People often use appearances and forms of deceit to achieve. When the situation is uncontrollable, one will do what they can to make one feel like there is less of a chance of provoking unfortunate events. The characters of the play Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, are willing to use any means of trickery to selfishly fulfill their own quota, even if that means abusing the trust of others. Presentation in terms of physique, actions, and words; twisted or unspoken, are all methods taken by the characters no matter the consequence for self-satisfaction.
Physical appearance is used to make one look a certain way to prove something. Even when there is physical proof of one’s feelings, it does not reflect what is truly felt. When Hamlet is questioned …show more content…
In order to preserve reputation, people mirror their behaviour and thoughts to portray a type of person contrary to reality. As Laertes advises Ophelia to stay away from Hamlet, he states, “The chariest maid is prodigal enough if she unmask her beauty to the moon.” (1.3.36-37). Ophelia must reject Hamlet despite her love for him to hold her image to the public. Claudius makes an effort to pray to suppress the guilt he has for committing his crime despite not sincerely feeling repentance. “My words fly up, my thoughts remain below. Words without thoughts never to heaven go.” (3.3.97-98). Even though he tries, Claudius is unable to free himself of his culpability as he knows that he cannot fool higher power. As a result of Hamlet’s madness, he is able to create an excuse for speaking ill of someone. “How say you by that? Still harping on my daughter. Yet he knew me not at first. He said I was a fishmonger. He is far gone, far gone.” (2.2.97-99). Hamlet convinces Polonius that Hamlet is going mad and that his nonsensical way of speaking is dismissed. Claudius acts happy about his marriage to conceal the fact that he is constantly on edge on account of his murder. “Good Hamlet, cast thy nighted color off, And let thine eye look like a friend on Denmark. Do not forever with thy vailèd lids Seek for thy noble father in the dust.”(1.2.68-71). Both Claudius and Hamlet are concerned with king Hamlet’s death; …show more content…
Characters betray one another to attain something more valuable than their relationships. “You should not have believed me, for virtue cannot so inoculate our old stock but we shall relish of it. I loved you not.” (3.1.117-119). Hamlet pours a countless amount of time with Ophelia or dedicating letters to her and decides that they are of less significance than his revenge. Rather than admitting this, he states that he never loved her so not to reveal his plans and to avoid distractions. He not only disregards the emotions of Ophelia, but also favours propelling his agenda instead with the intent to cause harm. Lies are told to deceive others and invoke vulnerability to assert dominance. “So the whole ear of Denmark Is by a forged process of my death Rankly abused.” (1.5.36-38). Claudius lying about the death of king Hamlet put the state of Denmark in a state of both loss and need for a new king. After having distanced himself from suspicions and made his presence known as the previous king’s brother, he is seen fit for being the new king. While allowing power to fall into his hands, Claudius also makes himself a dishonest man, despite appearing as hope for the kingdom to continue as prosperously as it had previously under the reign of Hamlet’s father. By demanding Guildenstern to do something as simple as playing an instrument, Hamlet

Wfm - Deceptive Marketing

...Deceptive Marketing Deceptive Marketing Marketing is a well-known strategy that most, if not all, businesses use to create awareness of the products or services that they are offering to customers. Our textbook defines marketing as, “the process by which companies create value for customers and build strong customer relationships in order to capture value from customers in return” (Armstrong & Kotler, 2012, p. 5). However, some companies have taken advantage of its effectiveness to deceive customers. This paper will delve into the Whole Foods marketing deception. Whole Foods Market (WFM) is one of the most popular food markets in the United States. As its name suggests, it is supposed to sell foods that have undergone little or no processing or refinement and have no added ingredients. The stores used to have a very large logo on the side of the building saying, “Nothing Artificial, Ever!” Perhaps this is one of the biggest factors that led to their popularity, because most people shop at Whole Foods Market because of the health benefits associated with them. In October 2012, a controversial video was released exposing WFM. The video had evidence that WFM had been selling genetically modified (GM) foods to the public without their knowledge. The video shows customers who regularly shop at WFM that had been under the impression that the food there was completely organic. In an interview, they expressed their shock and dismay when they discovered that they had been...

