The story tells us about Gussy who works for Industrial Corporation as a caretaker. He is black one-legged man whose life is quite miserable: he has to support his elderly mother in spite of the fact that he is handicapped. But Gussy is rather satisfied with it and doesn't complain about anything. He likes his job and appreciates the fact he has it. However the company has just changed its hands and now everything is different here for Gussy. His new boss, mr. Blade, feels sorry for him and even intends to raise Gussy's salary. Meanwhile mrs. Blade comes to the office and makes her husband get rid of the black caretaker. Even though the news about increasing salary doesn't make Gussy feel comfortable among white people, still inspired and encouraged, Gussy is about to enter the boss's office not knowing that the news about increasing salary had already been transformed into firing him. Here we can see what the author wanted to point out in the story: Sometimes not only people's skin is white as snow but their hearts are also cold as ice. Through the first passages we can see an important problem which has been risen in the text: treating the black as inferior to the white.
The story takes place in southern outskirts of Port-of-Spain where a lot of black people are supposed to live. But despite this new bosses of the company which is now called The New Enterprises Company are all European businessmen which once again rises the problem of white&black relationships.
The story is told with the 3rd person narration; the author presents the characters in different ways: he is quite ironic about the new boss who's runs such a big company and is afraid of real life difficulties; his wife has a great influence on him; Gussy is shown sympathetically, the author is not indifferent to his life at all.
The story has no flashbacks, everything is told chronologically however...

Their stated strategy for “improving our market position or introducing a new product requires substantial advertising and promotional expenditures” (Vernon, 2013). Towards a Better Understanding of Social Entrepreneurship Some Important Distinctions Jerr Boschee and Jim McClurg Contents: • Introduction • Four Key Distinctions 1. The differences between “entrepreneurship” and “social entrepreneurship” 2. The differences between “sustainability” and “self-sufficiency” 3. The differences between “earned income strategies” and “social purpose business ventures” 4. The differences between “innovators”, “entrepreneurs” and “professional managers” • Some Final Thoughts • Social Enterprise Definition • Further Information Introduction “Social entrepreneurship” is one of the most misunderstood phrases in the non-profit sector today. Everybody, it seems, has a different definition of what it means. This is our attempt to bring some clarity to the discussion. Our perspective has been shaped by 50 years of experience in the field, one as head of a national consulting firm and the other as the chief executive officer of a US$ 15 million social enterprise. Twenty years ago the idea of non-profits acting in an entrepreneurial......

Writing the Essay

...Finding New York SUSANNAH GRIFFEE T he Port Authority, Central Park, subway stations, Broadway, Coney Island, Brooklyn Bridge, Downtown, Times Square, JFK: Colson Whitehead’s essays tunnel into the heart of New York City, revealing it to be both a bastion of cruelty and an alluring symbol of hope, both an executioner of dreams and a mother of new beginnings. Whitehead writes about the city as if it were human, and about its people as if they were buildings. Yet these personifications constantly interchange. Whitehead never represents living beings as wholly mechanical, or the city as wholly human. The key to this interchange lies in the way Whitehead projects his own reality upon the city, and his own multifaceted identity upon the legions of anonymous selves that populate the city’s streets. Whitehead’s constant creation and re-creation of characters and metaphors reveal a fear of being held to one identity, to one existence. And behind this urge to escape a solidified selfhood lies a desire to evade the confines of time, the inevitability of death. This yearning marks where our version of reality and Whitehead’s version overlap. It is the one immutable monument in a city of constantly shifting perceptions. From the very beginning, Whitehead dismantles the vision of New York as a glittering, perfect metropolis. He writes about New York as a complex force rather than a commercialized idea, as a being capable of doling out both salvation and destruction.......

Oprah Winfrey

...http://www.buzzle.com/editorials/2-3-2005-65287.asp Keynote Speakers   Top Motivational Speakers for Events in Singapore and Asia It is unbelievable the amount of influence that Oprah Winfrey has had over the lives of millions of people all over the world. She has become a demi-god in America. There are people who are ready to worship the ground over which she walks. She has lived the Great American dream, a veritable tale of rags to riches with the right amount of glamor added to it. Born in 1954 to unmarried parents, Oprah was raised by her grandmother on a farm with no indoor plumbing in Kosciusko, Mississippi. Oprah's childhood turned into a nightmare because of sexual abuse that she suffered. After suffering abuse and molestation, she ran away and was sent to a juvenile detention home at the age of 13. In 1968, at the age of 14 she gave birth to a premature baby who died soon after birth. An incident of this nature can devastate the entire life of a person. But Oprah Winfrey came out of it a stronger and fiercely determined individual. Her story is one of unrelenting focus and determination. Oprah's tryst with the world of entertainment began when at the age of three she began speaking in church. By the time she was a teenager Oprah was touring the churches of Nashville, reciting the sermons of James Weldon Johnson. Crowned Miss Fire Prevention in Nashville at 17, Winfrey visited a local radio station, where she was invited to read copy. She was so good that she......
