Halloween: The Stereotypes Of American Indian Culture

Halloween tends to be a U.S holiday in which American Indians are repeatedly depicted in offensive ways. Costumes of American Indians on Halloween contain many similarities to the costumes of those of individuals who “played Indian.” Like the costumes put on by children, teenagers, and adults every Halloween claiming to portray an Indian identity, Lewis Henry Morgan and the other society members played Indian and took part in “yet another reinvention and dramatic appropriation of Indianness” (Deloria 94). Halloween costumes continue to reenact “stereotypes of Indigenous Peoples as a much-distorted, monolithic culture” (Robertson). The stereotypes and tropes continually reenacted in these “authentic” American Indian costumes are feathered headdresses, …show more content…
Images of the costume quickly circulated on social media, and the couple was met with a wave of criticism. Individuals on Twitter responded to the costume with Tweets stating “Apologize for your disgusting costume & to Native people of this land who continue their struggle to be seen, heard & respected” or commenting that the costume choice was “ignorant and incredibly disappointing” (Britton). I agree with those who are angered by the couple’s costume. Not only is the costume insensitive given the events at Standing Rock, but Duff’s boyfriend is donning a stereotypical Indian costume of a feather headdress, red war paint, and fringed suede clothing. Although the couple later apologized on social media, their assumption that the costume was harmless and appropriate shows how little society has come in eradicating the racism and dehumanization of American Indians.
A second incredibly offensive Halloween costume is that of two young women pictured below. The two women are wearing stereotypical feathers in their hair and as earrings, one has a braid, and both have headbands going across their foreheads. They are holding beer cans and are portraying “water pertecters,” likely misspelling words on purpose to reference American Indian unemployment. Not only are they mocking and disrespecting Natives, but they are making light of the terrible arrests and attacks happening at the #NODAPL protests

...The geography of the UK. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated on the British Isles in the north west of Europe and is separated from the mainland by the English Channel and the Strait of Dover. Also the country is washed by the North Sea, the Irish Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The coastline is deeply indented and it gives a good supply of splendid harbours for ships. In the north you can find the Cheviots separating England from Scotland, the Pennines going down England like a backbone and the Cambrian Mountains which occupy the greatest part of Wales. The highest peak is Ben Nevis which is situated in the Highlands of Scotland. The south-eastern part of England is a low-lying land with gentle hills and a coast which is regular in outline with occasional chalk cliffs. The rivers in Britain are of little value as waterways. The longest are the Severn, the Thames, the Clyde and the Bristol Avon. There are a lot of lakes in the UK for example in the Lake District in the northern part of England but the most famous lake is Loch Ness in Scotland. Great Britain is rich in coal, iron ore and oil. Such crops as wheat, sugar-beet, potatoes and others are grown in this country. The main cities are London, Bristol, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast. The geography of the USA. A minority is defined not by being outnumbered but by five characteristics: unequal treatment, distinguishing physical or cultural traits, involuntary membership, awareness of subordination, and ingroup marriage. Subordinate groups are classified in terms of race, ethnicity, religion, and gender. The social importance of race is derived from a process of racial formation; any biological significance is relatively unimportant to society...

American Holidays

...American Holidays The following are holidays that we celebrate in the United States: New Years Eve and New Years Day New Years Day is the first day of the year, January 1st. it is a celebration of the old year and the new one to come. People make New Years Resolutions each New Years and promise themselves that they will keep this resolution until next year. New Years Eve is a major social event. Clubs everywhere are packed with party-goers who stay out all night and go nuts at midnight. At midnight it is a tradition to make lots of noise. The traditional New Years Ball is dropped every year in Times Square in New York City at 12 o’clock. This event can be seen all over the world on television. Valentine’s Day Saint Valentine’s Day is a day that is set aside to promote the idea of “love”. It is celebrated on February 14th. It is celebrated on Sunday between March 22 and April 25. The 40 days leading up to Easter are observed as Lent. ...IGOROTS * Home * IGOROT SONGS * IGOROT DANCE * IGOROT TRADITIONS * MONEY ON THE MOUNTAIN IGOROT TRADITIONS IGOROT TRADITIONS When we talk about Igorot identity and culture, we also have to consider the time. My point is that: what I am going to share in this article concerning the Igorot culture might not be the same practiced by the Igorots of today. It has made variations by the passing of time, which is also normally happening to many other cultures, but the main core of respect and reverence to ancestors and to those who had just passed is still there. The Igorot culture that I like to share is about our practices and beliefs during the "time of Death". Death is part of the cycle of life. Igorots practice this part of life cycle with a great meaning and importance. Before the advent of Christianity in the Igorotlandia, the Igorots or the people of the Cordilleran region in the Philippines were animist or pagans. Our reverence or the importance of giving honor to our ancestors is a part of our daily activities. We consider our ancestors still to be with us, only that they exist in another world or dimension. Whenever we have some special feasts (e.g., occasions during death, wedding, family gathering, etc.), when we undertake something special (like going somewhere to look for a job or during thanksgiving), we perform some special offer. We call this "Menpalti/ Menkanyaw", an act of butchering and offering animals. During these times we call them...

Manager

...Learning with Cases INTRODUCTION The case study method of teaching used in management education is quite different from most of the methods of teaching used at the school and undergraduate course levels. Unlike traditional lecture-based teaching where student participation in the classroom is minimal, the case method is an active learning method, which requires participation and involvement from the student in the classroom. For students who have been exposed only to the traditional teaching methods, this calls for a major change in their approach to learning. This introduction is intended to provide students with some basic information about the case method, and guidelines about what they must do to gain the maximum benefit from the method. We begin by taking a brief look at what case studies are, and how they are used in the classroom. Then we discuss what the student needs to do to prepare for a class, and what she can expect during the case discussion. We also explain how student performance is evaluated in a case study based course. Finally, we describe the benefits a student of management can expect to gain through the use of the case method. WHAT IS A CASE STUDY? There is no universally accepted definition for a case study, and the case method means different things to different people. Consequently, all case studies are not structured similarly, and variations abound in terms of style, structure and approach. Case material ranges from small caselets (a few paragraphs...