Consumers

...The rise of mercantile capitalism and the industrial revolution has made village consumerism irrelevant. Products were once less complicated due to the local nature of industry with the idea of caveat emptor “let the buyer beware” and laissez faire (no govt intervention) these are now outdated due to manufacturers engaging in deceptive conduct. This lead to the need for law reform. Consumer laws objective was to remedy the imbalance between manufacturer and consumer and reflect the moral and ethical standards of society. The following essay will evaluate the effectiveness of the legal responses which protect consumers with regards to occupational licensing, implied terms, marketing and advertising, exclusion causes, and unfair contracts. A contract is a legally binding agreement. Every consumer transaction is a contract. A contract for goods and services is the main consumer contract; it involves one party (the supplier) supplying goods or a service to another party (consumer) in exchange for money. Contracts are governed under the Trade Practices Amendment (Australian Consumer Law) Act 2010 (Cwlth). The terms of a contract include express terms and implied terms. Implied terms are terms which apply automatically to any contract and don’t have to be stated within the contract. Implied terms include the requirement that the goods supplied: are of acceptable quality, are fit for the purpose of their use, and correspond to any sample shown by the supplier. Implied terms are effective...

Placebo Effect

...The `Placebo Effect' was defined by Wolf as "any effect attributable to a pill, potion or procedure but not to it's pharmacodynamic or specific properties" (Wolf, 1959. Cited by H.Brody, 1980). To date, the placebo has played a dynamic role throughout the history and development of medicine. Substances with no perceivable pharmacological benefit such as spiders, crocodile dung and human excrement have been prescribed up until the beginning of modern scientific medicine to treat various maladies. Obviously each of these substances induced a `Placebo Effect' in order to achieve the desired result as the treatment itself had no real medical value. However, as the medical sciences developed further, the incredible power of the placebo effect was anything but discredited - the power of the human mind in it's self-healing was deemed by clinicians as `voluminous'. It is quite profound, for instance, how a patient will commonly react much better when they are administered with a placebogenic injection as opposed to a lesser response from a tablet or capsule. This infers that the reaction received will vary in proportion to how potent the patient feels their treatment really is; obviously with the injection seeming to be the most potent agent. It is in conjunction with these hypotheses that the therapeutic sciences such as psychotherapy are formulated. It is also through the application of various forms of these `insight therapies' (communication therapy) that the use...

Leadership and Self Deception

...Leadership and Self Deception Introduction From personal experience, nobody ever wants to hear that they have a problem in any aspect of their life. The truth is painful to hear. I know that I’m very critical of myself and I am able to accept it from myself. By nature, we as individuals aren’t as accepting to listen to someone else tell us that we have a problem or that we are the problem. Sometimes listening to someone tell you that you have a problem can really throw you off your game. In your mind, you are thinking…yeah right, I don’t have a problem, tssk tssk, what are you talking about? Your natural instinct is to disagree and get defensive, maybe your eyes twitch, your heart beats really fast and you break out in a sweat, whatever it is…you likely deny that you have a problem. Philosophers call this self deception, being in the box where you resist any suggestion that there is a problem. Self deception is most common in organizations and is the most damaging. Others looking at you give you a different perspective of yourself. You yourself may never see that there are any issues. When we aren’t recognizing there is a problem, we tend to be blind to the truth. If we are close minded in acknowledging there is a problem, any approach to find a solution will make matters worse. Self deception is so fundamental to leadership because leadership is about making matters better. We undermine our leadership at every aspect if we perceive that we are never the problem...

Security and Loss Prevention

...KRISTI SCOTT SECURITY AND LOSS PREVENTION AMERICAN INTERCONTINENTAL UNIVERSITY ABSTRACT This paper is information on preventing acts of fraud against corporate executives and the preventive measures that can be used for that purpose. Probably the most important step in protecting against fraud is to start with the top executives to set the tone for not tolerating any type of fraud within the company. A great way to start is by educating the employees of the company in ways of detecting different types of fraud because the employees can be, by far, the best line of defense against fraud for the company as well as the top executives. Another effective but rarely used method is to have surprise audits. Surprise audits can be very successful in detecting fraud before it gets out of control. Probably the most important benefit of surprise audits is preventing fraud by creating the perception that fraud will be detected. Check and double check employee backgrounds. This means, that companies should confirm all work history and education listed in any potential employee’s or executive’s resumes as well as following up with all references listed also. Any undisclosed or misleading information should be considered a red flag. The same scrutiny should be used to screen new and existing executives, suppliers, customers, and any business partners. With the help of an outside source such as the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners for example. I believe that creating...

