Chapter 4, “Closing Case Two” (Hacker Hunters, Pages 165-166)

1. What types of technology could big retailers use to prevent identity thieves from purchasing merchandise? They can use cards with RFID and Pin numbers.
2. What can organizations do to protect themselves from hackers looking to steal account data? They can restrict access to only those who need it, they can enhance their security measures by making their passwords more difficult so not everyone can access their databases, and they can install better higher quality firewall and security systems.
3. Authorities frequently tap online service providers to track down hackers. Do you think it is ethical for authorities to tap an online service provider and read people’s email? Why or why not? It is ethical for authorities and very important that they access to criminal activity that is being done via email or over the internet. With this authority there must be a warrant issued by a judge. It is unethical to access just anyone’s personal information looking for a crime without prior suspicion.
4. Do you think it was ethical for authorities to use one of the high-ranking officials to trap other gang members? Why or why not? I think it depends on the crime that has been done. Using a high-ranking official to trap other gang members has basically been a tradition that happens every day across America in all police departments. This is how cases are made and solved by finding witnesses to take down a criminal organization.
5. In a team, research the internet and find the best ways to protect yourself from identity theft. The best way to protect yourself from identity theft is to: monitor your credit report often, keep track of your bank and credit card statements, do not post any private information on social medial websites, shred any paper work with your personal information on it, never

A Humorous Wedding

...You giggled happily as your husband carefully tossed you onto his bed. Leonardo crawled on top of your pretty body, showering you with kisses. Leonardo had just become your husband about two months ago and you were filled with joy. Though it was true you two still lived in the lair, you were perfectly fine with it. There were times you wished you and your husband could be alone, Leo wished that for you and him as well, but it's not like you were complaining.  After the little giggle and kiss fest, you looked up at him. "I take it training went really well?" You asked, to which he chuckled. "Training was pretty casual, nothing new. If you're wondering why I'm so happy, it's because of you!" He began to playfully kiss your neck.  Leonardo...

...Adaptation Essay 04/08/2010 Adaptation of “Payback” and “Point Blank” to the Hunter Richard Stark’s novel “The Hunter” is about a guy name Parker who is seeking revenge after being left for dead by his partner and his wife. The novel entails the path of revenge that Parker seeks amongst his wife and partner. This novel has been adapted into the films “Point Blank” and “Payback.” Film adaptation is the transfer of printed work to a film, the novel being used as the basis of a film. John Bormann uses the novel as a blueprint that can be followed closely or completely changed to be traditional to his own vision for the film (Dick 276-289). The films “Payback” and “Point Blank” are a version of the Hunter, but not the actual version, there are many ways that the film maker’s “preserved the essence” of the novel. In the film “Point Blank,” Walker seeks his revenge after being betrayed by his partner Mal Reese and his wife, in a heist and Walker being left to die with bullet wounds. Walker being the central character in the film portrays a cold, ruthless man that will stop at nothing until he recovers the money that was stolen from him (Applegate). Parker the main character in “The Hunter” is also a ruthless man and also sought revenge against the ones who betrayed him. One example of this is in the novel, when the one guy who had betrayed him had protection of the mob since he used the money to get on the good graces of the crime organization, Parker took on the entire...

...the information to be stored and kept properly. It's also extremely important to protect computers from data loss, misuse and abuse. For example, businesses need to keep their information secure and shielded from hackers. Home users also need to ensure their credit card numbers are secure when participating in online transactions. A computer security risk is any action that could cause loss of information to software, data, processing incompatibilities or damage to computer hardware. An intentional breach in computer security is known as a computer crime, which is slightly different from a cybercrime. A cybercrime is known as illegal acts based on the Internet and is one of the FBI's top priorities. There are several distinct categories for people that perpetrate cybercrimes, and they are: hacker, cracker, cyberterrorist, cyberextortionist, unethical employee, script kiddie and corporate spy. A hacker is defined as someone who accesses a computer or computer network unlawfully. They often claim that they do this to find leaks in the security of a network. The term cracker refers to someone intentionally accessing a computer or computer network with malice in mind. They access computers with the intention of destroying or stealing information. Both crackers and hackers are having advanced network skills. A cyberterrorist is someone who uses a computer network or the Internet to destroy computer systems for political reasons. It’s similar to a terrorist attack because it requires...

