Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere. This country is made of Religion which eighty percent of Haitians are Catholic. Over time effects of Haiti evolved such as Diseases that are common in Haiti which is why the orphanage percentage is extremely high. Only about ten percent of children who were enrolled in elementary grow up to go to high school in which can be successful . This country has the highest percentage than any other country of orphanage. Just a little over half of Haitians can read and write while the others are illiterate. The Literate population makes up only fifty two percent. Another significant role in Haiti is the popular sport of Soccer; this is commonly played in the country. Haitians will always be remembered for this horrific time. The time of the Haitian Massacre started in 1804. A brutal dictator named Rafael Trujillo murdered many Haitians. Primary where the border was which was between Haiti and The Dominican Republic is where tragedies happened. Among the borders people were slaughtered. “There were at least nine thousand to eighteen thousand people killed.” (“Border”). Most Haitians that were killed were african american. “The Haitian Massacre is also known as the Parsley Massacre because the soldiers of the Dominican Republic carried around Parsley and asked Haitians to pronounce the spanish word for it.” This Spanish word could have cost them their lives. Initially most Haitians could not pronounce the word in spanish which gave themselves away. More than nine thousand Haitians were killed by the Dominican. The bodies were dumped in the Massacre River (“The Massacre”). The other nine thousand people that were killed were non …show more content…
“On May, 16 a group of survivors of the horrible Massacre fought for justice.” This was a fourteen year fight in which the group were eventually awarded four hundred thousand dollars. The money was split between the group of people. The progress of the fight for justice helped boot and establish Democracy for Haiti.( "Institute”). This was a very scarce battle that was fought in court. According to anonymous author of “The First days of the Slave Insurrection” as known as an eyewitness, experienced a terrifying moment in the Haiti Genocide. The author explains how terrifying and scared he was at the moment his house was broken into. He felt the fear of dying. Men went around shooting others ("Facing”).
