Head versus Heart
Hard Times shows the inadequacy of an approach to life that emphasizes only the human intellect at
the expense of the imagination and the heart. The character who most embodies the false approach is
Thomas Gradgrind. Gradgrind worships facts and figures and prides himself on being very practical. He
thinks that the only things valuable in life are those that can be objectively measured. He believes
that human behavior can be shaped for the better by the rational application of practical knowledge.
Gradgrind refuses to accept the validity of "fancy" or imagination; only practical things matter, and
he puts his faith in abstract theories rather than direct observation of how real people behave, and
what their real needs are. In his satirical portrait of Gradgrind, Dickens is taking aim at what he
saw as the underlying principles operating in the industrial England of his time. It was a lop-sided
approach to human life that denied some of the basic needs of human beings.
|The qualities of imagination and heart are found in the circus folk that Gradgrind despises. Sissy

...Theme Park Development Costs: Initial Investment Cost Per First Year Attendee – A Historic Benchmarking Study Kelly T. Kaak Rosen College of Hospitality Management University of Central Florida ABSTRACT There is an industry “rule of thumb” that when planning for the construction of a theme park, developers should anticipate investing $100 per expected first-year guest. In other words, if the goal is to attract a million paying guests per year, the total investment needs to equal $100,000,000. This ratio is quite common in the literature, but it has never been investigated formally. This study collected the initial investment costs of 52 parks built in the United States, converted that investment into modern dollars, and then divided that dollar cost by the first-year attendance figures. The overall mean or average among the subject parks was $109.61 invested per first-year guest. This figure is very close to the industry “rule of thumb” of investing $100 in construction costs for every desired first-year guest Keywords: theme park, development costs, attendance INTRODUCTION There is an industry “rule of thumb” that when planning for the construction of a theme park, developers should anticipate investing $100 per expected first-year guest. Crash

...Crash Movie Analysis Anjelica McCartney HUM/150 January 18, 2016 Victor Armenta Crash Movie Analysis Discrimination, racism, classism, prejudice and more plague today’s society. These horrible issues do not affect one race, sexes, class, ethnicity, or age group; these issues affect all races, both genders, all ethnicities, and all age groups. For this film analysis, I have chosen to discuss the racism portrayed throughout a three-time Oscar award winning movie called Crash. Summary Paul Haggis wrote, directed and produced the film Crash in 2004. The movie Crash interweaves several individuals in Los Angeles over a two-day period. The film shows how a variety of different ethnic characters crosses paths during this period, and it displays their personal experiences involving racism. The movie shows how some are victims of racism as well as how some are guilty of racism against others as well as themselves. ‘Some movies, though, are told very much from the protagonist’s point of view, and the audience needs to go inside of the character’s head, to see the world of the story as the character sees it and feel what they feel’ (Diamond, 2012). Crash will take you there. Characters The movie Crash does not have simply one or two main characters but several. The casting directors, Sarah Finn, and Randi Hiller, carefully selected a magnificent cast to portray the characters in this film. The main characters in this movie include; an African American detective named Graham...

Prove the importance of these themes with examples from the novel. One theme in Samurai shortstop is the theme of challenging the status quo. Throughout the book, Toyo had been taught Bushido, the way of the warrior to understand his Uncles Koji’s death. One scene where he was confused was when Fuji (Yoshiko Fujimura) had told him that his family was not from samurai class and that Besuboru (Baseball) is not a Samurai game but everyone who had played Sumo...

...Written Your textual analysis provides the background for an essay, and account or a text in another genre you are asked to write about a text. You should only use results from the analysis, which are relevant for the focus you have chosen. Novels | Short stories | A novel is a literary imaginative work whose content has been invented in an author’s imagination. It does not represent actuality and it is seldom based on facts.Novels and short stories are fiction. | A short story belongs to the genre fiction. It is epic and it tells a story in just one main plot. Often: * Exposition (eksponering, udstilling, redegørelse) * Complication * Crisis * Sad/happy/open/surprising ending.A short story is often restricted (begrænset) to one setting only; fixed place and time and narrow (snæver, smal) social surroundings. There is a limited set of characters in a short story. A decisive (afgørende) situation beyond a character’s control occurs (forekommer, opstår) and the story starts. A short story only discusses a selected part of life. Therories

...A. Expressive Theory Formerly “Expressionism” is a German movement in painting but later on, it extended its access to other literary arts too. Expressive criticism treats a literary work primarily in relation to the author. It defines poetry as an expression, or overflow, or utterance of feeling, or as the products of poet’s feelings. The theory tends to judge the work by its sincerity to the poets’ vision or the state of mind. Such views were developed mainly by the Romantic critics and remain current in our time too. Wordsworth’s definition of poetry as “the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings recollected in tranquility” is taken as the ground idea of the expressive theory of art. The most powerful impetus in expressive critical thought was the Romantic Movement that began in late eighteenth century. This movement has deeply affected our modern consciousness and the common sense discourse of literary commentary. The three key concepts associated with this movement are: imagination, genius and emotion. Expressive theorists firmly stick to these three key terms. They believe that authorial individuality is something to be conveyed by a literary work, and to go beyond objectivist theorists’ prescription that a poet’s effort should be to flee personality and that criticism should focus on the poem not on the poet. Wordsworthian notion that “a poem is inner made outer” puts an emphasis on the poet in a poem, and this emphasis has never eased. B. Objective Theory ...

