, like walking into a wall over and over until you break through instead of walking around because you believed straight through was the only answer.
• Getting hooked on the first solution that comes to mind, such as walking into a wall over and over until you break through instead of walking around because you thought of it first.
• Getting hooked on a solutions that almost works (but really doesn’t,) such as floating on a piece of wood instead of swimming to the life raft when your boat has sunk.
• Being distracted by irrelevant information, such as can be found on many questions in tests which try to distract you from the main objective.
• Getting frustrated by lack of success, such as a guitarist might feel when he has practiced for weeks and made no progress.
• Being too anxious to finish, like worrying about the deadline of a timed test instead of the question at hand.
• Defining the problem ambiguously, such as stating the problem as “I have bad grades” instead of “I don’t study enough.” It does not offer a clear identity of resolution
Goman’s Blocks
Below is a list of Goman’s Blocks and subsequent Goman’s Blockbusters, along with an example of how the blockbuster can be used.
• Negative Attitude or losing focus hampers creativity. Goman suggests an Attitude Adjustment by listing aspects of the problem, such as creating a brainstorming map.
• Fear of Failure and allowing it to cause a loss of focus and drive suggests that Risk Taking will break the block, such as weighing out the risk and identifying the reward. An example would be a fear of water but you are on a sinking boat. Are you more afraid to swim or drown? I’d swim even if I was afraid to.
• Following the Rules hinders innovation, to stop this Goman suggests Breaking the Rules. An example of this could be Amazon’s mission to deliver by drone to drastically improve shipping times.
• Over-reliance on logic hinders imagination. Goman suggest a Creative Internal Climate as the solution. This would be to take time to abandon seriousness and allow your imagination to run free. This process occurs often during writing creatively, such as Science Fiction.
• Belief That You Aren’t Creative can lead to self-fulfilling prophecies. To combat this, Goman suggests Creative Beliefs. An example of this would be to ask yourself “what if” questions and to let your mind wander.

...Michael Navarro GS1140 Problem Solving Theory ANALYIS1.1 Chris Batty A recurring problem I have going in my life is time management. This problem is a tough one for me to resolve and manage. I have incorrectly defined and managed this all my adult life. It has caused me to be late to friend’s parties, friend’s graduations, birthday parties, family functions, social engagements etc…... I have either managed to work late or over sleep or just get lost in a moment and lose all track of time. I have missed important deadlines and dates. It has caused many of my family and friends to be upset and unforgiving of me. I am still having trouble managing my time to this day. Things I think that will better help me in reaching a better time strategy would be to first invest and put time into a calendar/schedule. I would have to create one with for my work schedule and then one for my school schedule and social schedule. Another tool would be to use my iPhone to help remind me of important times and events that I have planned to attend. Another would be a physical calendar that I could write down appointments I need to keep or family and friends birthday and events. Another could be taking an online class on efficiency, and/or time management. Writing down my goals on how to take the corrective steps in managing my time. I believe that improving a few things on time management would benefit me by allowing the proper amount of time to successfully complete my task. In...

The strategies of creative problem solving are a great way to approach problems and great outline to solving problems. One of the complications that I have faced in the past is when I was going to buy a car. My options were to buy a used car with 3,000 dollars or use a used car a gift from my Grandmother. All in the essence of what is more convenient to my lifestyle. Many things come to mind when choosing a car. First question what type of car am I searching? Secondly how am I going to afford the car after I buy or even get it up and running? Many questions follow but referring to the four strategies I tried to figure out as much as I could by self with anyone’s advice. I figure talking to my parents would give me a right idea and at least lead me to a right way. ...Shannon Califf GS1140 Problem Solving DARPA Challenge 1. The problem is that you have to build a vehicle that can travel through the desert in less than 10 hours. One major problem is that you have a very short period of time to build something that you don’t even know will work. Another major problem that we can foresee is that we have no idea what this course looks like at all 2. The speed at which you would have to travel to complete the course in ten hours would be 17.5 mph 3. The fallacy is that you will probably not run this course all the way through without stopping. There are many reasons why are vehicle could stop like mechanical reasons or terrain reasons or are vehicle could even go the wrong way. 4. One major strategy we could use to avoid obstacles is install a camera on the vehicle so we know where it’s navigating as its driving. We could also install lights on the car for areas that are dark. The third thing we could do is to make sure we do our best at figuring out the path our vehicle will be taking. 5. Some disadvantages are that we don’t know if the GPS points are equidistant or how far apart they are. We also don’t know where on the path these points are or if they are in the center or off in a ditch somewhere. We also don’t know if the points are making up a curve or something else. 6. Some strategies we could use is to try and map everything out, make sure we know exactly which path our vehicle is taking...

