Halo Error

...Saari 08 Fall Halo Errors in Performance Management Systems - Anita Rajendran Performance Appraisals are the backbone of Human Resources and a crucial aspect of the entire Performance Management System (PMS) but also the most difficult to implement. The effectiveness of a Performance Appraisal can be seriously impacted by the common errors that raters make. Halo is one such error and can be defined as "the influence of a global evaluation on individual attributes of a person" (Nisbett & Wilson, 1977, p. 250) or "the influence of a rater's general impression on ratings of specific ratee qualities" (Lance, LaPointe, & Stewart, 1994, p. 339). The article tries to understand the background and research done into halo error and whether there is clear evidence to suggest that there is a positive or negative link to rating accuracy due to Halo error. It attempts to see if there are ways in which an organization can effectively utilize these research findings to counter halo error or whether any experiments done are effective only in a laboratory setting. Finally review on whether this aspect of the performance appraisal can be incorporated into an actual performance appraisal system. Halo Effect

... The Halo effect Mr. Yegrrrrn Dennohrr Sasha College 24/05/2014 The halo effect The phenomenon which occurs when an individual judges a person and decides on his likability based on his specific traits. The occurrence of the halo effect is best described in an instance where a movie star or a musician often portrayed not only as being attractive but also likable. An so based on these qualities, most individuals tend to think that they also are friendly, cheerful, have a good personality and so on and so forth. (Thorndike, 1920, p. 25-29). In trying to find an explanation to this phenomenon, theorists identified the socio-cultural theory which plays a major role in explaining this phenomenon. The socio-cultural theory provides an explanation on how social interaction and cultural interaction affects what the mind perceives. It is clear that the mind plays a very important role in the halo effect since it is the one that determines likability. (Efran, 1974, p. 45–54) In this document, in-depth discussions on halo effect are going to be looked into, from the writers opinion, the concept of the halo effect can be generally categorized under the attribute of likability. In other words people make judgments based on the qualities one is attracted to for example people like people who are intelligent, skillful, attractive, among others. Basically it is all about likability of a person, a product or a service. Some of the personal experiences on the halo effect are discussed......

This modern ballad has been covered by many artists through the years. This song really stands out because of the difference in the artist’s genre. This is a perfect example of an artist taking a song and transforming into a work of art. Composed by lead vocalist from One Republic, Ryan Tedder, Evan “Kidd” Bogart and Beyoncé Knowles. The singer Ray LaMontagne was the main inspiration for "Halo". Evan “Kidd” Bogart suggested they create a song in the style of Ray LaMontagne’s “Shelter" for Beyoncé Knowles and her husband Jay-Z, and proposed the title "Halo". After hearing Ryan Tedder play "angelic" chords, they wrote the song in three hours. The song was composed to be a ballad that shows insecurities about love. Beyoncé’s version of "Halo" is a contemporary down tempo power ballad that features an R&B and pop production. It has elements of gospel and soul music. The instruments used in this piece are a piano, a keyboard, drums, a synthesizer, strings, and percussion instruments. The cascading piano work is accompanied by percussive beats that alternate between handclaps and foot stomps. "Halo" was......

...Global Product Quality and Corporate Social Responsibility Perceptions: A Cross-National Study of Halo Effects Thomas J. Madden, Martin S. Roth, and William R. Dillon ABSTRACT Attribute ratings often contain a holistic or global impression of the brand, commonly referred to as “halo.” A halo response can occur when perceptions of a brand’s performance on an attribute are influenced by performance percep- tions on another attribute or by a global impression of the brand. Using cross-national survey data from consumers in Argentina, China, Spain, and the United States, the authors examine the extent to which a halo response introduces bias to product quality and corporate social responsibility perceptions of competing brands. The findings show that halo is more pervasive for product quality than for corporate social responsibility associations, varies across brands and markets, and is strongly related to brand recommendations. Examining cross-national brand performance and halo perceptions can help international marketing managers understand key perceptual similarities and differences between and across markets, which can inform strategic considerations such as whether to pursue global, panregional, or national branding, positioning, and advertising strategies. Keywords: constrained components analysis, associative network models, automatic activation theory, branding and brand management, marketing standardization/adaptation, corporate social responsibility The......