The importance for me to have white teeth will not repair my life, cause me to be a different person, or earn me a certificate. The truth of the matter is it will not restrict me from purchasing items that will provide whiting for my teeth. Ethicist Problem

...“My Response to the Ethicist Problem” The writer has been asked to go speed dating with his friend but, is in a relationship. He wants to know if accompanying his friend would be wrong because he is not single, due to the fact that the rules state you must be single. Mr. London states that in technical terms, he is single. Basically he just wants to know if it is wrong to lie and deceive the fact that he is not single and already has a partner. The ethicist starts by says that being single, as he understands, means not merely unmarried but also unattached. By saying that, he is saying that the writer is not single. The speed daters are trying to meet someone to find companionship and the ethicist feels the writer cannot offer that. Going to this event would be extremely deceptive towards everyone there. So not going is the right thing to do but there seems to be one other option for the writer. That is to ask his partner for permission to go with his friend. Possibly to accompany him or, just to know if it is wrong or not to clear his mind of the issue. Asking a question like that to your partner should be presented with a preplanned apology if she takes it the wrong way. I feel the writer should not go with his friend. He says himself that he is a relationship and is happy. Why chance ruining something good in your life? Maybe if he was accompanying his brother or someone else in his family it may be different. But, his friend shouldn’t try to take him to an event...

Ethics Paper

...Akua Watkins Interpersonal Communication Dr. Douglas Marshall March 13, 2014 Ethics Think Paper News to you: A lie is a form of deception, but deception is not considered a lie. A lie is meant to deceive a statement so the statement appears to seem true. Although humans are programmed to tell the truth, everyone has told a lie to stay out of trouble. Holden’s Problem Is Not ‘Phonies’ but His Inability to Accept Reality.” Do You Agree?

...Holden’s problem is not ‘phonies’ but his inability to accept reality.” Do you agree? Holden Caulfield main problem is with all the phonies that surround him and irk him. Reading extensively through the novel; we can confirm that Holden throughout the book is continuously tormented by the acts of these phonies who are superficial and hypocritical. Throughout the novel Holden meets various phonies who commit phony acts. One such case is when he first arrived at the Edmont Hotel and he saw these couples squirting highballs water at each other. Another case is of him witnessing another phony act is when he goes on a date with Sally Hayes but they bump into one of Sally’s phony friend, George. This part of the book really highlights Holden’s main problem with phonies and this part killed me. It really did. The way phonies will interact with each other that is. The main problem that Holden finds with the meeting between George and Sally though is how he casually intrudes on their date and then doing what phonies do he has a phony conversation with Sally and then afterwards he finally leaves only so he can meet a couple of phonies over cocktails. The way they talk to each other and even what they talked about was pretty phony too; how they both acted like they were genuinely interested in each other and what people they knew and didn’t care about who lived at specific places. It really killed me. This also reminds me of another phony moment in the novel such as when Holden goes...

Whe Do We Lie

...The 2009 movie "The Invention of Lying" depicted a world completely devoid of falsehoods. Everyone tells the completeand honest truth all the time, and everything a person says is taken at face value. The premise is humorous because it's so contrary to the world we live in. Can you imagine telling someone you were breaking up with him because of his looks? Or admitting to your boss that you'd read his private e-mails? What about confessing to the days that you're so depressed you stay in bed crying? We don't do that in polite society. If we break up with someone, we tend to think of courteous ways to put it, and if someone asks how we're doing, we respond that we're fine, when in actuality, we'd like to go home and spend quality time with our favorite liquor. In other words, we lie. But why? Why are we so deceitful when we claim with that we value honesty in our interpersonal relationships? To some extent, we can be proud of our lies. Lying is considered a sign of intelligence and cognitive skill, because it takes some aptitude to recognize the way things are and then create and present an alternative to that reality. And it's a skill that we exercise quite a bit; in a study published in the Journal of Basic andApplied Psychology, researchers found that 60 percent of the subjects lied at least once during a videotaped 10-minute conversation [source: Lloyd]. Researchers reported that all the subjects believed they'd been completely truthful during the conversation, so when they...