Heuristics

...James Hulmes GS1140: Problem Solving Theory Week 2: Lab Professor R. Cornell Essay Heuristics (and intuition) plays a dominant role in the creative thinking involved in problem solving. They are so widely used and relied upon that for decades and heuristics has been searched, collected, named, categorized, computerized, and taught in problem solving classes. However, they are not nearly as generally accepted, as are algorithms, in the scaling phase of problem solving. This, I think, is due in part to a misunderstanding leading to unrealistic expectations of heuristics, or how it may be regarded that they are used. Heuristics are often referred to as techniques for finding conceptual solutions and inventive ones at that. Henceforth, they may be incorrectly thought of as algorithms for formulated production of ideas from the (intractable) subconscious. Nonetheless, heuristics are gaining recognition, as methodologies that explicitly use them are becoming known. Heuristic is a structured approach, or algorithm, that consists of five steps: define goals and opportunities, map the process or system, express impact of each step or element, link each impact back to each goal, and organize and consolidate statements. Objectives must be clearly stated when defining goals and opportunities. It’s a process metric that needs improvements. There is functionality that needs to be integrated into the current system or process. There is an undesirable effect to be reduced or eliminated...

...Emmitt Blevins GS1140 Mr. Ellington FAMILY PROBLEMS For my final assignment there was a list of topics to choose from, most of the topics I couldn’t relate to except what I have chosen, a family problem. This topic will be the most difficult to put together, as I will write about a dysfunctional mother. Before she became the dysfunctional mother she had a promising future. When I was in high school I met the mother of my daughter, we fell for each other and got married. Decided we wanted to start a family after a year of being married, we felt it was time. We got pregnant and lost the baby girl at 10 weeks, we were devastated, but we weren’t giving up. Month goes by and we learn we are pregnant once again, this time we took the proper medical steps that we didn’t know about before. We learned we were pregnant right after 9/11, which to us made our pregnancy that much more exciting. Time goes on, life choices have broken me and her up. Our daughter, that’s now 12 years, wasn’t 2 years old yet. I have often wondered to myself, if we didn’t get divorced would she be this way. Is this truly my fault? Then I realize she made her choices which put her where she is today. Since her and I broke up, we have both moved on and started separate lives but always connected. She had gotten remarried and had a new life with three children (2 his 1 hers). She had settled into her life happily, at least that’s how she showed herself to the public. She had started telling...

Problem Solving Theory Project

...Problem Solving Theory Project GS1140 08-13-2014 Antonio Pierce & Dana Jackson Thinking about a recurring problem in my life was tough, being that I’ve just closed on a home, working 45-50 hours a week as a store manager, and going to school , are all their own problems in themselves. The common denominator in all three of these life altering events would be time allocation. Given 24 hours, I have to figure out the best way to divide every single step throughout the day, for the next couple of years to be beneficial to myself as well as my household. My morals or ethics come down to family being the most important in my life. I need correct time allocation to not only help handle the day to day responsibilities that come from caring for my first household. But also satisfying the time spent with my girlfriend in .the same process. This causes a severe split between job and school as well. I need to work in order to provide my half of the bills and relationship spending. But also need school to further advance in my career and make a better living. As the saying goes “Work smarter not harder”. With a better education I can advance to make money as well as work less to satisfy my home and relationship needs. At first I thought the problem was I was doing too much at one time. The real problem is “How to create more time to allocate to my responsibilities simultaneously”. Incorrect time management could possibly lead into failures in my relationship, foreclosure on my home...