...Certified Ethical Hacking - The 5 phases Every Hacker Must Follow The 5 Phases Every Hacker Must Follow Originally, to “hack” meant to possess extraordinary computer skills to extend the limits of computer systems. Hacking required great proficiency. However, today there are automated tools and codes available on the Internet that makes it possible for anyone with a will and desire, to hack and succeed. Mere compromise of the security of a system does not denote success. There are websites that insist on “taking back the net” as well as those who believe that they are doing all a favor by posting the exploit details. These can act as a detriment and can bring down the skill level required to become a successful attacker. The ease with which system vulnerabilities can be exploited has increased while the knowledge curve required to perform such exploits has shortened. The concept of the elite/super hacker is an illusion. However, hackers are generally intelligent individuals with good computer skills, with the ability to create and explore into the computer’s software and hardware. Their intention can be either to gain knowledge or to dig around to do illegal things. Attackers are motivated by the zeal to know more while malicious attackers would intend to steal data. In general, there are five phases in which an intruder advances an attack: 1. Reconnaissance 2. Scanning 3. Gaining Access 4. Maintaining Access 5. ...Pros and cons to hiring a hacker Nowadays, hackers are people that makes the technology's life to be more interesting. The term hacker has evolved over the years and has been growing. For years they existed a fuzzy distinction between good and bad computer hackers, or we also call them white hat and black hat hackers. Whether they are good or bad, we can't negate they don't have any influence on the development of technology. Hiring known hackers to test the security of a system is an example of this idea. Some companies have the great database which stores information about black hat hackers. It's made and developed by white hackers. These hackers break into systems and report holes that company engineers quickly seal. Companies need to have appropriate way to choose hackers to hire. Another positive aspect to hiring reformed hackers as security consultants is that staying up with the latest security exploits and countermeasures is a full time job. In most companies, the IT staff has an acceptable level of security knowledge, but they must focus most of their attention on the day to day responsibilities of keeping the network up and running. A good security consultant focuses almost solely on security and consequently has a level of security knowledge that goes far beyond that of most other IT professionals. The Cons of hiring so-called good hackers can be minimized by following several basic rules, but the use of hackers with criminal records is not common. With...

...term “hacker” they think of an evil person committing crimes by hacking into their computers to steal, destroy and/or steal identities. This is so in some cases, but not all hackers are bad. Hackers are merely curious technically skilled individuals who gain unauthorized access to computers, networks of various companies, organizations and individuals. Good hackers are considered white hat hackers. They are the ones, who are hired to break into systems as a way of testing the vulnerabilities and security issues that may be present in the computer system. Consider this: company XYZ, a mid-sized corporation, is in the middle of satisfying their regulatory compliance needs.  The manager of security at the company has been tasked by the CIO (Chief Information Officer) to report on the company’s current security posture. If the manager decided to outsource an ethical or white hat hacker in attempt to test their security measures. ...explain what they are and how they are different. Do you consider white hat hacking essential? Why or why not? I don’t really know much about hacking. From what I’ve read is that A white hat hacker breaks security for non-malicious reasons, perhaps to test their own security system or while working for a security company which makes security software. The term "white hat" in Internet slang refers to an ethical hacker. This classification also includes individuals who perform penetration tests and vulnerability assessments within a contractual agreement. The EC-Council, also known as the International Council of Electronic Commerce Consultants, is one of those organizations that have developed certifications, courseware, classes, and online training covering the diverse arena of ethical hacking. A "black hat" hacker is a hacker who "violates computer security for little reason beyond maliciousness or for personal gain" (Moore, 2005).[9] Black hat hackers form the stereotypical, illegal hacking groups often portrayed in popular culture, and are "the epitome of all that the public fears in a computer criminal".[10] Black hat hackers break into secure networks to destroy, modify, or steal data; or to make the network unusable for those who are authorized to use the network. Black hat hackers are also referred to as the "crackers" within the security industry and by modern programmers.