Karen Gould Collection: A Narrative Analysis

...During the class expedition to the Karen Gould Collection at the Spenser Art Reference Library, I was entranced by piece labeled "no 3". This piece from the late 15th century resonated with my fascination of the union between scholasticism and theology. Furthermore, this artifact provides a glimpse into how individuals analyzed the Bible and interpreted its meaning. This paper will discuss the physical characteristics of the printed text, its connection to themes within the course, and my personal insights on the medieval period gained from my interactions with this artifact. Piece number three of the Karen Gould Collection was a commentary on Paul's Letter to the Hebrews, chapter two, verses one through seven. It was printed in 1497 on paper material, thus classifying the piece as an incunabulum. Consisting of a folio design, the page was double sided, had dimensions of 322mm x 207mm, two columns of 71 lines and no water marks. On the recto side of the filio, the title, translated Paul's Epistle, was at the top center. The entire text was written in Latin, with Paul's epistle (displayed in two columns) located in a rectangular text...

Minister's Black Veil Thesis

...The theme the author was showing in this story is to teach us that we need to be more acknowledging of the sin in our lives. Motifs are, “a distinctive feature or repeating idea in an artistic or literary composition (Storyboard).” Mr. Hooper constantly remind the people of their secret sin, and he shows them this in a artistic way. Symbols are, “ An object used for or representing something else; frequently an emblem, token, or sign, which represents something deeper and more important. It might be a material object representing something immaterial (Storyboard).” As said previously, the black veil was used as a symbol to symbolize secret sin and/or the darkness of humanity. ...you with creating an original claim about a poem, locating textual evidence to support your argument, and then synthesizing said evidence with thoughtful analysis to prove your claim. In this first-major essay, you are working on close-reading skills and are prohibited from using any outside sources whatsoever. This means you will compose your argument and subtopics based solely off your reading of the text. It is not reasonable to expect a strong argument to leap from your forehead, nuanced, sophisticated, and fully formed the night before class. But if you keep the assignment in mind during our discussions and when reading on your own, you are more far more likely to come up with a strong, provable thesis. In closing, I encourage you to understand writing to be a process that one improves at over time and is continually fine-tuned. The sooner you get to work, the faster you will see results. Assignment: Utilizing one of the poems we have discussed in class, you will come up with an original argument that lends itself to a more sophisticated understanding of the piece by analyzing genre-specific literary elements. You will arrive at this argument through close reading, discussion, and a thorough understanding of the poem. In addition to staking a strong claim, you are expected to provide both evidence and analysis to support your assertions. While mentioning ‘common knowledge’ about a piece is acceptable in order to provide context, such information should inform the...

Waiting to Exhale

...whispers to me when one of “us” appears intelligent: “Yes, these authors made us look like we had some sense! Look how analytical they sounded!” But why on earth do I have to feel like that in this marvelous, post racial society? After reading, I noticed that despite the year tacked on to the assigned readings, the content barely changed. From Dubois (1903) to Wingfield and Feagin (2012), we are still acknowledging the same woes that a society assigns particular groups of people. We are still attempting to come up with dire solutions in hopes that everyone will begin to “get along” with one another. But most of all, because of this…People of color are still waiting to exhale. In this essay, there will be two parts: Firstly, a general analysis of the assigned literature for this week. In this compartment of my paper, I will analyze extracted points from the readings thematically as it directly relates to certain points in the “Critical Race: An Introduction” excerpt. Here, I will also be giving a respectful critique of Dubois’ postulations in the “Souls of Black Folk.” Secondly I will critique Allport’s (1954) contact hypothesis that was discussed in Hewstone and Swart (2011). Introduction of Critical Race Theory (CRT) Before I analyze the literature, I think it would be wise to give a brief definition and explanation of Critical Race Theory in general. Delgado and Stefancic (2006) offered a pretty understandable definition and illustration of CRT, highlighting key people...

...A CRITICAL REVIEW OF AN ANOREXIA NERVOSA RESEARCH Institution: Name: Tutor: Date: TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION AND LITERATURE REVIEW 3 PURPOSE STATEMENT REVIEW 5 RESEARCH METHOD REVIEW 6 RESULTS ANALYSIS 7 DISCUSSION ANALYSIS 8 SUMMARY REVIEW 8 REFERENCE 10 INTRODUCTION AND LITERATURE REVIEW Factoring that AN is fast rising disease that cannot be treated by common medicine, there is a great need for further information on what it entails. According to the research, the project seeks to further understand what fosters the development of Anorexia Nervosa. This disease is a behavioral disease, meaning that it can be treated and stopped and the research is proving that significant steps can be made towards eradication or maybe just simply minimized. It is terribly sad that this is a disease suffered by women and it is proving very hard to deal with due to the exaltation of the human being physical and thus making people with little self esteem grow up knowing that. This research will prove instrumental as it seeks to create an alternative approach to the said disease. The literature review was not very thorough and comprehensive factoring the number books, references made in the entire book. Some may be of the opinion that a lot of literature material was used in the research, but the fact one uses the same types of book and material doesn’t make them to be thorough but rather biased (Halawi, 2005). The researchers and the literature review were thus biased as the books used...