...Ethics case study Ashley Bruckman March 12, 2013 HCS/335 Introduction Jerry McCall is Dr. William’s office assistant. He has received professional training as both a medical assistant and a LPN. He is handling all the phone calls while the receptionist is at lunch. A patient calls and says he must have a prescription refill for Valium, an antidepressant medication, called in right away to his pharmacy, since he is leaving for the airport in thirty minutes. He says that Dr. Williams is a personal friend and always gives him a small supply of Valium when he has to fly. No one except Jerry is in the office at this time. What should he do? In this case study I am going to answer a few questions and give some advice to jerry. Jerry is just on call while Dr. Williams is away; even though he has had medical assisting and LPN training does not qualify him to refill the prescription. LPN’s do see patients while the Doctor is out but for prescriptions the doctor must authorize it. The fact that the medications are to make the patient comfortable while he is flying is not an urgent matter. If the situation were more impotant I could see where it would be hard for jerry to tell the patient he can’t refill him prescriptions; nevertheless he is not authorized. It would not make any difference if the medication was for high blood pressure or something that had to be taken daily, jerry is still not licensed to prescribe anything so his hands are completely tied in this situation...

Lateral Thinking

...British inventor Edward de Bono coined the phrase "lateral thinking" as a counterpoint to conventional or vertical thinking. In conventional thinking people go forward in a predictable, direct fashion. Lateral thinking involves approaching the problem from new directions – literally from the side. De Bono defines the four main aspects of lateral thinking as: The recognition of dominant polarizing ideas The search for different ways of looking at things A relaxation of the rigid control of vertical thinking The use of chance There are dominant ideas in every walk of life – the assumptions, rules and conventions that underpin systems and influence people's thinking and attitudes. The idea that the Earth was flat or that the Earth was the center of the universe are examples of dominant ideas that polarized thought along set lines. Once the dominant ideas are in place everything else is viewed in a way that supports them. A paranoid person sees every attempt to help them as malevolent and manipulating. Someone who believes in a conspiracy theory will explain away any inconvenient facts as deliberately constructed by the powers behind the conspiracy. Most organizations have dominant ideas that polarize their view of the world. It is easy for us to criticize the makers of horse-drawn carriages who thought automobiles were silly contraptions that would never catch on. People now, however, are also the captives of established ideas. A Technique for Lateral Thinking A lateral...

...Six Disciplines and Secrets to Successful Strategy Execution | Book Review | | Introduction: Gary Harpst was one of the founder and CEO of The Lord’s Business Inc.(TLB), aka Solomon Software, very popular software back in the 80's and early 90's when the PC industry was very young. He grew his business from startup to achieve great success, finally selling the company to Great Plains Software (since purchased by Microsoft) for a hefty sum (Bergin Tim, An Interview with GARY HARPST). Gary’s book, “Six Disciplines Execution Revolution: Solving the One Business Problem That Makes Solving All Other Problems Easier” was published in July 2008. In Six Disciplines Execution Revolution, Harpst details the elements of a complete strategy execution program, explains why it could only have happened now, and clarifies why such a program will become a mainstream requirement for successful small and midsized businesses in the future. Summary: According to Harpst, excellence is the enduring pursuit of balanced strategy and execution. Strategy requires choosing what promises to make to all stakeholders and a roadmap for delivering on those promises. Execution requires getting there, while overcoming unending surprises. Excellence is a journey – not a destination. A business excellence model tells organizations as to how they should operate relative to the two dimensions of strategy and execution. (See figure 1, Exhibit 1) Quadrant I: Strong Strategy/Weak Execution: In this quadrant...