...Commercial IT security solutions / products 1. Executive overview Three commercial IT security products are evaluated to solve the issue of cloud computing service security; including SmartCryptor, Trend Micro SecureCloud, and CloudPassage Halo. These three products were selected because they contain the similar features to protect the hacker or data lose on the cloud network. The features of their products are compared and contrasted to identify the most benefits to the users. I set the selection criteria including cost, features, how to use, security level, and company-fit. The CloudPassage Halo products shows the most powerful products, however, I found many features are duplicated to the network security features that may implemented together with the servers. The cost is considered high. I recommended the Trend Micro SecureCloud with powerful encryption algorithm (AES –standard) and be controlled by policy –driven KEY that can self-adjust to any organisation. The price is reasonable with their features. Moreover, in small company who uses the third-party cloud service, SmartCryptor is chosen as very budget (just $6/months), the use can add another level of security in file encryption and do not worry that others will access your file. To sum up, every products has their own advantage and disadvantage, the way of product selection should consider what we really need, the product feature is solve the problem, and the price should be reasonable. 2. ...Abstract Halo effect on any research project can skew the results of the best designed research project. Failure to account for or anticipate some level of halo effect and to place corrective measures in place may lead to a false conclusion on the research being studied. This literary review discusses the halo effect on instructors grading students, students evaluating their professors’ instruction along with their nonverbal movements. Also discussed are the effects ADHD and ODD can have on teachers who are observing children involved in a scripted act, unknown to the teachers, and how the halo effect might cloud their review of the child being observed and graded on their behavior. Introduction The effects of what is called the “halo effect” and how it relates to grading of student projects and ratings of their disruptive disorders can have dramatic effects on the finding of research project and diagnosis’ of patients. Halo effect is properly defined as: The halo effect is the systematic bias that the rater introduces by carrying over a generalized impression of the subject from one rating to another. An instructor expects the student who does well on the first question of an examination to do well on the second. You conclude a report is good because you like its form, or you believe someone is intelligent because you agree with him or her. Halo is especially difficult to avoid when the property being studied is not clearly defined, is not easily observed, is not......

Factors That Distort Performance Appraisal

...this cause of distortion is that it can stifle innovation in a company, as "different" people must struggle to rise in the ranks. Leniency * Leniency, sometimes referred to as inflation, is the tendency of evaluators to give employees higher marks than deserved across the board, usually because of the desire to avoid conflicts. The issue with this distortion cause is that a person's qualifications and successes are misrepresented, with sometimes undeserving individuals getting pay raises and other perks. Related to this concept is the tendency of evaluators to use "central tendency," scoring all employees at roughly the same level. Halo and Devil Effects * The halo and devil effects refer to the first impression an evaluator has of an employee. If the first impression is good, the evaluator looks at the employee through a "halo" lens, viewing the employee's work as good overall, even if it is not. If the first impression is poor, the evaluator may score the employee lower than is deserved. Attributional Bias * Attributional bias occurs when two or more employees have achieved the same level or goal. It assumes that even though the levels or goals are the same, the employees aren't necessarily deserving of the same rating based on various factors, or attributions. These attributions can be things like medical issues, stress, IQ or social skills. Affective Reaction * ------------------------------------------------- Affective reaction is bias......

Beans and Disease

...White mold is caused by the fungus Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and develops as a white cottony growth on the stem, stem branches and pods of bean plants (photos 1, 2). The fungus also produces black, hard mats of mycelium (called sclerotia) near these cottony growths (photo 3). Sclerotia allow the organism to survive adverse (winter) conditions. The disease cycle starts when the leaf canopy covers the row spaces and when the soil surface is cool but moist enough for the sclerotia to germinate (photo 4). Soil conditions of near field water holding capacity for ten to fourteen days and temperatures between 59-65 degrees F favor sclerotia germination. Upon germination, small mushroom-like bodies called apothecia appear on the soil surface. Spores are produced by the apothecia and infect wilted flowers or other dead plant tissue, later spreading to living plant tissue. Infection kills some plants and severely reduces the yield of plants with pod infections (photos 5, 6). High humidity and plant canopy temperatures between 68 and 76 degrees F favor the spread of this disease. Crop rotation helps prevent build up of inoculum. A rotation of three to four years between susceptible crops is necessary to accomplish this. Sunflower, potato, canola, mustard, and soybeans should not be grown in close rotation with edible beans because they are susceptible. Small grains and corn are recommended in a rotation with edible beans because they are not susceptible. The use of bean......
